Fresh coriander leaves, which Americans usually call cilantro, are listed as an acceptable fresh green for guinea pigs in veterinary and animal-welfare feeding guidance. They belong in a small, varied portion of greens on top of a diet built on hay or grass and guinea pig pellets. They do not replace either one. Seeds and dried coriander spice are a different matter, and the guidance does not cover them the same way.
Which form of coriander is being discussed
The word “coriander” covers the whole plant, and the feeding advice covers only one part of it. Before offering it, check which form you have in hand.
| Form | What feeding guidance says | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh leaves (cilantro) | Listed as an acceptable green by VCA and by North Carolina State University’s veterinary hospital | This is the food the guidance supports. Offer it as one of several fresh greens. |
| Coriander seeds | Not stated in the guidance reviewed | Do not treat the leaf recommendation as applying to seeds. |
| Dried coriander spice | Not stated in the guidance reviewed | Do not substitute dried spice for fresh leaves. Seasoned or processed foods are not part of this advice. |
Where cilantro fits in a guinea pig’s diet
Merck Veterinary Manual’s review, last revised in May 2026 and written by Miranda J. Sadar, DVM, DACZM, describes guinea pigs as “obligate herbivores and hindgut fermenters.” In practical terms, their digestion depends on a steady supply of long fiber. Hay or grass should make up the bulk of what they eat, with pellets formulated for guinea pigs and a range of fresh vegetables and herbs alongside them.
Cilantro is one of those fresh additions. It can add variety, but it is not a staple and it cannot carry the diet on its own.

Vitamin C is not covered by cilantro alone
Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so it has to come from food every day. Cilantro is an acceptable green, but the guidance does not present it as a dependable vitamin C source. North Carolina State University’s veterinary guidance specifically points to bell peppers as a reliable option. A feeding plan that relies on cilantro for vitamin C would be incomplete.
How to introduce cilantro safely
Sudden diet changes are a known cause of food refusal, and VCA advises introducing new foods gradually. Follow these steps the first time you offer it:

- Start with a small amount of fresh leaves mixed into the greens your guinea pig already eats.
- Keep hay available at all times, and keep the pellet portion the same as before.
- Watch appetite, drinking, and droppings over the following day or two.
- If the guinea pig eats the new leaves well and nothing changes, you can offer cilantro again as part of a varied rotation of greens.
- If you see any sign of trouble, stop offering the new food and contact a veterinarian.
How much cilantro is appropriate
No cilantro-specific serving size or frequency is established in the veterinary and animal-welfare guidance reviewed. Any number you read elsewhere should be treated as a personal estimate, not a measured guideline. As general cautious advice, offer a small amount as part of varied greens rather than a large bunch or a single green every day.
