Which OTC allergy medicines might a veterinarian consider?
Veterinary guidance names diphenhydramine, cetirizine, and loratadine as antihistamines commonly used for allergies in people that may be considered for dogs. That is not a recommendation to choose one yourself: the veterinarian needs to confirm the exact product and dose for your dog. Human and dog doses differ, and health conditions or interactions with other medicines can change what is appropriate. Do not use a dosing chart or another dog’s experience to decide how much to give. Why the exact formulation matters
Check the complete active-ingredient list with your veterinarian before giving a product. Cold, sinus, and allergy medicines may combine an antihistamine with a decongestant or pain reliever, which can substantially change the risk. A familiar brand name does not guarantee a single ingredient, and products with similar names may have different formulations. What to expect from antihistamines for itching
An antihistamine may not control a dog’s itchy skin. Histamine is only one part of a more complex inflammatory process, and antihistamines have weak anti-inflammatory activity. Itching can have causes other than allergy
Environmental allergens, food allergy, parasites, and infection can all be involved in itching, and they do not call for the same care. Year-round itching can be associated with environmental allergens such as dust mites and/or food allergy. When an ingestion or reaction is urgent
If your dog has eaten a human allergy, cold, or sinus medicine, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly, even if the dog seems well. Do the same if symptoms appear after a dose. Merck lists possible antihistamine toxicity signs that include depression or unusual activity, drooling, rapid breathing or heartbeat, stomach upset, poor coordination, tremors, fever, and seizures. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional instructs you to.
Suspected anaphylaxis is an emergency: seek emergency veterinary assistance immediately rather than trying an OTC medicine at home. Merck’s dog-owner guidance advises immediate emergency care for suspected anaphylaxis.
