How often can guinea pigs eat kale?
The RSPCA lists kale among foods that can be given “in small amounts a few times a week.” VCA advises against offering calcium-rich vegetables such as kale daily or free-choice. Together, that guidance makes kale an occasional part of a varied menu, not a staple.
No cited source establishes a universal kale portion in grams or leaves. Offer a small amount rather than relying on an unsupported exact serving size.
Why shouldn’t kale be an everyday food?
Kale is a calcium-rich vegetable. VCA notes that excess calcium-rich vegetables are one of several possible contributors to urinary sludge and stones; infection, obesity, and genetic predisposition can also play a role. Kale alone should not be treated as the cause of urinary disease.

If your guinea pig has urinary problems or another diagnosed health condition, ask a veterinarian about its diet rather than applying general feeding guidance to that individual.
What should a guinea pig eat every day?
Kale should not displace the foods that form the foundation of a guinea pig’s diet: constant access to hay or grass, appropriate pellets, fresh vegetables and greens, and fresh water. Hay and grass also support the high-fiber diet VCA recommends.

PDSA gives one organization-specific daily guide for an adult guinea pig: hay and grass making up 85–90% of the diet, one tablespoon of guinea-pig pellets, and one cup of fresh vegetables, greens, and foraged foods. These are PDSA recommendations, not a universal formula; do not combine them with another organization’s quantities as though they were one standard.

Guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C themselves, so they need to obtain it through their diet. VCA identifies fresh vegetables and vitamin-C-fortified guinea-pig pellets as sources, and gives a daily vitamin C range of 10–50 mg depending on factors such as age, health, stress, and pregnancy. That range is VCA guidance, not an individual prescription.

Do not rely on kale alone to meet your guinea pig’s vitamin C needs. VCA lists options including bell pepper, tomato, turnip, collard greens, and asparagus as vegetables high in vitamin C. Ask a veterinarian whether an individual animal needs supplementation.

How to introduce kale
- Start with a small amount. If kale is new to your guinea pig, introduce it gradually rather than making a sudden diet change. VCA and the RSPCA both advise gradual changes.
- Keep the usual staples available. Maintain constant access to hay or grass, along with the animal’s appropriate regular foods and fresh water.
- Watch for changes. Monitor eating, drinking, and droppings. The RSPCA advises contacting a veterinarian promptly if these habits change.
