Can Guinea Pigs Eat Strawberries? Conflicting Veterinary Advice Explained

Guidance on strawberries for guinea pigs is mixed. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s May 2026 husbandry guidance says not to feed berries, while other veterinary and animal-care sources allow fruit as an occasional treat. None of the reviewed sources sets a standard portion of fresh strawberry. The cautious choice is to skip strawberries and provide vitamin C through foods recommended for guinea pigs; if you decide to offer fruit, keep it occasional and do not treat a particular strawberry amount as established veterinary advice.

Why advice about strawberries differs

The recommendations are not fully aligned, so it is important to distinguish berry-specific advice from general guidance about fruit.

  • Merck Veterinary Manual: Its husbandry guidance, reviewed in May 2026, says: “Other fruits (including berries and oranges), carrots, and sugary treats should not be fed.” This is the clearest berry-specific recommendation among the sources reviewed. Merck Veterinary Manual
  • Other sources: PetMD describes fruit as a treat to give in moderation and lists a commercial freeze-dried strawberry treat. VCA says fruit should be offered only occasionally and in small amounts because excess sugar can disrupt gut bacteria and cause serious diarrhea. These are general fruit recommendations, not a fresh-strawberry serving prescription. PetMD VCA Animal Hospitals

The sources do not reconcile their different advice. Choosing to follow Merck means avoiding strawberries; choosing to follow the broader occasional-fruit guidance still does not establish a specific strawberry portion.

There is no established fresh-strawberry portion

None of the reviewed sources gives a strawberry-specific amount for a guinea pig. UC Davis says fruits such as apples and grapes should make up no more than 5% of daily food intake, while PetMD says fruit can ideally be offered once or twice per week. Those recommendations are general, differ in how they express limits, and should not be converted into a precise strawberry dose. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine PetMD

If your guinea pig has a health condition or you want to add fruit to its diet, ask a veterinarian familiar with guinea pigs for individualized advice rather than relying on a guessed portion.

Strawberries contain vitamin C, but they are not necessary

Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so they need it from their diet. The MSD Veterinary Manual lists strawberries among foods high in vitamin C, but that is a nutrient-content listing—not a recommendation to feed strawberries or a serving guide. Merck advises against berries while listing other vitamin-C-containing produce, including bell peppers, tomatoes, kale, parsley, beet greens and spinach. The manuals give different daily vitamin C figures: Merck lists 10–25 mg per kilogram of body weight for adults, and 30 mg/kg or more for growing, pregnant, lactating or ill guinea pigs; MSD lists at least 10 mg/kg per day and 30 mg/kg for pregnant females. These are dietary guidance figures, not amounts to calculate or supplement without considering the animal’s situation and the rest of its diet.

Pellets fortified with vitamin C can lose potency over time. Merck notes that stabilized vitamin C is more shelf-stable; MSD says heat, light and moisture degrade vitamin C in pellets. For a guinea pig with dietary or health concerns, consult a veterinarian about an appropriate diet and vitamin C source.

Keep the staple diet ahead of treats

Fruit is not a substitute for the foods that should form the basis of a guinea pig’s diet. Merck describes an adult diet centered on grass hay, guinea pig pellets and produce, with produce primarily vegetables. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service also advises using fruit sparingly. Merck Veterinary Manual Animal and Veterinary Service, Singapore

PetMD estimates that grasses and hays account for about 80% of the general diet. That figure is general diet context, not a strawberry allowance. PetMD

If you choose to offer fruit

  1. Make the choice deliberately: Following Merck’s berry-specific advice means not offering strawberries. If you instead follow sources that allow occasional fruit, remember they do not specify a fresh-strawberry amount.
  2. Wash fresh produce: UC Davis advises washing fruits and vegetables before feeding them.
  3. Avoid sudden diet changes: Introduce dietary changes gradually. UC Davis warns that abrupt changes can cause gastrointestinal upset and loss of appetite; Merck also recommends gradual changes.
  4. Watch for a problem: VCA warns that excess sugar from fruit can disrupt gut bacteria and cause serious diarrhea. Contact a veterinarian if your guinea pig becomes unwell after eating a new food.

A strawberry-flavored commercial treat is not the same as fresh strawberry. PetMD lists Oxbow Simple Rewards Freeze-Dried Strawberry Small Animal Treats, but that listing does not establish that the product is medically necessary, equivalent to fresh fruit, or consistent with Merck’s advice to avoid berries.
