Offer the red flesh alone, with the rind and seeds removed, and keep it a minor part of the diet. Hay, a measured amount of pellets, and fresh vegetables should make up almost everything your guinea pig eats.
How much watermelon is reasonable
Oxbow Animal Health, a pet nutrition company, describes a small cube of watermelon flesh once a week as a safe serving. That is the company’s own guidance for its watermelon question, not a veterinary consensus or a fixed standard set by a regulator, so treat it as a conservative upper limit rather than a target. Many owners will find that a sliver offered now and then is enough.
Sugar is the main reason for the limit. The Veterinary Care Association (VCA) notes that fruit is high in sugar and that feeding too much may upset the balance of bacteria in the intestine. In its words, this “may cause serious and potentially life-threatening diarrhea.” Watermelon is mostly water, but its sugar still counts toward the total fruit a guinea pig takes in, so fruit should never become a daily habit or a bulk food.
How to prepare it
- Wash the outside of the melon before cutting so surface dirt does not transfer to the flesh.
- Cut away all green rind and the white layer just beneath it.
- Remove every seed, including the small white ones in seedless varieties.
- Offer a small cube of flesh at room temperature. Discard any leftovers that have sat out for more than a few hours.
Oxbow’s guidance specifically advises avoiding rind and seeds, so these steps follow its advice for watermelon rather than a general rule for all fruit.

Where watermelon fits in the diet
Guinea pigs do best on a diet built around foods that are high in fiber and low in sugar. VCA recommends unlimited timothy or another low-calcium hay, a smaller daily portion of high-fiber timothy-based pellets, and fresh leafy greens and vegetables. The RSPCA similarly says good-quality hay should make up most of the diet and be available at all times.

Introducing new foods safely
The RSPCA advises avoiding sudden dietary changes. Guinea pigs have sensitive digestive systems, so introduce any new food slowly and watch the next day or two. Start with a very small piece, and do not add watermelon alongside several other new foods at once, because you will not know which one caused a problem.

When to call a veterinarian
The RSPCA advises consulting a vet immediately if eating, drinking, or toilet habits change. For watermelon in particular, watch for these signs after a treat:
- Soft or watery droppings, or diarrhea
- Reduced appetite or refusing hay
- Less drinking than usual
- Hunched posture, lethargy, or signs of abdominal discomfort
Do not wait to see whether a problem clears on its own. Guinea pigs can decline quickly when their digestion is disturbed.

What the guidance does and does not establish
The watermelon-specific advice in this article comes from Oxbow Animal Health. VCA and the RSPCA support limiting fruit and prioritizing hay, pellets, and vegetables, but neither gives a watermelon-specific serving size. No published study on watermelon in guinea pigs was found in the sources reviewed, so the serving guidance above reflects general fruit-feeding advice from these organizations rather than measured safety thresholds. If your guinea pig has a health condition, is overweight, or has had digestive trouble before, ask your veterinarian before offering any fruit.
VCA’s general vitamin C figure for guinea pigs, 10 to 50 mg per day depending on factors such as age and health, is a daily requirement and does not on its own justify watermelon. A fresh vegetable portion is the more reliable way to supply vitamin C.
