That can make a song sound incomplete, faint or impossible to identify even when lower notes remain audible. There is no age at which bird sounds universally become inaudible: the result depends on the song’s frequency and loudness, distance, wind and other background noise, and your own frequency-by-frequency hearing thresholds.
A hearing test called pure-tone audiometry is the reliable way to find out what you can hear. It is more useful than guessing from age or relying on an online tone test.

What changes in an older birder’s hearing?
Presbycusis is a gradual, usually bilateral decline in hearing caused by degeneration of sensory hair cells in the inner ear. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force identifies it as the most common cause of hearing loss in older adults and describes it as a progressive loss of ability to perceive high-frequency tones.
“High frequency” does not mean “ultrasonic.” Human hearing spans a broad range, and ordinary speech occupies much of the lower and middle portion. Presbycusis commonly affects the upper end first, so a person may continue to hear a bird’s lower whistle or chatter while losing the fine, high notes that carry species-specific detail. The change is gradual for many people, but the pace and severity vary with age, lifetime noise exposure, disease, heredity and individual ear history. The two ears are often affected together, although one-sided or noticeably asymmetric change deserves particular attention.

Aging also can affect how the brain separates a target sound from competing sounds. Consequently, a birder may detect that a bird is calling but lose the timing, pitch contour or individual notes needed to identify it, especially in a busy woodland or windy marsh.
How high are common bird songs?
Bird vocalizations occupy a wide range rather than a single “bird frequency.” Cornell Lab of Ornithology reported that many songs fall roughly between 1,000 and 8,000 hertz (1–8 kHz). Some familiar examples sit near the upper edge or above it:
| Bird | Reported frequency range | What that can mean for an older listener |
|---|---|---|
| Brown Creeper | 3,750–8,000 Hz | Lower portions may remain audible while the highest phrases become faint or disappear as high-frequency sensitivity declines. |
| Cedar Waxwing | 6,000–8,000 Hz | Most of the call is in a high band, so reduced sensitivity there can make the sound difficult to detect or characterize. |
| Blackpoll Warbler | 8,000–10,000 Hz | Its reported range reaches above 8 kHz, where many older adults have substantially elevated thresholds. |
These ranges describe the frequencies measured for the cited species, not a guarantee that every individual song, recording or note occupies the entire range. A bird can also produce harmonics and rapidly changing notes, so two listeners with similar average hearing can experience the same song differently.
Why can you hear a bird but no longer identify it?
Identification depends on more than detecting any sound. Four interacting factors explain most “I hear it, but I cannot tell what it is” experiences.

1. The song’s energy may sit above your threshold
An audiogram plots the quietest tone you can detect at several frequencies. If a song’s strongest energy falls in a frequency band where your threshold is elevated, the note may be missing even though lower components come through. A phrase can therefore sound shorter, duller or less distinctive rather than simply silent.
2. Distance and loudness reduce the margin
Sound weakens as the bird gets farther away. A nearby, loud singer may remain audible while a distant individual of the same species vanishes. The relevant question is whether the song reaches your ear above your threshold, not whether the species is inherently “too high” for your age.
3. Wind and other birds mask quiet notes
Wind, running water, traffic and chorus activity can cover a narrow band of a song. Masking is especially troublesome when the missed element is a brief high note surrounded by lower background noise. A quiet morning in an open position can reveal details that disappear at the same spot during a windy or crowded dawn chorus.
4. Auditory processing affects separation and timing
Even when a tone is technically audible, the brain must segregate it from competing sources and track its pattern. Difficulty following a rapid phrase in background noise may reflect both peripheral hearing loss and age-related changes in processing. Only a clinical assessment can sort out the contributions.

