How to Hatch Fish Eggs at Home: A Species-Specific Guide

Fish eggs and brine shrimp cysts are not the same. Identify which you have, then use the right species-specific or hatchery instructions.

First, which do you mean: eggs laid by your aquarium fish, or brine shrimp eggs to feed the fry? They are different organisms and need different hatching conditions. For fish embryos, identify the species before changing water conditions or moving eggs; there is no safe, universal home recipe for temperature, water movement or hatch time.

Identify what you are trying to hatch

Fish embryos develop inside eggs laid by a fish. Brine shrimp “eggs” are dormant Artemia cysts that hatch into tiny live food called nauplii; they do not become fish. The distinction determines the water, equipment and goal.

What you have What hatches What to do
Eggs laid by an aquarium fish Fry of that fish species Identify the species and egg type, then follow species-specific incubation guidance.
Brine shrimp cysts Artemia nauplii for feeding fry Use a brine shrimp hatchery or another setup that follows the cyst maker’s or hatchery’s instructions.

For fish eggs, note the species and whether eggs are attached to a surface, placed in a nest, or loose. Those details help determine whether eggs need special circulation and whether they are likely to be vulnerable to handling.

How to incubate aquarium fish eggs

Find the species-specific requirements first

Do not choose a temperature, salinity, water-change schedule or expected hatch time based on a general fish-egg recipe. UF/IFAS identifies temperature, water quality, aeration or agitation, light, water flow, avoiding shock, and egg type and size as factors in fish incubation: UF/IFAS fish-incubation guidance. Their importance and appropriate settings depend on the species and how its eggs develop.

BaoZqua Medaka Spawning Mop Kit, 10 Floating Egg Collectors with Hatch Box
  • Floating Spawning Mops For Medaka: Give your Japanese ricefish a natural place to lay eggs. Each mop floats upright at the surface where medaka prefer to spawn, and the dense green fibers mimic the plants females use in the wild — so they attach their sticky fish eggs to the strips instead of losing them across the tank.
  • Keep Eggs Safe From Hungry Adults: Scattered eggs are easy to lose and adult fish often eat them. With a spawning mop, eggs collect in one visible spot on the green fibers, easy to see and simple to move — then hatch them apart from the adults in the included container so far more fry survive to swimming size.
  • Everything For Egg-To-Fry Care: This complete breeding kit brings 10 floating egg collector mops, a clear hatching and storage container, 2 fine mesh fry nets, 3 transfer droppers, and rounded-tip egg tweezers. Collect eggs, hatch them, spot-feed and relocate baby fish — the whole workflow is covered from spawn to fry.
  • Hatch And Watch Them Grow: Fill the open-top container to the shallow water line marked on the side to keep eggs well oxygenated, and keep the lid off during hatching. The clear walls let you watch each medaka egg develop and fry emerge — a rewarding view for hobbyists and a hands-on project for classrooms and kids.
  • For Killifish, Koi Ponds & More: Beyond medaka, these breeding mops for aquarium and pond use also suit killifish, goldfish, koi, danios, and rainbowfish that spawn on plants. Rinse and reuse each season, then store the full kit in its own box — a lasting setup for any fish spawning tank or outdoor tub.

Look for breeding guidance for the exact fish before making changes. A thermometer can help you monitor water temperature, but the target must come from species-specific instructions. If you cannot identify the fish or find reliable directions for its eggs, ask an experienced aquarist, aquarium professional or aquatic veterinarian rather than guessing at incubation settings.

Do not move eggs by default

Whether eggs should remain with the parents or be moved depends on the species and circumstances. There is no general rule that applies to all aquarium fish. Check species-specific breeding instructions before disturbing eggs; moving them can expose them to handling or a change in water conditions.

Match water movement to the egg type

Aeration, agitation and flow can matter, but that does not mean every clutch should receive vigorous bubbling. Follow the species-specific method for the egg type. An aquarium air pump and airline tubing may be useful when the recommended setup calls for aeration; place airflow according to those instructions rather than directing strong bubbles at eggs by default.

Observe conditions without adding unverified treatments

Monitor the conditions specified for the species, particularly temperature and water quality, and avoid abrupt changes that could shock developing eggs. The guidance cited here does not establish a home antifungal treatment or chemical dose, so do not add one based on a generic recipe.

Allow for species-specific timing

Hatch time varies. For one defined example, University of Missouri Extension reports that bluegill eggs hatch in about 32–48 hours depending on water temperature; that timing applies to bluegill, not aquarium fish generally: University of Missouri Extension’s bluegill guidance. Use the timing given for your species instead of treating this example as a countdown for other fish.

Plan for fry after the eggs hatch

Hatching is only the start: newly hatched fish need food appropriate to their size and developmental stage. Find feeding guidance for the species before the eggs hatch. Do not assume that brine shrimp nauplii are suitable for every fry or that the same feeding schedule applies across species. Missouri Extension’s notes on feeding bluegill, including hatched Artemia, are specific to its bluegill production context, not a universal aquarium schedule: University of Missouri Extension’s bluegill guidance.

If you mean brine shrimp eggs for fish food

Brine shrimp hatching is a separate process for producing live food, not a way to hatch aquarium fish. UF/IFAS discusses Artemia cyst decapsulation and hatching, including a steep-sided container and aeration from the bottom. Its publication states that decapsulated cysts hatch in 24–48 hours under the described process; that figure is for brine shrimp, not fish embryos. The publication was released February 2, 2021, and reviewed August 1, 2024: UF/IFAS guidance on brine shrimp.

For ordinary cysts, follow the instructions supplied with the cysts or the chosen hatchery. One retailer’s recipe offers an example setup using salt, temperature, aeration and collection steps, but it is that retailer’s method rather than a universal standard: Aquarium Co-Op’s brine shrimp hatching method. A brine shrimp hatchery and Artemia cysts belong in this live-food setup, not among instructions for incubating fish embryos.

Why professional fish-egg methods are not home recipes

Incubation protocols can be highly species-specific. For example, a USGS manual describes a controlled culture system for cisco and bloater using chilled water and incubation jars, along with a formalin protocol for those species: USGS fish-culture manual. This specialized protocol is not a general aquarium method, and its formalin use should not be adapted as a home treatment for other fish eggs.
