A puppy with confirmed canine demodectic mange (demodicosis) can usually be around other dogs because this condition is not considered contagious through ordinary dog-to-dog contact. Merck Veterinary Manual states that “the disease is not considered to be contagious,” and VCA says exposure is not considered dangerous for a healthy dog.
The important qualification is diagnostic: “mange” can also mean sarcoptic mange, which spreads readily between dogs and can affect people. Until a veterinarian identifies the mite type, use the clinic’s advice rather than assuming that every case is demodectic.

Why demodectic mange usually does not spread between dogs
Demodectic mange is caused by Demodex mites living in hair follicles and associated skin glands. Small numbers of these mites are normally present on dogs, so finding a mite does not automatically mean a dog caught an infection from another animal. Clinical disease develops when mite numbers increase and the skin cannot keep them under control, producing hair loss, redness, scaling, crusting or inflammation.
The recognized early-life transfer occurs from a mother dog to her puppies while they nurse. Merck describes transmission during the first 72 hours after birth; VCA describes the first few days. This maternal transfer explains how puppies acquire mites, but it is not evidence that an affected puppy will pass demodicosis to another dog at daycare, in a home or during play.

For that reason, routine isolation is generally unnecessary when a veterinarian has confirmed demodicosis. A healthy household dog does not ordinarily need to be removed from the puppy solely because of this diagnosis, and people are not considered at risk from canine demodectic mites.
First confirm which kind of mange the puppy has
The word “mange” describes several mite-related diseases. Contact precautions depend on the specific diagnosis, not on the visible appearance of the rash. A puppy with itching and hair loss may have demodicosis, sarcoptic mange, another skin disorder or a secondary infection. Ask the veterinarian which mite was identified and whether testing is complete before arranging close contact with unfamiliar dogs.
| Condition | What the veterinary sources establish | What that means for contact |
|---|---|---|
| Canine demodicosis (demodectic mange) | Demodex mites are commonly present on dogs; clinical disease reflects an abnormal increase. It is not considered contagious between dogs. | Ordinary contact with a healthy dog is generally acceptable once the diagnosis is confirmed. Follow treatment and monitoring instructions for the affected puppy. |
| Sarcoptic mange (canine scabies) | This is a different mite disease and is highly contagious to dogs and humans. | Keep the dog away from other animals and people as directed by a veterinarian until appropriate treatment has begun and the clinic says contact is safe. |
Merck Veterinary Manual’s owner guidance and VCA’s client information make this distinction explicitly. If the clinic has only said “mange,” or if scraping results are pending, ask whether sarcoptic mange has been ruled out. Do not make a socialization or boarding decision from the label alone.

Keep normal, supervised interactions
For a puppy with confirmed demodicosis, normal household interaction can usually continue. Supervised play with a healthy resident dog, walks and age-appropriate socialization are not normally restricted because of transmission risk. Use ordinary safety rules: separate dogs if play becomes rough, if the puppy is exhausted or painful, or if either animal is showing illness unrelated to mites.

Tell facilities about the diagnosis
Dog daycares, trainers, groomers and boarding facilities may have their own policies. Explain that a veterinarian diagnosed demodicosis and provide the clinic’s written instructions if requested. A facility may still defer attendance because of open skin lesions, discomfort, medication needs or concern that the diagnosis is not yet confirmed. That is an operational policy, not proof that demodex spreads through casual contact.
Do not use isolation as a substitute for diagnosis
Separating the puppy can create stress and interrupt social development while leaving the real problem unresolved. If contagious sarcoptic mange has not been excluded, however, temporary separation is sensible until the veterinarian advises otherwise. The decision should be based on the identified mite and the puppy’s clinical condition.
How veterinarians diagnose the problem
Veterinarians commonly confirm demodicosis with skin scrapings examined for mites. The clinician may also examine hair, crusts or affected areas and investigate other causes of hair loss and itching. A single visit may not answer every question if the skin is inflamed or if more than one condition is present, so ask what was tested and what remains uncertain.

