For introductions, move gradually, give the rabbit a secure place to retreat, and end contact calmly if the kitten stalks, chases, swats, or bites. Redirect the kitten’s play to a toy away from the rabbit; if predatory interest continues, maintain separation.
Why kitten play can still be dangerous for a rabbit
Kittens commonly play by swatting, chasing, pouncing, and catching. The AAHA/AAFP kitten behavior guidelines describe these as part of play and recommend toys that engage a kitten’s prey-like play. But playful intent does not make the interaction safe: those movements resemble hunting behavior and can frighten or injure a rabbit.
You cannot reliably judge safety from whether the kitten seems playful, or from one calm meeting. The practical rule is to respond to what the kitten does: stalking, chasing, swatting, or biting means the interaction stops.
How to introduce a kitten and rabbit safely
There is no guaranteed introduction sequence that suits every pair. Start with separate secure spaces, then consider gradual exposure such as adjacent enclosures or carefully managed contact in neutral territory. Choose steps that let you supervise while keeping the animals safe and uncornered.

- Set up separate spaces. Use a secure barrier or enclosure so the kitten cannot reach the rabbit when you are not supervising.
- Allow controlled exposure. If both animals remain settled, you can try brief, closely supervised exposure through adjacent enclosures or in neutral territory. Do not force them close together.
- Protect the rabbit’s escape route. Provide a secure hiding place and room to move away. Do not let the kitten block the entrance or corner the rabbit.
- Watch the kitten throughout. At the first stalking, chase, swat, or bite, calmly end the interaction and separate them. Do not allow the rabbit to become the kitten’s play target.
- Use short, calm sessions. End while both animals are settled rather than waiting for the kitten to escalate. Increase exposure only when the setup remains controlled.
The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund advises owners to be ready to interrupt if a cat shows predatory behavior. Its guidance also calls for continued supervision when rabbits live with young animals of other species; familiarity is not a reason to leave them together unattended.
How to stop chasing and redirect the kitten
When the kitten starts fixating on the rabbit, calmly separate them rather than turning the chase into a game. Give the kitten an appropriate outlet away from the rabbit, such as an interactive wand toy that encourages chasing and pouncing. The toy redirects play; it does not make shared access safe or replace supervision.

If stalking or chasing keeps returning, stop contact and maintain physical separation. A cat with persistent predatory interest may need to remain separated from the rabbit.
Choose a setup that keeps both animals safe
Judge any barrier, pen, or rabbit hideout by how it works in your home—not by its label. The setup should prevent the kitten from reaching the rabbit when you are away, let the rabbit hide and move away, and allow you to supervise without cornering either animal.

- Check that the kitten cannot get through, over, or around the barrier to reach the rabbit.
- Make sure the rabbit can enter its hideout and withdraw without the kitten blocking the way.
- Keep the rabbit’s food, water, and resting area within its secure space.
- Do not rely on a toy, a brief calm encounter, or a barrier that only works while you are watching.
What to do if the kitten scratches or bites the rabbit
Contact a veterinarian promptly if the rabbit has a scratch or bite, appears painful or injured, or seems unwell. House Rabbit Society warns that even a playful swat or bite can lead to a serious abscess. UC Davis advises veterinary contact for behavior changes, pain reactions, or other medical symptoms. Do not assume a small-looking wound is harmless.
