Can My Cat Take My Dog’s Medicine? What’s Safe—and What to Do After Exposure

Don’t give your cat your dog’s medicine unless a veterinarian approves the exact product and dose. Some pain relievers and dog flea treatments can cause severe poisoning.

No—not unless your veterinarian has specifically approved the exact medicine and dose for your cat. A dog’s medication is not automatically safe for a cat, and you cannot make it safe by adjusting the dose for your cat’s weight. Some products, including acetaminophen and certain dog flea treatments, can cause severe poisoning or death in cats. If your cat has already swallowed, licked, or been given a dog medication, call a veterinarian promptly and keep the product packaging nearby.

Why a dog’s medicine may be unsafe for your cat

Cats and dogs can process medicines differently. Safety depends on the exact drug, formulation, concentration, route, dose, and the cat’s individual health—not just the animal’s size. A dose that is appropriate for a dog cannot be converted into a cat dose by scaling it to weight.

Veterinarians may sometimes prescribe a medicine approved for another species or for people when appropriate. That is a clinical decision: the veterinarian must choose the medicine and direct its use for the particular cat. Do not share a dog’s prescription or leftover medication with your cat unless your veterinarian has explicitly approved it.

Keep pain relievers away unless your veterinarian directs otherwise

Do not give your cat human or dog pain medicine on your own. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that cats are especially sensitive to side effects from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), in part because they do not break down these medicines as well. It also states that acetaminophen is fatal to cats. Aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen should not be given without veterinary instructions. Read the FDA’s animal-drug FAQ.

Dog flea treatments are a serious risk to cats

Some dog flea and tick products contain pyrethrins or pyrethroids, including permethrin, which can severely poison cats. A cat can be exposed if the product is applied directly to the cat or if the cat licks or has close contact with a recently treated dog. Product risk varies with the active ingredient, concentration, formulation, route, and amount of exposure, so do not assume a product is safe based on its name or on how it is used for a dog. Merck Veterinary Manual explains ectoparasiticide use and toxicity in small animals.

Possible signs include drooling, vomiting, agitation or unusual excitability, muscle tremors, seizures, weakness, and difficulty breathing. Tremors, seizures, or breathing problems require emergency veterinary care. Do not wait for symptoms if you know or suspect your cat has been exposed: Pet Poison Helpline advises contacting a veterinarian or poison-control service after suspected flea-product exposure.

What to do if your cat got your dog’s medicine

  1. Call a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Do this even if your cat seems normal; the right response depends on the specific product and exposure.
  2. Have the package or label ready. Tell the professional the product name and active ingredients if available, how the cat was exposed, the estimated amount, and when it happened.
  3. Follow the professional’s instructions. Do not induce vomiting or try a home remedy unless a veterinary professional gives specific directions. VCA warns that salt or hydrogen peroxide can poison or injure a cat and make treatment more complicated. See VCA’s guidance on toxic household hazards for cats.
  4. Seek emergency care for severe signs. Seizures, tremors, or trouble breathing are emergencies. If the exposure involved a flea product, Pet Poison Helpline describes exposure from contact with treated dogs; call rather than waiting to see whether signs develop.

How to prevent medication mix-ups

  • Use only medicines and parasite-prevention products approved or specifically directed for your cat.
  • For flea and tick prevention, check the current label for the intended species, active ingredient, formulation, approved age and weight range, route, and duration. Ask your veterinarian whether the product suits your cat.
  • Keep dog medicines and treatments separate from cat supplies, and prevent your cat from licking a recently treated dog when the product label or veterinarian calls for separation.
  • If you are unsure whether a product is safe, do not apply or give it until you have checked with your veterinarian.
