Hale School’s 17 September 2024 consultation outcome retained community access to its grounds, including the oval, for dog walkers who keep dogs on a leash and clean up after them. The school named oval entrances on Hale Road and Williamstown Road for public use; entrances near the Junior School are closed to public access.
What are the rules for walking a dog at Hale School?
- Keep your dog on a leash at all times on school grounds.
- Pick up after your dog.
- Use the oval entrances on Hale Road or Williamstown Road.
- Do not use the Glenelg Avenue, Unwin Avenue or Cobb Street entrances near the Junior School for public access.
These conditions come from Hale School’s 17 September 2024 consultation outcome, which retained local access while directing visitors to the specified entrances. It does not state public opening hours or establish access during school activities, so check with the school if you need to confirm whether a particular visit time is suitable.

Does my dog have to be on a leash?
Yes. The leash requirement applies on the oval and elsewhere on school grounds; the school’s consultation outcome does not create an off-leash exception for the campus. It identifies bushland outside the school perimeter as an off-leash option, but that does not extend to the oval or school grounds.
The school’s current policies directory links a broader Dogs on School Grounds Policy. The linked PDF is version 2, approved in May 2022, and shows a November 2023 review date; that date is not evidence that the policy was subsequently revised. The policy says dogs must be leashed and controlled by a competent person, and that dogs are not permitted in school buildings without permission, in play areas or in the swimming-pool area. It also limits campus access to dogs suited to being around children and crowds.

Why did Hale School set these conditions?
Hale School said it considered closing the grounds to visitors after reports of more off-leash dogs since Covid, incidents of aggression and injury, and owners not cleaning up. It highlighted the safety of younger Junior School pupils and students at Brine House boarding house. The school’s compromise kept community access while setting leash, cleanup, entrance and respectful-use expectations, and said it would continue monitoring the situation.
The school reported that almost 300 local residents submitted written feedback and that about 80 people attended a September public forum. It said residents overwhelmingly valued access to the grounds, while many also raised concerns about off-leash dogs. PerthNow’s 20 September 2024 account described the feedback as a 300-person community survey; Hale School’s own notice specifies almost 300 written submissions.

Does the 2024 decision mean the oval is open at any time?
No such hours are specified in the consultation outcome. The decision confirms community access subject to the stated conditions, but it does not set opening and closing times or say that access is available during school events or activities. For a time-sensitive visit, confirm arrangements with Hale School rather than assuming the grounds are open.
