Two trained dogs distinguished breath samples collected during trauma-cue distress from calmer samples in a small proof-of-concept study. That suggests dogs can detect some stress-related changes in breath odour; it does not show that dogs can diagnose PTSD or identify a unique PTSD scent.
What did the 2024 study find?
In a study published in Frontiers in Allergy on March 28, 2024, Kiiroja, Stewart and Gadbois tested whether trained dogs could distinguish breath collected during distress from breath collected in a calmer state. The distress condition involved participants’ personalized trauma cues. Of the 26 participants, 54% met diagnostic requirements for PTSD; the group also completed 40 experimental sessions. Read the study in Frontiers in Allergy.
The researchers used two scent-detection dogs and two different tasks. In the paired discrimination task, the dogs reached approximately 90% accuracy across sample sets. In a separate task presenting samples individually, one dog’s reported accuracy was 74% and the other’s was 81%. These percentages describe performance on different experimental tasks, not the accuracy of a clinical test.
What the dogs were detecting—and what they were not
The finding is about odour differences associated with distress during trauma-cue exposure. The authors interpret it as evidence that dogs may detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) associated with that state. They do not report a disease-specific PTSD VOC profile, and the possible endocrine explanations for which signals dogs responded to remain speculative.

That distinction matters: PTSD is a clinical diagnosis, while the experiment tested whether dogs could sort collected samples by the state in which they were produced. The study does not show that a dog can diagnose PTSD, detect trauma from anyone’s breath, or reliably predict a flashback in everyday life.
How strong is the evidence?
This was a controlled proof-of-concept experiment involving two dogs and a small participant group. The dogs worked with collected samples rather than assessing people in ordinary settings. The reported percentages are experimental task results, not population estimates or real-world diagnostic accuracy. The authors also note that scent-detection training selects a small subset of dogs.

A related 2022 PLOS ONE study offers context about stress odour, not PTSD diagnosis. Four dogs discriminated combined breath-and-sweat samples from 36 people after an experimentally induced psychological stress task. Across 720 trials, the study reported 93.75% combined accuracy in distinguishing stress samples from baseline samples. Read the 2022 study in PLOS ONE. Like the later work, it tested stress-related odour differences under experimental conditions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could this help PTSD service dogs?
Possibly, but that remains a research prospect rather than a validated service. PTSD service dogs already assist people during episodes of distress, as Laura Kiiroja, first author of the 2024 paper, noted in a Frontiers research news item. Read the Frontiers news item. The paper discusses alerting or interrupting distress as a possible service-dog context, but it does not establish that breath-based detection is ready for practical use.
