Can FIV-Positive Cats Live With a Dog? An Adoption Checklist for Two Cats

FIV-positive cats may share a home with a dog, but infection risk and behavior are separate questions. Use this checklist to verify testing, assess compatibility, introduce safely, and support long-term health.

Yes—FIV-positive cats can share a home with a dog from an infection standpoint. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a feline infection, and ASPCApro states that “FIV can only infect cats, and there is no risk of transmission to humans.” The difficult part of this adoption is not the dog catching FIV; it is confirming the cats’ test results, evaluating every animal’s temperament, and introducing them slowly enough to prevent chasing, fighting, or chronic stress.

What the adoption decision actually involves

A dog cannot be an FIV transmission route. FIV spreads between cats, most commonly through bite wounds, so a household with a dog presents a different question from a household with another cat. The relevant safety questions are:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Are the cats’ positive results confirmed and properly documented?
  • Can the dog remain calm and controllable around cats?
  • Can each cat retreat, eat, sleep, and use a litter box without being cornered?
  • Will the adopter provide veterinary follow-up and a low-stress indoor environment?

FIV status does not predict whether a cat will like a dog, and it does not tell you whether a particular dog will tolerate cats. Those are individual behavior questions that the shelter, rescue, adopter, and veterinarian must answer from records and observation.

What FIV means for the dog, the cats, and people

FIV is a feline infection

ASPCApro identifies FIV as an infection that can affect cats but not humans. Because the virus is feline-specific, the dog in this adoption is not the animal at risk of contracting FIV. The dog also cannot pass FIV to the cats. That does not make every mixed-species interaction safe: a bite can injure a cat, and persistent chasing can cause serious stress even when no virus is involved.

Transmission is primarily associated with cat bites

ASPCApro says FIV is most commonly spread through bite wounds. This is why the cats’ relationship with other cats matters more for transmission than their relationship with a dog. A peaceful dog that never bites a cat does not create an FIV pathway. Conversely, the adopter should not allow any animal to rehearse biting or predatory chasing, regardless of FIV status.

A positive screen needs context

A single positive screening result should not be treated as a complete diagnosis without veterinary interpretation. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) recommends confirmatory testing under current American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) guidance and says shelters should share the test date and test type with adopters. Ask whether the result was a screening result, whether confirmatory testing was performed, and what the veterinarian concluded.

The ASV states: “The ASV does not recommend euthanasia of clinically healthy cats on the basis of a single positive test result.” That statement does not establish that either cat in this adoption is healthy or ill; it explains why the record and follow-up discussion matter more than an isolated label.

Many infected cats have long symptom-free periods

ASPCApro notes that FIV-infected cats can live for many years without clinical signs. Prognosis is individual, however. The veterinarian who examines each cat is the appropriate person to discuss current health, likely monitoring, and any treatment. Do not assume a particular lifespan, medication, supplement, or special diet from the FIV result alone.

What the cohabitation evidence does—and does not—show

A University of Florida Shelter Medicine Program account published in 2017 described a study presented in 2014 and published in The Veterinary Journal in 2014. It followed cats in a home-like setting rather than testing a dog-and-cat household. The figures are useful context, not a guarantee for a new adoption.

Study detail Reported observation How to apply it
138 cats, including eight FIV-positive cats The cats had unrestricted access to one another in the home-like setting. This was cat-to-cat cohabitation, not evidence about a particular dog’s behavior.
50 cats available for testing No FIV-status changes were observed among those tested during the study. It is a finding in that study group, not an individual transmission probability or a universal guarantee.
19 kittens born to five FIV-positive mothers None of the kittens in the reported group became FIV-positive. The result should not be generalized beyond the reported study or used to predict an individual pregnancy or litter.

The University of Florida account concluded: “So, at least for the cats in this study, sharing food and water, minor spats, and mutual grooming did not transmit FIV; nor was there maternal transmission to kittens.” The qualification “for the cats in this study” is essential. The study does not provide a dog-specific risk statistic, prove that every cat pair will remain peaceful, or replace testing and veterinary advice.

What to confirm before you sign the adoption papers

Request a complete record for each cat

Ask the shelter or rescue for each cat’s medical history in writing. At minimum, obtain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the date of every FIV test;
  • the type of test used and whether a positive screen was confirmed;
  • the veterinarian’s interpretation of the result;
  • recent examination notes and any known medical diagnoses;
  • current medications or monitoring instructions, if any;
  • the cats’ vaccination, sterilization, and parasite-control records, where available; and
  • the organization’s policy if a later veterinary test conflicts with the adoption record.

The ASV specifically recommends sharing the test date and type with adopters. Bring the records to your own veterinarian and ask whether additional testing is appropriate under current AAFP guidance. Do not retest casually without a plan for interpreting discordant results.

Ask behavior questions about both sides of the household

FIV results cannot tell you whether the cats have lived with dogs, whether they hide under stress, or whether they defend food and resting places. Ask the shelter for direct observations, foster notes, and details about previous homes. For the dog, document any history of chasing, grabbing, cornering, or injuring small animals. A dog that is obedient outdoors may still become intensely focused on a fast-moving cat indoors.

Useful questions include:

  • Has each cat previously shared space with a calm dog? Under what supervision?
  • What does each cat do when startled: retreat, freeze, swat, or pursue?
  • Does the dog disengage immediately when called away from a moving animal?
  • Can the dog reliably respond to “leave it,” a recall, and a settle cue?
  • Are there separate rooms and elevated escape routes that the cats can reach but the dog cannot?

