Yes—trained dogs can distinguish odor samples collected during acute human stress from baseline samples in controlled experiments. The evidence points to changes in the odor profile of breath and sweat, not a proven single “stress scent.” It does not show that every pet dog can reliably recognize stress in daily life, or that dogs can diagnose a condition such as PTSD.
What the experiments show
Trained dogs distinguished acute-stress samples
In a 2022 PLOS ONE study, researchers collected combined breath-and-sweat samples from 36 people before and after a mental-arithmetic task intended to cause stress. Four trained dogs were tested in a double-blind procedure: each had to pick the stress sample from that person’s baseline sample and a blank. Across 720 trials, the dogs’ combined accuracy was 93.75%, well above the one-in-three chance rate in that three-choice setup. Read the study.

This result shows that the selected, trained dogs could discriminate between samples in that experiment. It is not a measure of how often an untrained pet dog will notice or interpret an owner’s stress at home.
Stress odor can influence behavior, too
A 2024 Scientific Reports study tested 18 dogs with breath-and-sweat odor samples from three unfamiliar volunteers. In a cognitive-bias task, dogs exposed to stress odor were less likely than dogs in the no-odor condition to approach a bowl at one ambiguous location. The authors interpreted this as possible risk-reduction behavior. The experiment examined dogs’ choices in a task; it did not test whether dogs can reliably alert an owner that the owner is stressed. A small proof of concept explored trauma-related odor
A separate 2024 proof-of-concept study used breath samples from 26 people with trauma histories across 40 sessions; 54% of participants had PTSD. Two scent-detection dogs achieved approximately 90% accuracy in a within-person discrimination task. In a separate detection task, accuracy was 74% for one dog and 81% for the other. These figures come from different tasks and should not be compared directly with the 2022 result. The study suggests trained dogs may detect some stress-associated odor patterns, but it does not establish a PTSD-specific odor signature or diagnostic ability. The authors also did not directly measure the proposed endocrine markers. Read the study.
What might dogs be smelling?
The leading explanation is that acute stress changes volatile organic compounds (VOCs)—airborne chemicals that contribute to odor—in breath and/or sweat. Researchers have not identified a definitive molecule, established how long a stress-related odor change remains detectable, or shown that dogs are detecting one particular hormone. In particular, the findings do not establish that dogs smell cortisol directly. The 2022 study’s discussion describes several possible physiological pathways and calls for research into the compounds and detection window.

Why the findings do not mean every dog can tell
- Training matters: the high discrimination result came from dogs selected and trained for the test, not a representative sample of household pets.
- Experimental samples differ from daily life: researchers presented collected odors under controlled conditions. Everyday situations combine many changing smells and behaviors, and the studies do not establish how reliably a pet distinguishes stress in that setting.
- Detection is not diagnosis: noticing an odor difference, changing behavior around an odor, and identifying a mental-health condition are separate claims. The studies support limited experimental findings, not a diagnostic role.
How to interpret a pet dog’s behavior
A dog’s unusual attention, proximity, or apparent change in behavior may coincide with a person’s stress, but these experiments do not show that any particular behavior proves the person is stressed—or that the dog is responding to stress odor rather than another cue. Treat your dog’s behavior as an observation, not a reliable stress reading or medical assessment.

The studies use different participants, odor samples, tasks, and outcomes. Their accuracy numbers are not a shared leaderboard: one measures discrimination of paired samples, another measures behavior after odor exposure, and the trauma-related study includes both discrimination and detection tasks.
