In a randomized study of dogs undergoing large lower-jaw tooth extractions, sockets filled with a regenerative bone adhesive (RBA) retained more CT-measured ridge height than sockets left to heal with a blood clot alone. At follow-up extending to 12 months, the treated sites had an almost 2 mm advantage in buccal ridge height. The result is promising, but it applies to the canine extraction sites studied—not automatically to every dog, tooth, or species.
What does preserving the alveolar ridge mean?
The alveolar ridge is the part of the jawbone that supports the teeth. After a tooth is removed, the socket heals and the surrounding bone can change in shape and size. Preserving the ridge means limiting that loss of bone dimensions during healing.

The JAAHA study measured ridge dimensions on CT scans. Its reported finding concerns buccal ridge height—the height on the cheek-facing side of the jaw—not a guarantee that the entire socket or jaw remains unchanged.

What did the JAAHA study compare?
Snyder and colleagues published the study in the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association on July 1, 2026. It was a controlled, randomized multicenter clinical study involving 47 dogs and 59 large mandibular tooth extraction sites across 10 practices. Veterinary dental specialists treated the sites. CT follow-ups took place at 6–12 weeks and again at 6–12 months. The study abstract reports statistically significant preservation advantages for RBA-treated sites at both follow-up periods (P < .001). The abstract-level findings do not provide a separate population statistic or establish results for other graft materials.
How much ridge height was preserved?
At long-term follow-up, which extended to 12 months, the RBA-treated sites had an almost 2 mm advantage in buccal ridge height compared with blood-clot-only healing. The American Animal Hospital Association’s September 1, 2026 summary likewise describes nearly 2 mm more buccal ridge height at long-term follow-up, with the difference evident for at least a year. This is a measured difference between study groups, not a prediction of the exact amount of bone an individual dog will retain. The cited abstract and summary do not establish that preserving ridge height necessarily improves comfort, chewing function, or the success of a later implant.

The findings support the possibility that filling certain canine extraction sockets with RBA can reduce loss of ridge dimensions compared with allowing a blood clot to fill the socket. They do not show that every extraction socket should be grafted or that the procedure is suitable for every dog. The evidence described here is specifically about large lower-jaw extractions in dogs treated by veterinary dental specialists.

- Ask your veterinarian whether the study applies: the extraction site and your dog’s situation may differ from the study’s large mandibular sites.
- Discuss the reason for considering the material: the reported outcome was CT-measured ridge height, not a demonstrated improvement in pain, function, or future implant outcomes.
- Ask about the procedure and follow-up: the study assessed healing by CT at short- and long-term intervals, but its abstract and summary do not provide enough detail to prescribe a monitoring plan for an individual patient.
What the study does not establish
- Whether the same result applies to cats or other species.
- Whether RBA should be used for all dogs, teeth, or extraction types.
- Whether the material improves comfort, chewing, or later implant success.
- How it compares with other graft materials or approaches.
- A commercial product identity, regulatory or labeling status, or a current source for purchase.
The AAHA summary points readers to the full paper for methodology, clinical relevance, and limitations. The abstract and summary alone do not provide those details, so they should not be used to make claims beyond the reported comparison and measurements.
