The University of Melbourne and Colossal Biosciences have reported research toward making a thylacine-like animal, but the available institutional updates through August 2025 do not report a live thylacine or confirm an imminent birth. The scientifically careful description is an attempt to create a proxy—not to restore the original species exactly.
What scientists mean by “bringing back” the thylacine
The project’s described approach is to use the thylacine’s reconstructed genome to identify genetic differences from living marsupials, then investigate whether selected changes could be made in a living relative. The University of Melbourne’s Pask Lab says researchers are using the fat-tailed dunnart as a model to develop techniques relevant to later stages.
That is different from recovering the extinct animal itself. The IUCN Species Survival Commission’s 2016 guidance warns that “de-extinction” can imply a faithful restoration that current approaches cannot deliver. It recommends thinking in terms of a proxy: an animal intended to represent some traits or ecological functions of an extinct species.
What the project has reported—and what remains distinct
In October 2024, the University of Melbourne announced a reconstructed thylacine genome that it estimated to be more than 99.9 per cent accurate. That figure describes the project’s estimate for the genome reconstruction; it is not a measure of how much of a thylacine has been recreated, the probability of success, or proof that the remaining biological challenges are solved.

| Milestone | What the cited updates establish |
|---|---|
| Genome reconstruction | The University of Melbourne reported its more-than-99.9-per-cent accuracy estimate in October 2024. |
| Identifying and editing differences | The Pask Lab describes comparing thylacine and living marsupial genomes to find differences that may need editing into a living relative. It does not describe this as a completed thylacine genome edit. |
| Reproductive methods | The Pask Lab says the fat-tailed dunnart model is being used to develop relevant techniques. Later steps are described as in development. |
| Live birth, health and persistence | The cited institutional updates do not report a live animal or establish that a proxy has been born, is healthy, or could persist outside a research setting. |
These are separate hurdles, not interchangeable ways of saying an animal has been “brought back.” A genome assembly does not by itself demonstrate successful cell engineering, embryo development, gestation, live birth, health or long-term survival.
Is a thylacine really about to be born?
The headline’s “about to” language is not supported by a verified birth date in the cited institutional updates. In August 2025, the University of Melbourne reported that Professor Andrew Pask had become Colossal’s Chief Biology Officer and that Australian Colossal-affiliated activities, including thylacine work, would be consolidated into Colossal Australia. That is an organizational update, not a birth milestone.

- Tasmanian Devil Details: Features a stocky build, short legs, sharp teeth, and powerful jaws, capturing the distinctive body shape and facial features associated with this marsupial.
- Dimensions: Measures 3.5 inches long x 2 inches tall. Suitable for animal play, classroom projects, dioramas, themed scenes, and display.
- Imaginative Wildlife Play: Create screen-free animal stories, pretend encounters, exploration adventures, and small-world scenes centered on this distinctive Tasmanian species.
- Classroom And Conservation: Use the figure for wildlife lessons, marsupial discussions, animal identification, Montessori activities, school projects, and conservation-themed learning.
- Safety And Material: Safety Tested and made from BPA Free PVC, this standard Safari Ltd. animal figure is designed for kids ages 3+ in a single-figure toy format.
Any projected timetable should therefore be treated as a forecast attributed to whoever made it, not as a confirmed schedule. The updates cited here establish research activity and project milestones, not an imminent birth.
What a thylacine-like proxy could—and could not—mean
A proxy might share selected genetic or physical traits with the thylacine, but that would not establish identity with the extinct animal. The IUCN guidance notes that a proxy cannot be assumed to reproduce an extinct species in its full genetic, behavioral and physiological entirety. The project description also leaves open which traits could be reconstructed and which could not.

Professor Andrew Pask, in the University of Melbourne’s October 2024 announcement, said: “Not only are these major milestones for the thylacine de-extinction project, but the advancements by Colossal in partnership with the University of Melbourne for improving assisted reproductive technologies in marsupials can be applied across the marsupial family tree.” That statement describes possible wider relevance of reproductive technology; it is not evidence that a thylacine has been created.

Producing a proxy would not, on its own, show that releasing it would help ecosystems or be safe. The IUCN’s 2016 guidance points to questions that would need careful assessment:
Rank #4
- Let your child growl with excitement with this tiger stuffed animal that gives them a soft, loving hug, as they roam the jungle together
- Huggers are cute plush toys and versatile slap bracelets that you can wrap around your wrist and other objects such as backpacks, bikes and strollers, When arms are fully extended, the width is 12"
- One just isn’t enough, collect all the Hugger stuffed animals, bringing smiles wherever they go
- Huggers conform to your wrist, so one size fits all, and these unique plush toys for kids are approximately 8 inches in size
- Huggers make great gifts for kids of all ages, and even adults love to hang these plushies around their lamps and anything it can grip
- Ecological purpose: What function is the animal expected to serve, and could living species provide that function?
- Habitat and impacts: Is suitable habitat available, and what risks could the proxy pose to existing species or face from disease?
- Animal welfare: Can the animals be created, raised and managed without unacceptable suffering?
- Governance and consent: Have relevant communities, particularly Indigenous peoples, been meaningfully engaged, and are success criteria and monitoring transparent?
The guidance supplies general conservation principles, not a project-specific assessment or evidence that these questions have been resolved for the thylacine effort.
