Canopy Cat Rescue helps reunite cats with their families after they become stranded in trees. Why Canopy Cat Rescue began
Tom and Shaun say they created Canopy Cat Rescue in 2009 after seeing how difficult it was for people to find help when a cat was stranded high in a tree. The organization describes their professional experience as central to the work: Tom is a certified arborist with a degree in Forest Ecology, and Shaun is an arborist and former mountain guide. The organization says it rescues hundreds of cats every year across Washington. That is its own reported estimate, not an independently audited count. It describes the service as donations-only and says callers are not charged for rescues. Its donation page explains how it funds the work.

Canopy Cat Rescue’s FAQ says a cat missing for several days may still be stuck in a tree, so it recommends checking trees rather than assuming the cat has gone farther away. At night, the organization suggests using a flashlight from the ground: light may reflect from a cat’s eyes and make it easier to spot the animal. Keep the search at ground level; do not climb after a cat.

The rescue says it has reached cats as high as 150 feet. That is the organization’s own account of its highest rescues, not an independently verified measurement. The FAQ also explains that cats may climb up more easily than they climb down because of the shape of their claws. Some eventually descend on their own, while others need help.
When Canopy Cat Rescue says to call
Its FAQ does not set a rigid deadline. If the cat has been in the tree for only a few hours, the organization says a caller can consider waiting to see whether the cat works its way down. If the cat has been stranded overnight, it may be time to call for help. Canopy Cat Rescue also cautions that food at the base of a tree may not tempt the cat down and could attract wildlife. These are the rescue’s recommendations, not universal veterinary or emergency-response rules.

Where the service operates—and what it cannot reach
Canopy Cat Rescue is based in Western Washington and says it travels across the state. For callers in Eastern Washington or elsewhere, it points to a broader cat-in-tree rescue directory through its FAQ. Service availability may depend on location and circumstances, so contact the organization to confirm whether it can respond.

You do not have to be the cat’s owner to ask for help
The rescue says it can respond even when the cat belongs to someone else. It carries microchip scanners and says it works with local shelters or rescue groups if it cannot find an owner. If you have spotted a stranded cat, you can contact the organization with the location and what you have observed.