If the shelter cannot answer, treat the behavior as unknown rather than assuming it is favorable.

Arrange veterinary follow-up before the move

Choose a veterinarian who can see both cats soon after adoption and discuss the dog’s existing care with you. Ask what changes in appetite, weight, energy, mouth, skin, breathing, or elimination should trigger a call. ASPCApro emphasizes preventive veterinary care, regular visits, balanced nutrition, and a low-stress setting for FIV-positive cats. Those measures support health but do not eliminate the need to investigate new symptoms.

How to introduce the cats and dog safely

The University of Florida account recommends careful introductions, close observation, and separation when there is reasonable suspicion of aggressive interaction. The following sequence turns those principles into a practical household plan. There is no fixed number of days; advance only when the animals are consistently calm.

  1. Prepare a cat-only room. Set up food, water, litter boxes, hiding places, scratching surfaces, and sleeping areas behind a closed door. The cats should be able to eat and use the litter box without seeing the dog.
  2. Let everyone decompress. Keep the cats separated while they learn the new home. Maintain the dog’s normal exercise and routine so excitement is not concentrated at the door.
  3. Exchange scent before sight. Swap bedding or cloths between rooms and watch for escalating reactions. Calm investigation is a reason to continue; frantic scratching, lunging, or prolonged distress means slow down.
  4. Use a secure visual barrier. A gate, screen, or partly opened door allows the animals to see one another while preserving an escape route. Keep the dog on a leash and reward looking away, sitting, or responding to you.
  5. Hold brief, controlled sessions. Bring one cat at a time into a larger area only if that cat chooses to approach. Keep the dog far enough away to remain responsive. End the session while both animals are still calm.
  6. Increase time and freedom gradually. Reduce distance, remove barriers, and allow more movement in small increments. Never force a cat toward the dog or allow the dog to chase a retreating cat.
  7. Separate whenever you cannot supervise. Continue using doors, gates, or separate rooms until repeated sessions show that the dog can disengage and the cats can move, rest, eat, and use litter boxes without being pursued.

A hiss, growl, or quick retreat is information, not a reason to punish the cat. A hard stare, stalking, lunging, snapping, cornering, or repeated chase is a reason to stop the session and separate the animals. If aggressive interactions continue, ask your veterinarian for a referral to a qualified behavior professional before trying again.

Managing an FIV-positive cat household after introductions

Protect low-stress access to essentials

Keep food, water, litter boxes, and resting places in locations the dog cannot block. Multiple resources reduce the chance that a cat must pass the dog to meet a basic need. Maintain vertical routes or dog-free rooms so each cat can retreat by choice. Watch for a cat that stops eating, hides continuously, avoids the litter box, or loses access to favorite resting areas.

Keep preventive care routine

Schedule regular veterinary visits and follow the veterinarian’s plan for examinations and testing. Feed a balanced diet recommended for the individual cats. Do not add supplements or medications solely because a cat is FIV-positive unless the veterinarian identifies a reason.

Monitor health without assuming every change is FIV

FIV-positive status is a reason to take changes seriously, not a diagnosis for every symptom. Record appetite, weight, activity, grooming, mouth comfort, and litter-box habits. Contact the veterinarian when a change persists or is accompanied by pain, weakness, breathing difficulty, vomiting, diarrhea, or other concerning signs. The dog’s presence can also cause stress-related changes, so tell the veterinarian exactly when symptoms began and how introductions progressed.

When this adoption is a poor fit

Pause or decline the placement if the dog has a history of injuring small animals, cannot disengage from cats even with professional help, or must be kept in constant high-arousal restraint. The same applies if either cat remains chronically terrified, cannot access food or litter safely, or has medical needs the household cannot reliably meet. A separate living arrangement may be necessary even though the dog cannot contract FIV.

Conversely, an FIV-positive result alone is not a reason to reject clinically healthy cats. The ASV’s position against euthanasia based only on a single positive test underscores the need for confirmation and a fair assessment of the individual animal. Adoption is responsible when the records are transparent, veterinary follow-up is available, and the household can provide safe, low-stress management.

A practical go/no-go checklist

Check Proceed when Pause and resolve first when
FIV documentation You have the date and type of test, confirmation status, and veterinary interpretation for each cat. The shelter cannot explain a positive screen or provide records.
Dog behavior The dog can respond to cues, settle, and disengage from movement. The dog stalks, lunges, snaps, or has a known small-animal injury history.
Cat welfare Each cat has secure hiding places, food, water, litter, and escape routes. A cat is persistently hiding, not eating, or being blocked from resources.
Introduction plan You can provide a separate room, barriers, daily supervision, and gradual sessions. You cannot separate the animals when away or during a setback.
Veterinary support A veterinarian can review records and examine the cats after adoption. No follow-up care is available for interpreting tests or managing illness.

The bottom line for a dog-loving adopter

Two FIV-positive cats can live in a home with a dog because FIV is feline-specific and the dog is not a transmission route. The adoption should move forward only after you verify each cat’s test history, obtain veterinary guidance, evaluate the dog and cats as individuals, and commit to a slow introduction with permanent separation options. The evidence from cat cohabitation is encouraging but limited; it cannot promise that these particular animals will be behaviorally compatible. Let records, observation, and a realistic management plan—not the FIV label alone—decide.
