Can Chickens Live in the House? Health Risks and a Safer Pet Setup

Chickens may be friendly pets, but CDC guidance says to keep backyard poultry and their equipment outside the home. Here is how to provide safe housing, handle birds hygienically and recognize illness.

Chickens should not be kept as indoor house pets. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises keeping backyard poultry and their care equipment outside, especially away from rooms where food or drinks are prepared, served, or stored. Chickens can carry Salmonella and other germs while appearing healthy, and an indoor room cannot provide the coop’s ventilation, bedding, predator protection, roosts, nesting areas, and disease controls. If you want chickens as companion animals, give them a properly maintained outdoor coop and run, handle them outdoors, and use careful hand hygiene.

Why a chicken’s clean appearance is not a safety test

Chickens can be affectionate, responsive and enjoyable to watch, which makes the idea of a house chicken appealing. But feathers that look clean do not show whether a bird is carrying germs. The CDC states that “Backyard poultry, like chickens and ducks, can carry Salmonella germs even if they look healthy and clean.” Salmonella and other organisms can be present on the bird, its droppings, bedding, feeders, waterers, cage surfaces and the ground where it roams.

People can be exposed when they touch a bird or a contaminated surface and then touch their mouth, face or food. Eggs and equipment can also transfer contamination. Because a chicken moving through a kitchen, dining area or living room can leave contamination in places people regularly touch, visual cleanliness is not a reliable basis for allowing indoor access.

Children under five, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill from germs carried by backyard poultry. A household with anyone in one of these groups should be especially strict about keeping birds and their equipment outdoors.

What the CDC recommends about poultry in the home

The CDC’s Backyard Flock Owners and Bird Flu guidance, dated March 7, 2025, says: “Don’t let backyard poultry inside the house, especially in areas where food or drinks are prepared, served, or stored.” The same guidance recommends building a coop outside the home and staying outdoors when cleaning equipment and materials used to raise or care for poultry.

This is broader than a kitchen rule. The recommendation covers the house as a living space, not only countertops. The sources reviewed do not establish a safe exception for a short indoor visit, a supervised free-roam period or a bird that is treated as a “clean” pet. Keeping a bird indoors also makes it harder to separate poultry footwear, bedding, feed and cleaning tools from household items.

Bird flu is an additional flock concern

Backyard flocks can be exposed to avian influenza through contact with wild birds. Infected poultry can become very sick and usually die, according to the CDC. Indoor housing is not a substitute for biosecurity: wild-bird contact, contaminated shoes, rodents, insects and equipment can all matter at the flock level.

Do not interpret ordinary contact with a healthy-looking chicken as proof that a person has bird flu. The CDC’s warning concerns poultry illness and exposure to infected birds. If a bird becomes ill or dies unexpectedly, keep people and other animals away from it and contact a veterinarian or a local extension agent experienced with poultry.

Why a bedroom, bathroom or laundry room is not a coop

Chickens have housing needs that a spare room rarely meets safely. A suitable structure must provide airflow without drafts, dry and maintainable bedding, secure roosting and nesting areas, protection from predators and weather, and barriers against rodents, insects and wild birds. It must also allow feeders, waterers and surfaces to be cleaned without spreading contaminated material through the home.

University of Delaware Cooperative Extension’s May 2025 housing guidance gives these planning recommendations:

Housing element Extension recommendation or feature How to use it
Enclosed coop floor area 2–3 square feet per chicken Calculate usable interior floor space, not storage space or the footprint of bulky equipment.
Outdoor run 8–10 square feet per chicken Provide additional movement space outside the enclosed sleeping and nesting area.
Nest boxes One box for every 3–4 hens Place boxes in a protected, accessible part of the coop.
Ventilation Ventilation without drafts Control moisture and stale air while avoiding direct cold airflow on roosting birds.
Construction Predator-resistant and weather-protective Secure openings and use materials that can be maintained over time.
Bedding Soft bedding such as straw or pine shavings Remove soiled bedding weekly to help prevent ammonia buildup.

Those square-foot figures are University of Delaware Cooperative Extension recommendations, not a universal legal or veterinary standard. Breed, flock size, climate, age, arrangement and local requirements can change the appropriate design. Treat the figures as a starting point and ask a poultry veterinarian or extension service to review an unusual setup.

