Tiny Tim is Tim Cratchit, the youngest son of Bob Cratchit in Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. The exact title “Tiny Tim’s Story” does not match a standalone Dickens book. The closest match is a section headed “TINY TIM” in Kate Dickinson Sweetser’s 1901 anthology Ten Boys from Dickens, which assembles Dickens’s material into a complete story for young readers. A separate children’s anthology also contains a Tiny Tim section taken from A Christmas Carol, so the two should not be confused.
Who Tiny Tim is
Tim is the youngest child of the Cratchit family, whose father works as a clerk for Ebenezer Scrooge. Tim’s frailty and his family’s devotion to him make him the emotional center of the novella’s Christmas scenes. When the Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge the Cratchits’ dinner, the question of Tim’s future becomes the moral test of the story.
Where his story is told
Dickens’s novella: A Christmas Carol
The original novella is the only source that gives Tim his full narrative context: the Cratchit household, the Christmas dinner, and the Ghost’s warning about the future. The Project Gutenberg text used for this article is an illustrated printing from 1915 with Arthur Rackham’s illustrations, and it reproduces Dickens’s preface, which begins: “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book to raise the Ghost of an Idea which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me.” That preface is signed “C. D.” and dated December 1843.
Sweetser’s anthology: Ten Boys from Dickens (1901)
Sweetser’s book recasts boy characters from Dickens as complete stories. Her preface explains the method: original passages are kept wherever possible, connecting material is added only where it is needed, and surrounding characters are removed when the story can be told without them. The “TINY TIM” section therefore reads as a single narrative, but it is an editorial arrangement rather than a separate Dickens work. Sweetser writes: “Charles Dickens has given us no picture of Tiny Tim, but at the thought of him comes a vision of a delicate figure, less boy than spirit.” That line is hers, not Dickens’s.

A children’s anthology: Dickens’ Stories About Children Every Child Can Read
This Project Gutenberg anthology also includes a section titled “Tiny Tim” and attributes it to A Christmas Carol. It shows that Tim’s story has long been excerpted for younger readers. The sources reviewed for this article do not state how much of Dickens’s wording this section keeps or how much connecting text it adds, so readers who need that detail should check the anthology itself.
Comparing the versions
| Version | Type | Surrounding context | Wording | Audience and edition |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A Christmas Carol (Dickens) | Novella | Complete plot, including Scrooge’s visits from the Ghosts | Dickens’s original text | General readers; Project Gutenberg text of a 1915 illustrated Rackham printing |
| “TINY TIM” in Ten Boys from Dickens (Sweetser, 1901) | Anthology section | Written as a complete story; surrounding characters removed where possible | Original Dickens passages, joined by editorial connecting material | Young readers; the anthology’s preface describes its method |
| “Tiny Tim” in Dickens’ Stories About Children Every Child Can Read | Children’s anthology section | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Not stated in the sources reviewed | Children; attributed to A Christmas Carol |
Reading the period language
The 1915 printing uses the disability language of Dickens’s era when it describes Tim. Modern readers should treat that wording as a feature of the source’s time rather than as current, neutral language. When you quote the novella or an anthology in school work, reproduce the original words and attribute them to Dickens or the editor, and describe Tim’s condition in your own terms.
