There’s no evidence-based yes-or-no answer for tropical fish as a group. Banana ingredients have been studied in formulated feed for particular food-fish species, but that does not show that fresh banana is safe or beneficial for an unspecified aquarium fish. Feed your fish a complete diet suited to its species, and don’t replace that diet with banana.
Why the answer depends on the fish
“Tropical fish” describes many aquarium species with different natural diets and nutritional needs. A foundational review by R. P. Yanong emphasizes that ornamental fish nutrition should be approached species by species, using anatomy and natural history as starting points: University of Florida: Nutrition of Fish. The review dates to 1999, so it is useful for this general principle, not as current product guidance.

Without knowing the fish species, its life stage, and its usual diet, there is no sound basis for recommending banana. The available sources also do not establish a portion, feeding frequency, or preparation method for fresh banana in a home aquarium.
What banana-feeding studies actually tested
The banana-related studies located tested processed banana ingredients mixed into formulated aquaculture feed. They did not test fresh banana chunks offered to ornamental fish in household aquariums.

| Study | What was tested | Reported result | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rohu, Giri, Jun, and Sukumaran (2016) Study record | Banana peel flour at 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% of formulated diets, fed for 60 days. | The 5% banana-peel-flour group had higher final weight gain and specific growth rate than the basal-diet group. | A recommended banana portion or feeding schedule for an aquarium fish. |
| Nile tilapia fingerlings, reported by Global Aquaculture Advocate (study originally published in 2003) Report on the study | Green banana meal included in formulated feed and tested over 42 days. | Growth at 100 or 200 grams of meal per kilogram of feed was similar to the control; higher inclusion levels performed worse. The report notes possible antinutritional factors. | A household serving size, or evidence that fresh banana is suitable for unrelated ornamental species. |
These findings apply to the species, processed ingredient, and experimental diets studied. They cannot be converted into a fresh-fruit recommendation for a different fish.
What to feed instead
Choose a complete diet made for your fish’s species and life stage, and follow its feeding directions. A commercial product should not be assumed suitable just because it is marketed as “tropical fish food”; check that its label matches the fish you keep. A North Carolina State veterinary-school paper discusses commercial complete diets targeted at koi and goldfish, but that koi-specific material does not verify a particular food for tropical aquarium fish: NC State paper on commercial koi and goldfish diets.
