To rehome a retired racing greyhound in the UK, contact a local homing organisation, discuss your household and resident pets, meet suitable dogs, and complete the organisation’s assessment—often including a home visit. Before bringing a dog home, prepare a quiet retreat and plan gradual introductions to unfamiliar rooms, people, and animals. The steps and adoption inclusions vary, so confirm details with the organisation caring for the dog.

How the rehoming process works

Greyhound Trust recommends starting with a local branch, which knows the dogs in its care and can discuss which might suit your circumstances. Its stated process includes meeting dogs and completing a home visit; branch procedures can vary. Greyhound Trust’s homing information explains how to contact a branch.

  1. Contact the local branch. Describe your household, daily routine, and any practical constraints. Mention children, other dogs, cats, and small pets before discussing a match.
  2. Meet dogs the branch considers suitable. Ask what the organisation knows about each dog’s behaviour and needs. If you already have a dog, volunteers may suggest bringing it along to help assess a match.
  3. Complete the home visit or assessment. The organisation may want to understand where the dog will sleep and how your home and garden are arranged. The National Greyhound Centre, for example, asks applicants for photographs of the home and garden, including fences and side gates, and asks where the dog will have a bed and safe space. This is an example, not a universal requirement; ask your own organisation what it needs.

Compare homing routes by how well they know the individual dogs, how they match dogs to households, how they handle resident pets, what assessment and post-placement support they offer, how accessible they are to you, and exactly what adoption includes. There is no basis for assuming one route is best for every adopter.

What Greyhound Trust says its adoption includes

Greyhound Trust says its greyhounds are neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going home, and that adopters receive a collar, lead, and muzzle. Its homing page also states that adopters receive four weeks of free Petplan insurance. These are the Trust’s stated arrangements, not guarantees for other organisations or branches; confirm current details and insurance terms directly before relying on them or buying equipment. How to choose a dog for your household

Tell the homing organisation about everyone who lives in the home, the hours the dog would be alone, your usual routine, and any resident animals. Ask how the dog has been assessed around the specific types of people and pets in your household. A general possibility that greyhounds can live with cats or small pets is not proof that a particular dog is safe with yours.

Greyhound Trust notes that greyhounds have a chase instinct and says its volunteers can help identify dogs assessed as suitable for homes with cats or small pets. Share those details before matching, and ask what the assessment involved and what support is available if the transition is difficult. Greyhound Trust’s care resources

How to help a retired racer settle in

A home can contain unfamiliar sights and sounds for a dog used to a different environment. Greyhound Trust lists carpets, doorbells, post through a letterbox, vacuum cleaners, and washing machines among things retired racers may not know. Some dogs need more help adjusting than others, so plan a predictable, quiet place to rest and let the dog encounter household activity gradually. Follow the guidance of the organisation that knows the individual dog. Greyhound Trust’s care resources

The National Greyhound Centre describes using home-like rooms and everyday experiences to help dogs transition. The practical lesson for adopters is to make a safe resting area available and avoid overwhelming a new dog with too much activity at once. National Greyhound Centre

Greyhound Trust links to resources on basic commands, cats and small animals, separation anxiety, and crate training. Use such advice as a starting point, not a promise that every dog will settle quickly. Ask the organisation for dog-specific advice, and consult a veterinarian about health questions or a qualified behaviour professional if a problem is complex. Greyhound Trust’s care resources

Introducing a greyhound to a resident cat

Keep the cat’s safety and ability to retreat central to the plan. Greyhound Trust advises preparing a space the greyhound cannot enter, stocking it with the cat’s essentials, and providing elevated escape areas. A scent exchange before the dog arrives can help both animals become familiar with each other’s smell. Greyhound Trust’s guide to cats

  1. Set up separate spaces first. Ensure the cat can reach food, water, litter, and resting places without passing the dog. Provide escape routes and high places.
  2. Exchange scents before a face-to-face meeting. Let each animal become familiar with the other’s scent while they remain apart.
  3. Keep initial meetings calm, controlled, and at a safe distance. The Trust’s guide advises keeping the greyhound on lead and muzzled, with enough distance to prevent lunging and the cat free to retreat. Do not force the animals to approach one another.
  4. Maintain separation when needed and supervise every interaction. The introduction may take days or weeks. Do not leave the animals together unsupervised; if you are unsure that an interaction is safe, keep them apart and consult an experienced registered behaviourist.

The guide recommends positive, reward-based training and warns against shouting, physical punishment, and aversive tools. For a difficult or unsafe introduction, seek help from a qualified professional rather than trying to resolve complex behaviour through general advice alone. Greyhound Trust’s guide to cats

Walks, exercise, and muzzle guidance

Greyhound Trust’s breed profile gives two twenty-minute walks a day as general exercise guidance and describes greyhounds as using energy in short bursts. Treat that as a starting point, not an individual prescription: a dog’s health, fitness, temperament, and adjustment to home life matter. The page is not a veterinary assessment. Greyhound Trust’s greyhound profile

The Trust says greyhounds do not need to be muzzled at all times, but recommends using a muzzle when out and about until you are confident about the dog’s behaviour around other breeds. It also recommends a confined space and muzzle if the dog is to be off lead. Follow the homing organisation’s assessment and any rules that apply where you live. Check the fit of any supplied muzzle and ask the branch before buying a replacement. Greyhound Trust’s greyhound profile

What to ask before bringing your dog home

  • What is known about the dog’s medical and behavioural history, and what follow-up should I arrange with my veterinarian?
  • How has the dog been assessed around children, other dogs, cats, or small pets relevant to my household?
  • What should I know about the dog’s experience being alone, household noises, and settling into a home?
  • What support can the organisation provide after placement if the dog or another pet struggles?
  • Which items and services are included, and what should I confirm about any insurance or other time-limited benefit?
  • What exercise, lead, muzzle, and off-lead guidance applies to this individual dog and where I live?

Greyhound Trust’s process and stated benefits apply to its own network; adoption rules, assessments, and inclusions elsewhere may differ. Ask the organisation directly about current availability and local requirements. For medical questions, consult a veterinarian.