What research shows about high-frequency hearing with age
The 2019 Swedish cohort
An Audiology Research study published in 2019 measured 286 people at age 85. Of these, 182 had also been followed longitudinally from age 75 to 85. The study found considerable additional decline over that decade at frequencies above 1 kHz. Results differed by sex and from person to person, demonstrating why an average age trend cannot predict one birder’s hearing.
The 1998 high-frequency study
A 1998 study in the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research examined 3,396 adults aged 48–92 at 9–20 kHz. Older groups had higher hearing thresholds and more responses that could not be measured at those very high frequencies. The pattern remained after adjustment for gender and conventional hearing loss. This matters for birding because a listener can have a familiar-looking standard hearing result yet still show substantial loss at the upper frequencies where some bird notes occur.
Neither study supplies a universal “too old to hear birds” cutoff. They describe population patterns, while audibility in the field depends on the particular song, sound level and listening conditions.

| Observation | More consistent with a song or setting issue | More consistent with a hearing issue |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | You hear the same species when close but not across a valley or road. | You miss nearby high notes repeatedly, even in quiet conditions. |
| Background | The call returns when wind, water or other birds stop. | You struggle with many voices in ordinary conversation or group settings. |
| Frequency | Lower-pitched calls are clear while one unusually high species is absent. | High notes across many species, alarms or musical instruments seem reduced. |
| Symmetry | Both ears seem similar and the problem changes with your position. | One ear is suddenly or noticeably worse than the other. |
| Repetition | A recording played louder or from closer range restores the detail. | Repeated listening in a quiet place still omits the same high elements. |
This is an observation framework, not a self-diagnosis. A bird’s loudness varies from singer to singer, and a recording played through different speakers is not a calibrated hearing test.

Formal audiometric testing is the gold standard for measuring hearing sensitivity, according to the National Institutes of Health. The USPSTF describes pure-tone audiometry as the diagnostic confirmation method. An appointment can show the threshold for each ear at several frequencies and reveal whether the loss is mainly high-frequency, broadly distributed or asymmetric.
- Arrange a professional hearing evaluation. Ask for a diagnostic assessment rather than relying on an app or online tone generator. Tell the clinician that bird-song identification is an important listening task and that you want frequency-specific results.
- Review the audiogram by frequency and ear. A single average number can hide a steep drop at the upper end. Ask which frequencies are elevated, whether the two ears differ and how reliable the measurements are.
- Report real-world difficulties. Note whether you miss high notes, have trouble in a dawn chorus, need repetition in conversation or notice tinnitus, dizziness or a sudden change. These details help the clinician interpret the graph.
- Follow the clinician’s next steps. The appropriate response depends on the pattern and cause. Do not assume that a generic amplifier or an “ultrasonic” gadget can restore frequencies that the ear no longer detects; the evidence here does not establish such products as a treatment.
Online tone tests are particularly unreliable for this question. Device speakers, headphones, volume settings and software limits can produce false reassurance or unnecessary alarm, and they cannot assess the ear medically.

Choose the quietest listening position
Move away from roads, streams and dense groups when safe to do so. Face the likely source and use natural cover or a building to block steady wind. A small change in position can improve the signal-to-noise ratio without changing the bird.
Reduce distance when possible
Approach slowly and ethically, avoiding disturbance, or wait for the bird to move closer. Compare what you hear nearby with what was lost at a distance; this helps separate propagation and masking from your frequency threshold.
Use the whole vocal pattern
Listen for rhythm, phrase length, lower notes, pauses and repetition rather than one very high element. Visual confirmation, habitat and behavior can support an identification, but they should not be used to force a species call that the sound does not support.

When should a birder seek medical advice promptly?
Make a routine hearing appointment if high notes are repeatedly missing, conversations in background noise are becoming difficult, or you are turning up sound more than before. Seek prompt medical evaluation for a sudden or rapidly worsening change, a pronounced difference between ears, or hearing loss accompanied by other concerning symptoms. Those situations should not be attributed automatically to normal aging.
The practical answer for older birders
Older birders can absolutely continue to hear and identify many birds. Presbycusis makes the highest and faintest song components less available for some people, and species whose energy is concentrated around 6–10 kHz can be especially challenging. Other older listeners retain enough sensitivity to hear those same calls clearly. The only defensible individual answer comes from the relationship between a song’s frequency and level, the listening environment and a frequency-specific audiogram—not from a birthday or a single “normal” hearing number.
