Yes, iguanas can bite, and a bite can be painful. Green iguanas have teeth built to shear plant material, but those teeth can injure people and pets. Most iguanas try to avoid people; biting is usually a defensive response when an animal is caught, cornered, or handled.
The safest response to a wild iguana is to give it space rather than trying to touch, chase, or capture it. If a bite does happen, wash the area immediately with warm soapy water, cover it with a clean bandage, and obtain medical advice for a serious wound or signs of infection.

When and why do iguanas bite?
Iguanas are not generally looking for people to attack. The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) says iguanas normally avoid people but defend themselves against people or pets that try to catch them or corner them. That makes a bite most likely during an attempted capture, restraint, veterinary handling, or an encounter in which the animal cannot retreat.
A lizard that is frightened may give warning signals before making contact. It may stiffen, gape its mouth, whip its tail, scratch, or attempt to flee. Those signs are a request for distance, not an invitation to investigate. Continuing to approach removes the animal’s escape route and increases the chance of a defensive strike.

Herbivorous does not mean harmless
Green iguanas eat plants, but their mouths are not toothless. UF/IFAS explains that the teeth of a green iguana are designed to shear plant material and can still deliver a painful bite to people and pets. A plant-based diet describes what the animal eats; it does not predict how much force its jaws can apply to a finger, hand, or nose.
Adults can also scratch or strike
UF/IFAS describes adult iguanas as capable of bites and severe scratch wounds, and notes that they can strike with a powerful tail. A person trying to pick up an adult may therefore be injured by a bite, claws, or a tail blow in the same encounter. The UF/IFAS guidance concerns iguanas in the South Florida landscape, so it should not be treated as a measured injury rate for every species, age, or location.
How serious is an iguana bite?
Severity depends on where the teeth make contact, whether the skin is broken, how deeply the animal bites, and whether the person can safely release the animal. There is no established universal probability that an iguana will bite, and the available guidance does not provide a single percentage for wound severity. It is more useful to separate the possible hazards:

| Contact | What is established | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Bite | Green iguana teeth can cause a painful injury to people and pets. | Wash immediately with warm soapy water, cover with a clean bandage, and watch for serious injury or infection. |
| Scratch | UF/IFAS warns that adult iguanas can inflict severe scratch wounds. | Clean the wound promptly and seek medical advice when the injury is serious or worsening. |
| Tail strike | Adult iguanas can strike with a powerful tail, according to UF/IFAS. | Move away without cornering the animal; assess any injury and obtain care when needed. |
| Salmonella exposure | Reptiles, including iguanas, may carry Salmonella on the animal, in feces, or on contaminated habitat objects. | Wash hands after contact and keep reptiles and their equipment away from food-preparation areas. |
A bite can hurt even when it is brief. Do not assume that a small-looking puncture is unimportant, especially if bleeding is difficult to control, the wound is deep, or the injured person has a condition that makes infections more concerning.
Iguana bites and Salmonella: what the evidence does and does not show
Salmonella is a separate health concern from the mechanical injury caused by teeth. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists iguanas among reptiles that can carry Salmonella. People can encounter the bacteria through the animal, its feces, or objects and surfaces in a contaminated habitat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) likewise recommends handwashing after contact with reptiles, their food, or their environments. Read the FDA guidance on reptiles and Salmonella and the CDC reptile-safety guidance for the hygiene precautions.
These sources do not establish that every iguana bite transmits Salmonella. A bite may introduce bacteria from the mouth or surrounding environment, but the evidence cited here supports a general reptile-exposure risk rather than a guaranteed bite-to-infection pathway.

