Most healthy cats should have a full veterinary exam at least once a year. Cats aged 10 and older should generally be seen at least every six months, according to the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines. A cat’s health, behavior, lifestyle, and exam findings can call for more frequent visits, so confirm the right schedule with your veterinarian.
How often should you take your cat to the vet?
Use your cat’s age as a starting point for routine wellness exams:
| Life stage | Age | Routine exam frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Kitten | Birth to 1 year | At least annually as a minimum; visit timing and preventive care should also reflect development and the kitten’s needs. |
| Young adult | 1–6 years | At least once a year. |
| Mature adult | 7–10 years | At least once a year. |
| Senior | 10 years and older | At least every six months. |
These age bands and minimum intervals come from the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines. The guideline describes the categories as a framework, not rigid cutoffs: cats differ, and a veterinarian may recommend a different schedule based on an individual cat’s needs.
Do indoor cats need a vet checkup every year?
Yes. Being an indoor cat does not remove the recommendation for at least annual routine examinations. The schedule should reflect lifestyle and environment, but the annual baseline applies to healthy cats below the senior stage regardless of whether they live indoors. Ask your veterinarian which preventive measures suit your cat’s circumstances.

When should a cat go more often?
Annual or six-monthly wellness exams are routine baselines, not a reason to wait when something changes. Contact your veterinarian for advice about timing if your cat develops a new symptom, a behavior concern, or has a medical condition or care plan that requires monitoring. Age, health, behavior, lifestyle, and examination findings can all affect visit frequency; there is no single schedule for every cat.
What happens during a routine cat checkup?
A wellness visit is more than a vaccine appointment. The veterinarian can review your cat’s history, lifestyle, behavior, and diet; perform a comprehensive physical examination; and assess dental health, pain, body condition, and muscle condition. Together, you can discuss relevant medical conditions and risks, parasite control, dental care, nutrition, and behavior.

How can you make vet visits easier for your cat?
Get your cat used to a secure cat carrier before an appointment. The AAHA/AAFP checklist includes carrier acclimation among preventive-care topics, and its kitten guidance includes acclimating kittens to the carrier, car, and veterinary visits. Let your veterinarian know if travel or handling is difficult; a cat-friendly approach can be tailored to the patient.

For a healthy cat, plan on at least one exam each year until the senior stage, then at least every six months from age 10. Ask your veterinarian to adjust that plan for your cat’s health, behavior, lifestyle, and preventive-care needs. AAHA’s broader preventive-care position, last revised in November 2014, also supports at least annual examinations and individualizing more frequent visits; the age-based intervals above follow the newer 2021 feline guidelines.