The extent of disease matters:
- Localized demodicosis: limited patches of hair loss or inflammation. Merck’s owner guidance says these cases are often limited and frequently resolve without treatment, although the puppy still needs veterinary follow-up.
- Generalized demodicosis: widespread or multiple affected areas. Merck characterizes generalized disease as serious and requiring medical treatment.
- Secondary infection: damaged skin can become infected, adding pustules, odor, discharge, pain or worsening inflammation. VCA and Merck both emphasize veterinary assessment and treatment when infection is present.
Do not substitute an over-the-counter mite product, home scraping tool or internet treatment schedule for a diagnosis. Products differ in safety, and a puppy’s age, weight, breed, other medicines and skin condition affect what a veterinarian can prescribe.

How to protect the puppy while it recovers
Follow the prescribed plan exactly
Demodicosis is a medical condition even though it is not a routine contagious-disease problem. Give prescribed medicines and use medicated washes or dips only as instructed. Do not stop because the coat appears better; the clinic may need follow-up examinations to decide when treatment is complete.
Watch the skin and the puppy’s general health
Keep a simple record of new bald spots, redness, crusting, odor, scratching, appetite and energy. Photographing the same areas in consistent lighting can help the veterinarian judge change over time. Contact the clinic if lesions spread, the puppy becomes painful, stops eating, seems weak or develops discharge or a strong odor.
Use sensible household hygiene
Routine cleaning is reasonable for comfort and general pet care, but confirmed demodicosis does not require a special decontamination campaign aimed at preventing dog-to-dog transmission. Wash bedding when it is dirty, keep living areas dry and follow any cleaning directions attached to a prescribed product. Avoid harsh chemicals or repeated bathing that can further irritate damaged skin.
When contact with other dogs should wait
Even when transmission is not the concern, postponing visits can be the safest choice in several situations:

- The diagnosis is suspected but the mite type has not been identified.
- The veterinarian is concerned about sarcoptic mange or another contagious skin disease.
- The puppy has fever, marked lethargy, extensive sores, pain or a diagnosed secondary infection.
- The puppy is receiving a treatment that requires observation, restricted activity or separation from other animals.
- The other dog is very young, elderly, pregnant, immunocompromised or medically fragile and the veterinarian recommends extra caution.
These precautions address diagnostic uncertainty, illness and individual vulnerability. They do not change the usual contagiousness classification of confirmed demodicosis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Questions to ask your veterinarian
Bring specific questions rather than relying on the general word “mange.” Useful questions include:
- Was a Demodex mite identified, or is the diagnosis still provisional?
- Has sarcoptic mange been ruled out?
- Is the disease localized or generalized?
- Are there signs of a bacterial or yeast infection that also need treatment?
- Can the puppy attend daycare, training, grooming or boarding now?
- When should the puppy return for a recheck, and what changes should prompt an earlier call?
The answers determine practical restrictions more reliably than the appearance of the skin. A clinic may also adjust advice for the puppy’s age, concurrent illness or the presence of other pets.

Assuming every mange case is contagious
Demodectic and sarcoptic mange are not interchangeable diagnoses. Treating them as the same can lead either to unnecessary isolation or to exposing dogs and people to a genuinely contagious disease.

Assuming every mange case is harmless
Noncontagious does not mean minor. Generalized demodicosis can be serious, and secondary infection can make a puppy significantly ill. The puppy needs veterinary care even when other dogs can safely be nearby.
Buying a product before identifying the mite
Preventive products, shampoos and dips are not interchangeable, and an inappropriate product can delay proper care or irritate damaged skin. Use only a product and dose selected or approved by the veterinarian for that puppy.
Ignoring a change in the diagnosis
If the puppy develops intense itching, new household members become itchy, or another dog develops skin lesions, call the veterinarian. Those signs may indicate sarcoptic mange, another contagious problem or a separate condition requiring a new assessment.

Bottom line for a multi-dog home
A puppy with veterinarian-confirmed demodectic mange can generally remain with other dogs. The mites normally found on dogs are not considered to spread through ordinary contact, and maternal transfer shortly after birth is the recognized transmission event. The practical priorities are confirming the mite type, treating the puppy’s disease, watching for secondary infection and following the clinic’s advice about daycare or boarding. If the diagnosis is uncertain, pause close contact until sarcoptic mange and other contagious conditions have been addressed.
