North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine classifies basil as low in calcium and moderate in oxalates, so it can fit into a varied salad—but it should not be the only green or a substitute for a dependable vitamin C source.
How basil fits into a guinea pig’s diet
Grass hay should remain the foundation of a guinea pig’s diet. NC State’s general guide recommends roughly 80% high-quality timothy hay, 10% pellets and 10% leafy greens. These proportions describe the overall diet, not a basil serving recommendation. NC State’s guinea pig care guide lists basil as low in calcium and moderate in oxalates, and advises using lower-calcium, lower-oxalate greens as the salad’s base while rotating other greens in smaller quantities.
Other veterinary guidance supports the same broad approach: Merck recommends high-quality grass hay, species-formulated grass-based pellets and produce for adult guinea pigs, with diet changes made gradually. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service also describes a diet centered on grass hay, with some fresh vegetables, a small amount of pellets and vitamin C from vegetables or supplements. How much basil can guinea pigs have?
The reviewed veterinary guidance does not establish a precise basil portion. Avoid treating the general recommendation that leafy greens make up about 10% of the diet as a basil allowance: that share is for leafy greens collectively, and basil is only one possible part of a varied salad. Introduce basil gradually alongside familiar foods, and monitor your guinea pig for any change in appetite or droppings.

Can guinea pigs eat basil every day?
The available guidance does not establish whether basil should be fed daily or specify a weekly frequency. Rather than making basil a routine standalone green, rotate it with other suitable leafy greens and make lower-calcium, lower-oxalate choices the base of the salad. A study summarized in Merck’s 2026 review found an association between being offered more types of produce and a lower likelihood of uroliths: guinea pigs offered 7–10 or more than 10 types were significantly less likely to develop them. That finding does not show that variety—or basil in particular—prevents urinary stones.

Guinea pigs need vitamin C in their diet; basil should not be relied on as their dependable source. NC State recommends bell peppers for most guinea pigs. Merck’s 2026 review gives a general adult requirement of 10–25 mg of vitamin C per kilogram of body weight daily; that is a nutrition reference, not a basil-specific amount. For a guinea pig that is unwell or has a history of urinary problems, ask an exotics veterinarian for advice tailored to the animal rather than relying on a general greens list.
