Can Chickens Eat Pumpkin? Four Practical Benefits and Important Limits

Pumpkin can provide chickens with seasonal variety and a useful pecking activity, while seed and seed-meal studies offer limited feed findings. Learn what is supported, what is not, and how to avoid replacing complete feed or veterinary care.

Yes—healthy chickens can have pumpkin as an occasional extra. The realistic benefits are modest: a whole, intact pumpkin can provide a novel pecking activity, help a keeper use suitable seasonal surplus, and supply seeds that have been studied as poultry-feed ingredients. Those controlled studies do not prove that tossing pumpkin into a backyard run improves health, laying, or parasite control.

Keep a complete commercial ration as the nutritional foundation. Treat pumpkin as supplemental, distinguish pumpkin flesh from concentrated seed or seed-meal diets, and do not use pumpkin seeds instead of diagnosis and veterinary treatment for worms.

What benefits are actually supported?

Pumpkin is best understood as an occasional enrichment item and a possible use for suitable seasonal surplus. The more technical findings involve pumpkin seeds or pumpkin seed meal mixed into formulated poultry diets, not ordinary servings of pumpkin flesh. Four defensible benefit angles are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Variety and engagement: a pumpkin gives chickens something different to scratch, peck and investigate.
  2. Use of an intact seasonal pumpkin: suitable surplus can be offered rather than discarded, provided it is not spoiled.
  3. A studied feed ingredient: one 2023 laying-hen experiment found improved feed conversion in its pumpkin-seed group.
  4. Potential changes in egg composition: formulated diets containing pumpkin seed meal have been studied for egg-quality and fatty-acid measures.

The first two are practical flock-management benefits, not measured production improvements. The last two come from controlled feeding experiments with specific ingredients and inclusion levels.

1. Pumpkin can add safe-looking variety to a chicken’s day

Why a whole pumpkin is engaging

Chickens are motivated to scratch, search and peck. An occasional pumpkin can create a novel object and food puzzle: birds investigate the skin, open sections and pick at the edible material. That makes pumpkin a practical enrichment opportunity, especially when birds have little variety in a run.

University of Kentucky extension guidance describes complete feed as the simplest way to feed a small flock and warns that extras can upset the balance of a nutritionally complete ration. Its guidance is not a pumpkin-specific serving rule; it says table scraps and scratch grains together should be no more than what the flock can finish in about 20 minutes. Read the full feeding guidance at University of Kentucky’s small-flock feeding resource.

What this benefit does not prove

No reviewed extension source tested pumpkin enrichment itself, and no controlled result establishes that a pumpkin improves welfare, growth, immunity or egg production merely because birds peck at it. Describe the outcome accurately: pumpkin can offer variety, not a guaranteed health effect.

How to keep variety from displacing feed

  • Offer pumpkin after birds have access to their normal complete ration, rather than using it as the main food.
  • Watch whether the flock finishes the extra promptly. If scraps remain, reduce the amount next time.
  • Remove any uneaten material when it begins to deteriorate; the available sources do not provide a universal spoilage protocol for every pumpkin preparation.

2. Pumpkin can use suitable seasonal surplus

A practical household use

If you have an intact, unspoiled seasonal pumpkin that you will not eat, offering some to chickens can turn a potential waste item into a short-lived flock activity. This is a household and enrichment advantage, not evidence that pumpkin supplies a missing nutrient or increases laying.

Choose the condition, not a promised preparation

The available poultry sources do not establish an authoritative safety list covering every pumpkin variety, cooked or raw form, age of bird and flock condition. They also do not establish that moldy or deteriorated pumpkin is safe. Do not present questionable produce as a treatment or make broad safety guarantees. When the condition of a pumpkin is uncertain, the conservative choice is not to feed it.

Keep the distinction clear in your flock records: using a sound seasonal pumpkin is different from formulating a diet around pumpkin products. A backyard treat has no known equivalent to the inclusion levels used in feed trials.

How much household surplus?

There is no validated, universal pumpkin portion for backyard chickens in the sources reviewed. Use the extension benchmark for extras—only what the flock can consume in roughly 20 minutes when table scraps and scratch grains are considered together—as a behavioral limit, not a pumpkin dosage. Individual appetite, flock size, age and the amount of other treats all change the practical quantity.

3. Pumpkin seeds have been studied as a poultry-feed ingredient

The 2023 laying-hen experiment

A 2023 study tested pumpkin seeds among feed additives in laying hens infected naturally and artificially with Ascaridia galli. The pumpkin-seed treatment used 10 g of pumpkin seeds per bird per day. In that experiment, the pumpkin group showed improved feed conversion compared with controls. The authors reported no other effect on the measured performance, parasitological or microbiological parameters, concluding: “with the exception of improved feed conversion in the pumpkin group, no positive nor negative effects of the additives on performance, parasitological and microbiological parameters … were observed.” Read the study in Veterinary Research Communications.

Feed conversion is a ratio describing how efficiently feed is converted into output under the study’s conditions. It is not the same as proving that a few seeds offered as a snack will make a backyard flock more efficient. The birds, ration, seed preparation, infection status and trial design all matter.

Why you should not copy the trial amount

The 10-g figure is an experimental treatment level, not a recommendation for home flocks. It was part of a defined diet and study protocol. Feeding that amount as an unbalanced extra could have a different effect depending on the rest of the ration and the bird. No source here supplies a general pumpkin-seed dose for all chickens.

How this differs from feeding pumpkin flesh

Seeds are a concentrated ingredient examined in feed studies; pumpkin flesh offered as a seasonal treat is not equivalent. Do not transfer a result about seed inclusion to the flesh, and do not imply that ordinary pumpkin pieces reproduce the measured feed-conversion result.

