What happened at the Savannah River Site?
The Savannah River Site (SRS), near Aiken, South Carolina, is a nuclear facility that includes tanks holding liquid radioactive waste. On July 3, 2025, workers found a wasp nest near the tanks. Accounts of a U.S. Department of Energy occurrence report said the contamination measured in the nest was ten times a federal regulatory contamination value. Workers sprayed and removed the nest, then disposed of it as radioactive waste; no wasps were found on that nest. AP reported the discovery and cleanup, and The Guardian summarized the DOE report.
The Washington Post later reported that at least three additional contaminated nests were found within the site, which it described as covering 310 square miles. That is a site-wide figure, not an estimate of how far contamination spread from any nest. The Washington Post’s August 2025 coverage also described local concerns about the discovery.
What does “ten times the limit” mean?
It refers to contamination reported in the nest, not a dose received by a person. The available news accounts do not state the isotope, measured activity, units, sampling method, or a calculation of human exposure. Without those details, the “ten times” figure cannot tell a reader how much radiation a person might receive from being near the nest, or whether any particular person was exposed.

There is also a separate description in an August 2025 Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board summary: site officials characterized contamination as “much lower than natural background radiation” and not a health concern. The available material does not give the measurement units or explain how that statement relates to the July report’s comparison with a federal contamination value. They may describe different measures or contexts, and should not be treated as interchangeable. The board’s August 2025 summary records the site-side characterization.
Does the find mean a waste tank leaked?
No leak was confirmed in the accounts available here. The DOE report, as quoted or summarized by AP and The Guardian, attributed the first nest to “onsite legacy radioactive contamination” and said it was “not related to a loss of contamination control.” It also said there was no contamination in the ground and surrounding area and no further action was required. These are officials’ reported findings; the public-facing record cited in those news accounts does not provide the underlying measurements.

The pathway into the nest remains unsettled. Tom Clements, executive director of Savannah River Site Watch, questioned how the wasps were exposed and whether that route still existed. The Washington Post reported that residents feared an undetected leak. Those concerns are questions about the explanation and monitoring, not evidence that a leak occurred. Kathryn Higley, a nuclear science professor at Oregon State University and president of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, told the Post: “A small localized hot spot doesn’t present a larger threat to the environment.” Her comment refers to a localized finding; it does not identify how the nest became contaminated.
What later site officials said about how nests could become contaminated
Minutes from a January 27, 2026 Savannah River Site Citizens Advisory Board meeting offer a possible route: officials said insects can reach residual low-level contamination near processing areas, including mud or puddles around waste tanks, and use contaminated material in nests. The minutes say officials described contamination in the wasps as very low, their range as a few hundred feet, and the situation as posing no risk to workers or the environment. What this means for people and pets
The reported nests were found inside the Savannah River Site, not in a public neighborhood. The incident accounts say workers handled and disposed of the contaminated nest as radioactive waste and that the surrounding ground was not contaminated. They do not report a human or pet exposure, or establish a public need to buy radiation-monitoring equipment or special cleanup supplies.
For pet owners, the practical distinction is between this controlled facility event and an ordinary wasp nest encountered at home. Nothing in the cited reports suggests that a typical nest outside SRS is radioactive. If a nest is on your property, use ordinary local pest-control guidance rather than treating it as a radiological incident. Do not approach or handle a nest inside a restricted nuclear facility; facility staff are responsible for site hazards and cleanup.
