Fresh tuna is best avoided as a planned dog treat. A tiny accidental taste is unlikely to cause mercury poisoning, but larger or repeated servings are more concerning. Cooking does not remove mercury, and raw fish adds bacterial and parasite risks. No dog-safe tuna portion or feeding schedule is established by the sources cited here.
Why fresh tuna is a poor choice for dogs
The American Kennel Club (AKC) says tuna is not inherently toxic to dogs in the way some foods are, but warns that mercury can build up with too much consumption. It also notes that fresh tuna can contain more mercury than fish such as salmon and tilapia. The practical distinction is between a tiny accidental taste and larger or repeated exposure: the former is unlikely to cause mercury poisoning, while the latter warrants caution.

Mercury levels vary by tuna species. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classify tuna for human consumption: canned light tuna is a “Best Choice,” albacore/white and yellowfin are “Good Choices,” and bigeye is a “Choice to Avoid.” Those categories are for people, not dogs, and do not establish canine-safe servings. The agencies explain that larger or longer-lived tuna types tend to have more mercury. See FDA/EPA advice on fish choices.
For context only, the FDA’s commercial-fish dataset reports an average of 0.689 parts per million (ppm) mercury in fresh/frozen bigeye tuna, based on 21 samples collected from 1993–2005. That measurement is not a safe-or-unsafe threshold for dogs. See the FDA mercury-level dataset.

Does cooking make tuna safer?
Cooking can address some food-preparation hazards, but it does not remove mercury. The FDA explains: “Mercury is found throughout the tissue in fish, so cleaning or cooking will not reduce the amount of mercury.” Read the FDA’s mercury guidance.
Raw tuna should not be served to dogs. Raw fish may carry harmful bacteria and parasites. If you offer fish, AKC guidance is to cook it fully, serve it plain without added oil or seasonings, and remove all bones. AKC fish-feeding guidance also discusses preparation and fish choices.

How much tuna can a dog eat?
No dog-specific safe portion or frequency for fresh tuna is established in the sources cited here. Human fish-consumption guidance cannot be converted into a dose for a dog, and the available sources do not provide a canine mercury threshold by species, amount, dog size, or exposure history. Do not use a human serving recommendation or a general fish-feeding limit as a tuna allowance.
Fish should remain an occasional treat rather than displacing a complete and balanced diet. AKC’s general human-food guidance says to limit fish to no more than twice weekly, but that broad advice is not a tuna-specific safe frequency or a substitute for a veterinarian’s portion advice. Read AKC’s general guide to human foods for dogs.

What fish can you offer instead?
AKC favors shorter-lived fish over tuna and swordfish in the context of heavy-metal accumulation. Options it lists include salmon, ocean or lake whitefish, herring, walleye, flounder, and Arctic char. Salmon and sardines are also mentioned in its general human-food guidance, provided they are prepared safely.
- Choose fish that is fully cooked, plain, and completely deboned.
- Avoid raw or smoked fish, added salt, oil, and seasonings.
- Keep fish occasional unless it is part of a diet professionally balanced for your dog.
- Ask your veterinarian about an appropriate portion for your dog, especially if fish will be fed regularly.
What if your dog ate fresh tuna?
If it was just a tiny taste
AKC says a very small accidental taste is unlikely to cause mercury poisoning. Monitor your dog, but do not treat that reassurance as applying to larger amounts, repeated exposure, or every individual dog.

Seek prompt veterinary advice for concerning signs. AKC lists possible mercury-poisoning signs including hair loss, anxiety or nervousness, vision loss, kidney problems, reduced coordination or sensation in the paws, tremors, vomiting blood, and watery or bloody diarrhea. These signs require a veterinarian’s assessment; they are not a way to diagnose mercury exposure at home. Read AKC’s tuna-specific guidance.
