Dates are not considered toxic to dogs, yet they are high in natural sugar and fiber, so they should be an occasional treat rather than a regular part of the diet.
The main risks are the hard date pit, oversized portions, and dates prepared with unsafe ingredients such as chocolate or xylitol. If your dog swallows a pit or eats dates with raisins or other toxic ingredients, contact a veterinarian promptly.

Are dates safe for dogs?
Plain, pit-free dates are generally safe for dogs in moderation. They do not provide anything a dog needs that is missing from a complete and balanced dog food, so there is no nutritional reason to add them to your dog’s diet. If you offer dates, treat them like any other snack and keep the amount small.
Dates contain concentrated natural sugar and a substantial amount of fiber. Eating too much may cause gas, loose stool, diarrhea, or vomiting. The extra calories can also contribute to weight gain if dates become a regular treat.

Never give your dog a date pit
Date pits are not considered poisonous, but they are dangerous to swallow. A pit can:
- Choke a dog
- Become lodged in the esophagus
- Fracture or damage a tooth
- Cause a stomach or intestinal blockage
The danger is especially significant for puppies, small dogs, and dogs that gulp food. Buy dates labeled as pitted, or cut each date open and remove the entire pit yourself. Do not rely on appearance alone; check the packaging rather than assuming every commercially prepared date is pit-free.
How much date can a dog eat?
There is no single portion that suits every dog. Size, age, weight, activity level, health conditions, and the rest of the day’s food all matter. A sensible first serving is one small piece—not a whole date.
- Remove the pit and check that no hard fragments remain.
- Cut the date into small pieces.
- Offer one piece as a trial.
- Watch for gas, vomiting, loose stool, diarrhea, or other digestive upset.
- If your dog tolerates it, give dates only occasionally and keep all treats within the daily calorie allowance.
Veterinary nutrition guidance generally recommends that treats, snacks, and human foods together account for no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calories. The American Kennel Club gives a broad guideline of roughly one-half to two dates once or twice per week depending on the dog’s size, but that is not a universal prescription. For a small dog, a few tiny pieces may be more appropriate than a whole date.
Fresh dates versus dried dates
Plain fresh and dried dates can both be suitable when they are pit-free. Dried dates contain less water, so their sugar and calories are more concentrated in each bite. Use a smaller portion of dried date than you would of fresh fruit.
Do not give your dog dates coated, stuffed, or mixed with ingredients that may be harmful. Avoid products containing:
| Ingredient | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Chocolate | Can be toxic to dogs |
| Xylitol | A dangerous sweetener that can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar and other serious effects |
| Raisins or grapes | Can cause potentially life-threatening kidney damage |
| Alcohol | Toxic to dogs |
| Onions or garlic | Can harm dogs, particularly in larger amounts or concentrated forms |
| Macadamia nuts | Can be toxic to dogs |
| Syrup, added sugar, or heavy seasoning | Adds unnecessary calories and may introduce other unsafe ingredients |
Dates themselves are not raisins. Raisins are dried grapes, and a dog that eats raisins or grapes needs prompt veterinary advice rather than home monitoring.
Can dates upset a dog’s stomach?
Yes. A dog may develop gas, diarrhea, vomiting, or loose stool after eating too many dates. Some dogs may react to even a small amount if they have a sensitive digestive system or are not used to high-fiber foods.
Remove dates from the diet and contact your veterinarian if symptoms are severe, persistent, or accompanied by weakness, pain, or a refusal to eat. Dogs with diabetes, obesity, chronic digestive disease, food sensitivities, pancreatitis, or a veterinary-prescribed diet should not be given dates unless their veterinarian approves them.

Call your veterinarian promptly and explain how many pits your dog may have swallowed, when it happened, and your dog’s size. A dog may appear normal at first even when a swallowed object later causes an obstruction.
Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically instructs you to. Trying to make a dog vomit at home can create additional risks, particularly if the object becomes lodged or causes injury on the way back up.
Get urgent veterinary help if you notice:
- Choking or difficulty breathing
- Gagging, repeated swallowing, or excessive drooling
- Repeated vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy or weakness
- Abdominal pain, swelling, or tenderness
- Diarrhea, especially bloody diarrhea
- Straining to defecate or being unable to pass stool
These signs can indicate an esophageal or gastrointestinal blockage and should not be watched at home.

If your veterinarian is comfortable with your dog eating dates, use a plain, pitted date and cut it into very small pieces. You can offer one piece by hand or mix a small piece into a meal, but do not use dates as a substitute for balanced dog food. Keep the package away from your dog so they cannot eat several dates, pits, or a date-based dessert while unsupervised.
FAQ
Can dogs eat dried dates?
Yes, plain dried dates can be given occasionally if they are completely pit-free. Because drying concentrates sugar and calories, offer less than you would of fresh date and keep the piece small.
Are date pits poisonous to dogs?
Date pits are not generally considered poisonous, but they can choke a dog, damage a tooth, or cause an intestinal blockage. Always remove the entire pit before giving a date.
What should I do if my dog ate dates with raisins?
Contact a veterinarian or an animal poison service immediately. Raisins are dried grapes and can cause potentially life-threatening kidney damage in dogs. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan dogs with diabetes eat dates?
Do not give dates to a dog with diabetes unless the dog’s veterinarian says they are appropriate. Dates are high in natural sugar, and treats may need to be restricted or carefully selected.
The Bottom Line
A small piece of plain, pit-free date is usually safe for a healthy dog as an occasional treat. Remove the pit, start with a tiny portion, and count it toward the dog’s total treat calories. Never offer dates mixed with raisins, chocolate, xylitol, or other unsafe ingredients. If your dog swallowed a pit or ate dates with toxic ingredients, contact a veterinarian promptly.