4. Pumpkin seed meal may change some egg-composition measures

What the layer-diet studies examined

Researchers have also investigated pumpkin seed meal in formulated rations for laying hens. A 2022 study used 9% pumpkin seed meal inclusion and measured layer performance and egg-quality characteristics. The inclusion level belonged to that formulated diet; it is not a snack portion or a backyard feeding target. See the full paper in Animal Bioscience.

A review of pumpkin waste as livestock feed describes earlier findings involving egg fatty-acid composition and other quality measures, while emphasizing that pumpkin-feed research remains scarce. The review is available at Pumpkin Waste as Livestock Feed.

Interpret the result narrowly

A change in an egg-composition measurement under a formulated ration does not mean that eating a few pumpkin seeds will reliably alter eggs from a backyard flock. The outcome depends on the pumpkin species, processing, inclusion rate, the rest of the diet and the production conditions. No reviewed source establishes a predictable change in flavor, shell strength, yolk color or human nutrition from casual pumpkin feeding.

Pumpkin flesh, seeds and seed meal are not interchangeable

Form or claim What the evidence supports What it does not establish
Pumpkin flesh as an occasional extra Novel pecking activity and a practical way to use suitable seasonal surplus. A specific nutrient, health improvement or production increase.
Pumpkin seeds in a controlled trial The 2023 laying-hen study reported improved feed conversion at 10 g per bird per day in its pumpkin group. That 10 g is a universal treat amount or that casual seeds produce the same result.
Pumpkin seed meal in a formulated ration A 2022 layer study examined a diet containing 9% pumpkin seed meal and measured performance and egg characteristics. That 9% is suitable for a home flock or that pumpkin flesh has the same effect.
Pumpkin seeds as a dewormer One 2019 study found moderate effects on some worm counts and a marginal effect on another; later laying-hen work found no treatment effect on parasitological measures. A reliable treatment, prevention plan or replacement for veterinary care.

Do pumpkin seeds deworm chickens?

No dependable deworming recommendation can be made from these findings. In a 2019 experiment, Acorda, Mangubat and Divina divided 90 native chickens into three treatment groups; the pumpkin-seed group received 2 g of ground pumpkin seed per bird per day. The authors wrote that pumpkin seed had “the potential to be used as an alternative anthelmintic for chickens.” That is a conclusion from one study, not proof of a reliable backyard treatment. The paper is published in the Turkish Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

The later 2023 laying-hen study did not find a treatment effect on its parasitological measures. Taken together, the results are mixed: one experiment reported partial worm-count effects, while another found no parasitological treatment effect. Neither supports replacing fecal testing, a veterinarian’s diagnosis or an indicated medication with pumpkin seeds.

What to do if worms are suspected

  1. Look for a pattern of illness or production change rather than assuming pumpkin will diagnose the cause.
  2. Ask a veterinarian about appropriate testing, including whether fecal examination is warranted.
  3. Use only a treatment and withdrawal instructions that are appropriate for the birds and eggs in your jurisdiction.
  4. Continue normal nutrition and flock hygiene while the cause is investigated; do not increase pumpkin in the hope of treating parasites.

How to offer pumpkin without unbalancing the ration

Use the complete feed as the baseline

Complete poultry feed is formulated to supply the nutrient balance chickens need. Supplements, scraps and scratch grains can dilute that balance when birds fill up on extras. Pumpkin should therefore remain occasional and supplemental, regardless of whether you offer flesh, a few seeds or a seasonal whole pumpkin.

Use observation rather than a fictional universal dose

Because no pumpkin-specific backyard serving amount is established, start with a small amount appropriate to the flock’s size and observe consumption. The practical ceiling supplied by extension guidance is that combined table scraps and scratch grains should be no more than the birds can finish in about 20 minutes. This is not a prescription for grams of pumpkin, and it does not override the need to consider other treats.

Separate treat decisions from feed-formulation decisions

If you are designing a ration, a poultry nutritionist should evaluate the entire formula, ingredient processing and inclusion level. Do not convert the 2-g seed treatment, 10-g seed treatment or 9% seed-meal inclusion from separate studies into a home recipe. They answer different experimental questions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Promising better laying: controlled findings about feed conversion or egg composition do not prove more eggs from a pumpkin treat.
  • Calling seeds a dewormer: the evidence is inconsistent and not strong enough to replace diagnosis or treatment.
  • Using study amounts as portions: experimental inclusion levels are not general backyard recommendations.
  • Confusing flesh with seed meal: these forms differ in composition and in how they were studied.
  • Letting treats replace complete feed: extras can upset a balanced diet, particularly when birds receive several kinds of scraps.
  • Assuming every pumpkin preparation is covered: the available sources do not provide a universal safety guide for all forms, ages and flock conditions.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Check the condition: offer only a pumpkin you regard as intact and unspoiled; do not treat deteriorated produce as safe by default.
  2. Identify the purpose: use it for variety or sensible surplus management, not as a promised medicine or production enhancer.
  3. Protect the ration: keep complete feed available and count pumpkin among the flock’s extras.
  4. Watch the clock: use the approximately 20-minute extension benchmark for combined scraps and scratch grains as a guide to whether the flock is receiving too many extras.
  5. Keep claims proportional: seed studies can inform questions about formulated poultry diets, but they do not establish a casual-treat dose.
  6. Escalate health concerns: suspected worms or unexplained illness require veterinary assessment, not a larger serving of pumpkin seeds.
