No—don’t give gummy bears to cats. They are not an appropriate cat treat. The available veterinary sources do not establish a cat-specific toxic dose for ordinary gummy candy, but sugar-free, vitamin, and medicated gummies may contain ingredients that need prompt veterinary review. If your cat has eaten one, check the label and contact a veterinarian when the ingredients or amount are unclear, or if your cat seems unwell.
Why gummy bears aren’t a suitable cat treat
Gummy bears are candy, not food formulated for cats. A veterinarian-reviewed article on gummy bears describes them as primarily sugar and gelatin and says they are not nutritionally appropriate for cats. Offering them provides no established feline benefit and introduces ingredients that may warrant concern.

For ordinary gummy candy, the sources available do not establish a cat-specific poisoning threshold or show that every small accidental exposure causes poisoning. That is not the same as calling gummy bears safe: the product, ingredients, amount eaten, and your cat’s condition all matter. The American Animal Hospital Association includes gummy bears among sugar-based candies pets may get into, but does not provide a cat-specific dose or outcome (AAHA: My pet got into the Halloween candy bucket, now what?).
Which kind of gummy did your cat eat?
Ordinary gummy candy
Check the full ingredient list rather than assuming the candy contains only sugar and gelatin. Chocolate is one ingredient Cornell lists as hazardous to cats, and a gummy product may include ingredients beyond those typical of ordinary candy. If the label raises concern, the amount was substantial or uncertain, or your cat is unwell, call a veterinarian.

Sugar-free gummies and xylitol
Veterinary sources do not agree on how to characterize xylitol risk in cats. Cornell lists xylitol among toxic foods for cats (Cornell Feline Health Center: Common Cat Hazards). The ASPCA says xylitol does not cause serious problems in cats or ferrets (ASPCA: Xylitol: The Sweetener That Is Not So Sweet for Pets). Pet Poison Helpline’s toxicology author describes anecdotal feline sensitivity but says published data on cats are absent (Pet Poison Helpline: Xylitol Is In Everything).
Because the evidence is not consistent, don’t assume a sugar-free gummy is harmless, and don’t apply dog-specific xylitol doses or outcomes to a cat. Contact your veterinarian with the package in hand for advice specific to your cat and the product.

Vitamin or medicated gummies
These may contain active ingredients in addition to sweeteners. There is no universal risk estimate for all vitamin or medicated gummies in the sources cited here, so identify the exact product and ask a veterinarian if your cat ate any.

- Remove access. Put away the remaining candy and packaging. Keep the package or take a clear photo of the complete ingredient list.
- Work out what may be missing. Estimate the number of pieces and when your cat ate them. Note your cat’s approximate weight and current condition.
- Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic when the exposure is concerning or unclear. Do this for sugar-free, vitamin, or medicated gummies; a label with a concerning ingredient; a substantial or uncertain amount; or a cat that seems unwell. Cornell advises immediate veterinary care for suspected toxic ingestion (Cornell Feline Health Center: Common Cat Hazards).
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically tells you to. Cornell cautions against inducing vomiting without professional direction (Cornell Feline Health Center: Common Cat Hazards).
Signs that need emergency veterinary care
Seek emergency veterinary attention if your cat develops signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, or blood in the stool or urine. Cornell lists these among poisoning signs and advises emergency care for cats showing signs (Cornell Feline Health Center: Poisons). Do not wait for symptoms if you already suspect a potentially toxic ingredient was eaten; contact a veterinarian for guidance.
