Yes. Mosquitoes can bite cats. A bite may cause a small itchy lesion, mosquito-bite dermatitis, or a more intense hypersensitivity reaction. The more serious concern is heartworm: an infected mosquito can inject heartworm larvae while feeding. Feline heartworm disease can inflame and damage the lungs even when no mature worms are found in the heart.

Indoor living lowers exposure but does not eliminate it because mosquitoes enter homes. The safest plan is veterinarian-directed, year-round heartworm prevention combined with sensible mosquito control around the home. Never apply a human repellent, essential oil, or dog-labeled insecticide to a cat unless your veterinarian specifically confirms that product and use are safe.

What a mosquito bite can do to a cat

A local bite reaction

Mosquitoes pierce the skin to feed. Saliva left in the bite can trigger a small area of redness, swelling, itching, or a crust. Some cats barely react; others scratch enough to create sores or secondary infection. A lesion that persists, spreads, becomes painful, or is heavily irritated should be examined rather than treated from appearance alone.

Mosquito-bite dermatitis and hypersensitivity

Merck Veterinary Manual describes mosquito-bite dermatitis and hypersensitivity in cats. Hypersensitivity lesions may occur on the outer ears (pinnae), face, and paws. Insect-bite dermatitis can also affect the ears, neck, head, and abdomen. Fleas, other insects, allergies, and infections can look similar, so a photograph or location is not enough to identify the cause. A veterinarian can decide whether testing, parasite control, or another skin treatment is needed.

A bite is not proof of heartworm

Seeing a mosquito on your cat or finding one itchy bump does not diagnose heartworm. Heartworm transmission requires the mosquito to be carrying infective larvae. Local skin inflammation and heartworm-associated lung disease are separate problems that can follow the same bite.

How an infected mosquito causes feline heartworm disease

Transmission through the bite wound

An infected mosquito deposits heartworm larvae through the bite. Cats are atypical hosts, so many larvae do not mature, but the journey itself can injure the lungs and airways. The American Veterinary Medical Association’s 2025 brochure notes that one or two adult worms can make a cat sick and that juvenile worms may cause substantial lung damage. A large adult-worm burden is not required for serious disease.

What the timing means

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reports that signs of pathology may begin about 60 to 100 days after initial infection. The same Cornell page describes larvae developing over about eight months in a cat. These are source-specific time frames, not a countdown that lets an owner predict an individual cat’s outcome. A cat can have important respiratory inflammation before an adult worm is detectable.

Exposure occurs indoors and across the United States

Mosquitoes can enter through doors, windows, garages, and other openings. The AVMA reported in 2025 that heartworms are found in all 50 U.S. states. Local mosquito density and climate vary, but there is no indoor-only guarantee and no state in which exposure can be dismissed categorically.

Do indoor cats need heartworm prevention?

Professional guidance supports prevention for cats that live indoors as well as those that go outside. The American Heartworm Society (AHS) states that year-round prevention is the safest approach and recommends choosing a product with a veterinarian. Indoor status changes exposure probability; it does not remove the possibility of a mosquito entering the home.

Heartworm preventives are used by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian. A product kills susceptible heartworm stages before they can progress, but it is not a mosquito shield and does not prevent every disease a mosquito might transmit. Give it on the schedule on its current label and the schedule your veterinarian prescribes.

How veterinarians compare feline preventives

The AHS feline chart, revised May 15, 2025, lists oral and topical options, including products based on selamectin, milbemycin oxime, moxidectin combinations, and other labeled ingredients. The chart shows why one product cannot be selected safely from a generic list.

Decision factor What to confirm with the veterinarian
Route Whether a topical application or oral medication is practical for this cat and household.
Dosing interval The exact interval on the current product label; do not assume every preventive follows the same schedule.
Parasite coverage Which heartworm stages and other parasites the specific product is labeled to control.
Minimum age and weight The label limits for the cat’s age and current body weight.
Precautions Warnings involving health conditions, other medicines, handling, or contact with treated animals.
Household circumstances Outdoor access, travel, other pets, ability to give doses reliably, and local mosquito exposure.

Do not compare products by price or assume that a product licensed for dogs is interchangeable with a feline product. Confirm the current label and your cat’s history before starting, switching, or combining preventives.

What to do after two missed months

Contact the prescribing veterinarian after two missed months rather than improvising a catch-up schedule. The AHS owner guidance discusses restarting prevention and retesting six months later, but the exact plan depends on the medication, dates missed, previous doses, and the cat’s health. Do not double a dose unless the veterinarian directs it.

Ways to reduce mosquito exposure without putting your cat at risk

Exposure control is useful, but it supplements medication-based heartworm prevention rather than replacing it.

