There is no single new breakthrough that prevents gastrointestinal (GI) disease in general. The clearest established example is colorectal cancer: screening can find and remove precancerous polyps, while several health habits may lower risk. Other proposed prevention strategies—including specific diets and supplements—remain uncertain. This guidance is primarily about people, not pets; it does not establish ways to prevent GI disease in dogs or cats.
What “preventing GI disease” means in practice
GI disease covers many conditions affecting the digestive tract, so prevention is not one-size-fits-all. For colorectal cancer, prevention has a concrete, established tool: screening can detect polyps and allow their removal before they become cancer. Screening can also find cancer earlier. The CDC’s colorectal cancer prevention guidance describes this role; screening is not a guarantee that cancer will never develop.
That is different from ongoing research into possible preventive approaches. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) describes continuing clinical research, but available evidence does not establish a new general-purpose preventive treatment for GI disease.
Why colorectal cancer is the clearest example
Colorectal cancer is common and can develop from polyps. The World Health Organization’s February 13, 2026 fact sheet estimates that, worldwide, there were about 1.9 million new cases and more than 900,000 deaths in 2022; it estimates colorectal cancer represented about 10% of all cancer cases. These are global estimates for 2022, not current-year counts. WHO: Colorectal cancer.

In the United States, the CDC reports that about 93% of colorectal cancers occur in people aged 45 or older. That does not mean younger adults cannot develop it. Age is one factor among several, and family history, prior polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, and inherited syndromes can change a person’s risk.
Who should be screened, and when?
For average-risk adults in the United States, the CDC summarizes U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidance as screening from ages 45 through 75. For ages 76 through 85, the decision should be individualized with a clinician. People with increased risk may need to start earlier or screen more often, so they should ask a healthcare professional about timing rather than assume the average-risk schedule applies.

Risk factors identified by CDC include age, physical inactivity, unhealthy weight, alcohol use, tobacco use, inflammatory bowel disease, a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, and inherited syndromes such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and Lynch syndrome. A family or personal history, IBD, or a known inherited syndrome is a reason to discuss an individualized plan. CDC: Risk factors for colorectal cancer.
How screening options differ
There is no single best test for everyone. CDC notes that screening methods have different benefits and risks. When discussing options, ask whether the test is done at home or in a clinic, how often it is repeated, what preparation or procedure it involves, and what follow-up is required after an abnormal result.

| Test approach | Where and what it involves | What to know about follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Stool-based tests | Some are completed at home using a stool sample; the specific preparation and repeat interval depend on the test. | A positive result on a stool-based screening test requires colonoscopy to complete screening. |
| Colonoscopy | Performed in a clinical setting; preparation and procedure burden differ from at-home stool testing. | Discuss the recommended interval and whether personal risk changes it with a clinician. |
| Flexible sigmoidoscopy | Performed in a clinical setting and examines part of the colon; preparation and procedure burden differ from other options. | Ask what follow-up is needed for the specific finding and whether another test is part of the screening plan. |
| CT colonography | An imaging-based option performed in a clinical setting; preparation and follow-up differ from stool testing. | Ask how an abnormal finding would be followed up and whether colonoscopy would be needed. |
This comparison is about practical workflow, not a ranking of test accuracy or cost. The CDC’s colorectal cancer screening guidance explains that method choice and screening intervals depend on the test and individual circumstances.
What habits may lower colorectal cancer risk?
CDC identifies several steps associated with lower colorectal cancer risk: being physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, not using tobacco, and limiting or avoiding alcohol. These are risk-reduction measures, not a guarantee against cancer, and they do not replace screening when screening is recommended.

What is—and is not—known about diet and supplements?
Evidence does not justify treating a particular diet or supplement as proven colorectal cancer prevention. NCI says it is not known whether calcium supplements lower colorectal cancer risk. It also says evidence does not establish whether a low-fat, low-meat, high-fiber diet lowers risk. These uncertainties are not a reason to start supplements for cancer prevention; discuss supplements and personal health needs with a clinician. NCI: Colorectal Cancer Prevention (PDQ)—Patient Version.
For inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), NIDDK says studies suggest healthy foods and drinks may lower the risk of developing IBD, but that does not prove a particular food, supplement, or microbiome product prevents it. NIDDK also says no specific foods have been found to cause or worsen Crohn’s symptoms. Do not confuse possible associations with an established prevention plan. What to do next
- If you are 45 to 75 and at average risk in the United States, discuss colorectal cancer screening and test options with a healthcare professional.
- If you are younger but have a personal or family history, IBD, or a known inherited syndrome, ask whether you need earlier or more frequent screening.
- If you choose a stool test, understand in advance that a positive result needs colonoscopy follow-up.
- Do not rely on a supplement, special diet, or commercial microbiome product as proven prevention based on the evidence described here.
- For questions about test preparation or usual medicines, follow the instructions for the specific test and ask the clinician who ordered it; requirements vary.
