Help a stressed cat by making home feel safe and predictable: provide a quiet retreat, separate essential resources, offer suitable play and foraging, and let the cat control interactions. But do not assume a new behavior is simply stress. Cats may hide signs of pain or illness, and changes such as urinating outside the litter box warrant veterinary advice.
How can you tell whether a cat is stressed?
There is no reliable home checklist that can diagnose stress. The Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) cautions that “Cats often do not express obvious signs of stress, pain, or sickness that we can easily recognize.” Hiding, changes in routine, or house-soiling may reflect environmental distress, but they can also have medical causes.

Think of the steps below as ways to make the environment easier for your cat to navigate, not as a substitute for veterinary care when behavior changes or a problem persists.
Seven ways to make home easier for your cat
1. Create a safe retreat
Give your cat a quiet place to hide or rest without being disturbed. Many cats prefer a small, enclosed space raised off the ground. Where possible, choose a hideaway with entry and exit routes on at least two sides, so the cat is less likely to feel trapped. In a home with multiple cats, arrange hiding places so cats can get out of one another’s sight.

2. Separate essential resources
Make food, water, litter, scratching surfaces, play areas, and resting places easy to reach without another animal blocking access. Keep these resources apart rather than clustering them together. In multi-cat homes, provide multiple options in different locations; distance and visual barriers can help reduce competition.
3. Offer play and foraging
Interactive toys such as a feather wand or mouse toy can give a cat an outlet for prey-like play. Let your cat catch the toy at least sometimes; play that never ends in a successful catch may be frustrating. Food puzzles and food balls offer foraging opportunities. Choose activities that suit your individual cat, and do not use hands or feet as toys.

Cats use smell to assess their surroundings. Avoid strong or unfamiliar scents where practical, and do not unnecessarily remove a cat’s scent from familiar areas during household changes. FelineVMA lists synthetic feline facial pheromones as a possible aid in stressful or unfamiliar situations, but does not establish a guaranteed result.

6. Reduce competition and manage introductions
Watch for interactions such as staring, blocking, or stalking, which can make shared spaces and resources difficult to use. Provide more separated resources and safe spaces, consider feeding cats apart, and make time for individual play. A new cat or a cat returning from a veterinary visit can disrupt the household; introduce cats gradually and manage their access to one another. If tension continues, ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for guidance.
7. Ask a veterinarian about behavior changes
Contact a veterinarian when a problem occurs, especially for house-soiling or a marked change in normal habits. Urinating outside the litter box can be linked to an underlying medical problem, feline idiopathic cystitis, or environmental distress. It is not proof that a cat is misbehaving or that stress is the sole cause. A veterinarian can assess medical possibilities and, when appropriate, recommend referral to a qualified behavior professional.

What to do if your cat is peeing outside the litter box
- Arrange veterinary advice. House-soiling can have medical as well as environmental causes, so do not try to diagnose it from behavior alone.
- Do not punish your cat. Punishment can add distress and may worsen unwanted behavior.
- Make access easier while you seek help. Check that the cat can reach litter, water, and resting places without being blocked by another pet, and provide quiet places to retreat.
These environmental adjustments can support your cat, but they do not establish why the house-soiling is happening.
