If your cat is dragging its bottom across the floor, something may be irritating or hurting the area around the anus. Scooting is a symptom, not a diagnosis: possible causes include anal sac disease, parasites, itchy skin, stool or litter caught in the fur, and a growth. Check for obvious residue, but contact a veterinarian if the scooting persists or recurs, your cat seems painful, or you see a sore, discharge, or growth.
Why do cats scoot?
Cats may scoot to relieve irritation or discomfort around the anus. The movement alone cannot show what is causing it, and several conditions can look similar from the outside.
Anal sac problems
Anal sacs are small structures on either side of the anus. They normally release a little fluid during defecation, but can become impacted, infected, abscessed, or cancerous. Possible signs include scooting, licking or biting at the area, and painful defecation or straining. The Merck Veterinary Manual says anal sac disease is much less common in cats than in dogs; among feline cases, impaction is the most common form. A veterinarian typically examines the rectum to diagnose it and may recommend further tests if infection or a tumor is suspected. Merck Veterinary Manual
Parasites, itchy skin, or something caught in the fur
Worms or other parasites, itchy skin, and stool or litter stuck around the rear can also prompt scooting. A visible piece of residue may be the explanation, but recurring scooting should not automatically be assumed to be a hygiene problem or an anal sac issue. PDSA

A sore or growth
A growth near the anus needs veterinary assessment. An oozing sore beside the anus may indicate an abscess; do not try to diagnose or treat one at home. VCA Animal Hospitals
What to do if your cat is scooting
- Look under the tail. Check for visible stool, litter, or other material, without forcing your cat to tolerate handling.
- Remove only what comes away easily. If residue is stuck, gentle bathing or removal is reasonable only if it releases without difficulty. Stop if it does not, or if your cat appears uncomfortable, and contact a veterinarian. PDSA
- Arrange veterinary advice when signs persist or look concerning. Call if scooting is frequent or persistent, your cat seems painful, or you notice a growth, sore, or discharge beside the anus.
- Share relevant changes. Tell the veterinarian about straining, painful defecation, constipation, diarrhea, and whether the scooting has happened before. These details can help guide the assessment; bowel problems and other health factors may be relevant to recurring anal sac disease. Merck Veterinary Manual and VCA Animal Hospitals
When should you call a veterinarian?
Contact a veterinarian for frequent or persistent scooting, signs of pain, a visible growth, or a sore or discharge next to the anus. Painful defecation or straining also deserves attention, particularly when it occurs with scooting.

Because different problems can cause the same behavior, diagnosis depends on an examination rather than scooting alone. If anal sac disease is suspected, the veterinarian generally performs a rectal examination. Further tests may be needed if infection or a tumor is suspected. Treatment depends on the cause, so do not express anal sacs, give a dewormer, or apply medication without veterinary advice.