Keep indoor barriers working

  • Repair torn window and door screens and keep screened openings closed when mosquitoes are active.
  • Use closed or screened rooms for cats that are especially sensitive to bites.
  • Check garages, porches, and utility-room doors for gaps that allow insects inside.

Screens reduce entry; they do not guarantee that a mosquito cannot reach a cat.

Remove breeding sites

  • Empty or refresh water in outdoor containers, plant saucers, children’s toys, and other items that collect rain.
  • Keep gutters and drains clear so water does not stand for long periods.
  • Ask local public-health or pest professionals about lawful environmental larval-control methods for persistent standing water.

Limit peak feeding exposure

Mosquito activity varies by species and location. Keeping cats inside during periods when mosquitoes are feeding heavily can reduce bites. John McCall, MS, PhD, writing for the AHS, describes repellents and environmental measures as an adjunct to—not a replacement for—year-round prevention.

Do not improvise a cat repellent

Merck advises asking a veterinarian before using an insecticide on a cat. A mosquito-repelling product used on dogs may be unsafe for cats. Do not apply human skin repellents, essential oils, or dog-labeled products directly to feline skin or fur without explicit veterinary instructions. Cats groom treated fur, and an ingredient that is tolerated by another species can be dangerous to them.

Signs that warrant veterinary attention

Possible heartworm-associated signs

Feline heartworm disease can be subtle or intermittent. Sources list:

  • coughing or wheezing that comes and goes;
  • rapid, labored, or difficult breathing;
  • vomiting;
  • reduced appetite;
  • lethargy or unusual tiredness;
  • weight loss;
  • fainting, seizures, collapse, or sudden death in severe cases.

These signs overlap with asthma, infection, gastrointestinal disease, and other conditions. They are not a diagnosis, and an apparently normal cat may still have early infection.

Skin signs after a bite

Arrange an examination for lesions that remain, recur, spread, bleed, produce discharge, or cause persistent scratching. The ears, face, paws, neck, head, and abdomen are commonly reported sites for insect-bite reactions, but location alone cannot identify the trigger. Avoid giving human antihistamines, pain medicines, steroid creams, or other topical products unless your veterinarian supplies the drug, dose, and instructions.

When it is an emergency

A cat with breathing difficulty, collapse, fainting, seizures, blue or gray gums, or sudden severe weakness needs urgent veterinary assessment. Keep the cat calm and minimize handling while arranging emergency care. Do not wait for a visible bite or try to test for heartworm at home.

How veterinarians investigate suspected heartworm or bite disease

Heartworm diagnosis is more complicated in cats than in dogs. A veterinarian may combine the history and physical examination with blood tests and imaging. Results can be difficult to interpret because cats may carry only immature worms, may clear infection, or may have lung damage without an easily detectable adult worm. A negative or inconclusive test does not make breathing distress safe to ignore.

For skin disease, the veterinarian may examine the distribution and type of lesions, look for fleas or other parasites, and consider allergies, infection, or another dermatologic condition. The appearance of one bump cannot establish that a mosquito caused it.

Is there a natural way to prevent feline heartworm?

No natural method in the cited veterinary guidance is established as a substitute for a licensed heartworm preventive. Screens, standing-water control, and reducing peak mosquito exposure can lower contact, but they do not reliably prevent an infected mosquito from biting. The AHS describes repellents and environmental measures as additions to medication, not replacements.

Essential oils and homemade sprays are especially poor substitutes: their safety, concentration, licking exposure, and effectiveness are uncertain, and some ingredients can poison cats. Ask a veterinarian before using any insecticide or repellent around a cat, including products marketed as plant-based.

A practical prevention plan for cat owners

  1. Book a preventive-care discussion. Tell the veterinarian whether the cat is strictly indoors, travels, goes onto a balcony or porch, or lives with outdoor pets.
  2. Choose a labeled feline product. Review route, interval, parasite coverage, minimum age and weight, and precautions using the current label and the AHS chart revised May 15, 2025.
  3. Set a reliable reminder. Record each dose and contact the clinic if a dose is late or missed; after two missed months, call before restarting or changing the schedule.
  4. Inspect mosquito barriers. Repair screens, close gaps, and keep indoor resting areas away from open, unscreened windows.
  5. Remove standing water. Check containers, gutters, drains, and other outdoor items at least weekly during mosquito season in your area.
  6. Monitor for changes. Note recurring cough, wheeze, appetite loss, vomiting, lethargy, weight loss, skin lesions, or unusual breathing.
  7. Seek urgent care for breathing trouble or collapse. These signs require immediate assessment regardless of whether a mosquito bite was seen.