What one captive-iguana study found
A 1998 study recorded 100 instances in which a particular Salmonella serotype was isolated from a captive green iguana. In 74 of those instances, the same serotype was recovered from a subsequent fecal sample. That is a repeated-isolation result within the study’s defined instances. It is not the percentage of all iguanas carrying Salmonella, the rate of human illness, or the probability that a bite causes infection. The study is indexed at PubMed.
How to avoid being bitten by a wild iguana
Distance is the most reliable prevention. The CDC says that keeping your distance from wild animals is the best way to prevent bites and scratches. Apply that advice even when an iguana appears calm or is accustomed to people in a park or neighborhood.
- Stop and give the animal an escape route. Do not block the path it is using to leave. Step back instead of moving closer for a photograph.
- Do not try to catch, feed, pet, or move it. Handling is the situation UF/IFAS specifically identifies as provoking defensive behavior.
- Keep children and pets away. A dog or cat that rushes at an iguana can trigger a bite, scratch, or tail strike. Use a leash and create space before the animal feels trapped.
- Avoid reaching into hiding places. An iguana that cannot see a route out may react suddenly when a hand enters a shrub, hole, or enclosure.
- Call local wildlife or animal-control authorities for a problem animal. If an iguana is inside a building, injured, or repeatedly blocking a hazardous area, use trained assistance rather than attempting removal yourself.
These steps are particularly important in places where large iguanas are established in residential landscapes. They are behavior and safety precautions, not a claim that every encounter will result in a bite.

Safe handling of a pet iguana
A pet iguana may be accustomed to its keeper and still bite when startled, restrained, ill, or handled during a stressful event. Learn the animal’s warning signals and stop handling when it becomes tense, opens its mouth, lashes its tail, or tries repeatedly to escape. A veterinarian experienced with reptiles can demonstrate safer restraint for examinations and nail or health care.
Handwashing and habitat rules
- Wash hands thoroughly with soap and running water after touching the iguana, its food, feces, cage, bedding, water dish, or other habitat items.
- Keep the reptile and its equipment away from kitchen counters, dining tables, sinks used for food, and areas where food is prepared.
- Clean habitat equipment in a location that does not expose household food-preparation surfaces to contamination.
- Supervise children around the animal and teach them not to kiss it, put their hands in their mouths after handling it, or carry it around the home.
Children younger than five should not touch reptiles or their environments, according to the CDC, because they face a higher risk of serious Salmonella illness. The CDC’s broader wildlife guidance also recommends distance from wild animals and explains general bite and scratch precautions.

- Wash the wound immediately. Rinse and wash it with warm, soapy water, as the CDC recommends for wildlife bites and scratches.
- Control bleeding with gentle pressure. Use clean gauze or a clean cloth. If bleeding will not stop, treat that as a reason for urgent medical attention.
- Cover the injury. Place a clean, dry bandage over the washed wound. A basic first-aid kit can provide bandages and gauze, but supplies do not replace professional care.
- Arrange medical advice when the wound is serious or changes. Contact a medical professional for a deep or otherwise serious injury, uncontrolled bleeding, or a wound that becomes red, painful, warm, or swollen.
- Check tetanus status. The CDC advises contacting a medical professional if more than five years have passed since the last tetanus shot.
The CDC recommendations are general wildlife-bite guidance rather than an iguana-specific treatment protocol. A clinician can decide whether the location and depth of the wound require additional cleaning, vaccination, or other treatment. Do not diagnose an infection or assume that a bite is safe simply because the animal is a herbivore or a household pet.
Common misunderstandings about iguana bites
“Iguanas are plant eaters, so they cannot hurt me.”
Their teeth are adapted for cutting vegetation, yet UF/IFAS specifically warns that a green iguana can deliver a painful bite. Diet and bite capability are different questions.
“An iguana will bite whenever a person is nearby.”
UF/IFAS says iguanas normally avoid people. The defensive context matters: trying to catch or corner one is much more provocative than observing it from a safe distance.
“Every iguana bite causes Salmonella.”
FDA and CDC information establishes that reptiles can carry Salmonella and spread it through contact with animals, feces, and contaminated environments. It does not establish that every bite transmits the bacteria. Clean the wound and seek medical advice based on the injury and symptoms.
“There is a reliable percentage for the chance of being bitten.”
No bite-frequency statistic or universal wound-severity rate is established in the cited guidance. Risk changes with species, size, location, handling, and whether the animal is trapped, so a single number would be misleading.
Bottom line
Iguanas can bite, and their bites can be painful. Most avoid people, but a cornered or captured iguana may bite, scratch, or strike with its tail. Give wild animals room, keep pets and young children away, use strict hand hygiene around pet reptiles, and wash any bite immediately with warm soapy water before covering it and seeking medical care for serious or worsening injuries.