How to create a safe alternative for pet chickens

  1. Check local rules first. Contact your city, county or other relevant local authority about flock limits, setbacks, permits, nuisance rules and property restrictions. Rental agreements and neighborhood covenants may impose additional conditions; the CDC guidance does not determine local legality.
  2. Choose an outdoor location. Select a site that can be fenced, drained and reached for daily care without walking through the house in poultry shoes. Plan protection from weather, predators, rodents, insects and contact with wild birds.
  3. Size the coop and run. Multiply the University of Delaware recommendations by the number of chickens, then check whether the resulting space is genuinely usable. Leave room to reach every area for inspection and cleaning.
  4. Build for airflow and dryness. Provide ventilation without drafts, a roof and walls that shelter birds from weather, secure doors and predator-resistant openings. Moist bedding and stagnant air create maintenance problems and ammonia buildup.
  5. Add roosts, nest boxes, feeders and waterers. Keep these items positioned so birds can use them comfortably and you can remove, wash or replace them outdoors. Do not bring poultry equipment into the kitchen, bathtub or utility sink used for household items.
  6. Install maintainable bedding. Use soft bedding such as straw or pine shavings. Remove soiled material at least weekly, or more often if moisture or odor develops, and dispose of it in a way that does not contaminate food-preparation areas.
  7. Set up a cleaning station outside. Keep poultry-only footwear, gloves, tools and containers at the coop. CDC guidance says to clean poultry equipment outdoors; do not rinse manure or bedding in indoor sinks or tubs.
  8. Arrange veterinary support. Identify a poultry veterinarian or knowledgeable local extension agent before a problem occurs. Routine evaluation and prompt advice are particularly important for small flocks in which one sick bird can affect the others.

How to interact with chickens without bringing contamination indoors

Enjoying chickens as pets does not require sharing indoor rooms. Sit with them in the run, offer routine care outdoors and observe their behavior there. After touching birds, eggs, bedding, feed containers or any part of the coop, wash your hands with soap and running water. Supervise young children so they wash properly rather than touching their faces first.

  • Keep dedicated poultry shoes outside and change them before entering the home.
  • Do not eat or drink where poultry live or roam.
  • Do not kiss, snuggle or press a chicken against your face, then touch your mouth or food.
  • Keep children from putting fingers, toys or other objects in their mouths while handling birds.
  • Store feed, bedding and cleaning supplies away from household food and food-contact surfaces.
  • Wash hands after collecting eggs and before preparing or eating food.

These measures reduce transfer; they do not make indoor housing appropriate. A bird that is calm, hand-tame or raised from a chick still has the same poultry-related contamination pathways.

If a chicken gets inside accidentally

Move the bird back outdoors and keep people away from any area where it walked, defecated or contacted food or dishes. Wash hands with soap and running water after handling the bird. Clean and sanitize affected household surfaces according to the product label, launder or discard visibly contaminated materials as appropriate, and wash any food or utensils that may have been exposed. If contamination reached a food-preparation surface, complete cleaning before using it again.

Do not turn an accidental entry into a routine indoor visit. The CDC guidance does not identify a harmless duration or a safe room for poultry inside the house.

Recognizing illness in a backyard chicken

Contact a veterinarian or local extension agent if a bird shows signs such as eating or drinking less, ruffled feathers, diarrhea, discharge, breathing difficulty, reduced egg production, misshapen eggs or unexpected death. These signs can have several causes, but the CDC identifies them as possible signs of serious poultry illness, including avian influenza.

Until you receive advice, limit contact between the sick bird and people, pets and the rest of the flock. Avoid carrying a sick bird through the house; use an outdoor isolation and examination plan recommended by your veterinarian. Do not attempt to diagnose bird flu from appearance alone.

Questions to ask before choosing chickens as pets

Are chickens clean enough to live indoors?

No. A clean-looking chicken can carry Salmonella, and germs can be present in its environment even when no illness is visible. Cleanliness of feathers is not a substitute for outdoor housing and hand hygiene.

Can I keep one chicken in a bathroom or spare room temporarily?

The CDC’s published advice is not to let backyard poultry inside the house, and the available guidance does not establish a safe indoor exception for brief or supervised stays. Arrange an appropriate outdoor enclosure instead.

Can I bring a chicken inside for medical care?

Ask a poultry veterinarian how to examine or isolate the bird without contaminating the home. If an emergency requires temporary indoor handling, follow the veterinarian’s directions for containment and cleaning rather than assuming that a short visit is risk-free.

What if my family wants a cuddly pet?

Choose outdoor interaction: hand-tame birds can still be handled in the run. Keep face contact, food and drink, poultry shoes and poultry equipment separate from the household, and apply stricter supervision when young children, older adults or immunocompromised people are present.

Do these precautions replace veterinary care?

No. CDC recommends working with a veterinarian or extension agent experienced with poultry for routine evaluation and illness advice. A professional can adjust housing, isolation and hygiene practices to your flock and local conditions.

The practical decision

Chickens can be rewarding companion animals, but the safer relationship is outdoor companionship rather than indoor cohabitation. Build and maintain a secure coop and run, keep care equipment outside, wash hands after every contact with birds or their environment, and obtain local veterinary and ordinance advice before bringing a flock home.
