Yes—Amtrak allows cats on most trains. Your cat must have its own pet reservation, remain in a compliant carrier for the entire station and train journey, and meet Amtrak’s limits for age, size, weight, trip length, route, and travel class. Pet spaces are limited, and the fee is calculated for your specific itinerary, so check the exact train before buying a ticket.
Amtrak cat rules at a glance
Amtrak’s current policy applies to small dogs and cats traveling as pets. The official wording is: “Small dogs and cats are permitted to travel as pets on most trains.” That does not mean every route, train, class, or accommodation accepts pets.

How to book a cat on Amtrak
- Check the complete itinerary first. Identify every train, connection and travel class. A route that looks short on a map can exceed the pet time limit once a transfer is included.
- Confirm the train accepts pets. Amtrak describes pet travel as available on most routes, not all routes. The booking process may show that no pet space is available even when people can still buy passenger tickets.
- Select an eligible class. Coach and Acela Business Class are the standard choices. If the itinerary includes a private room, a non-Acela Business Class car, or a restricted Quiet Car, change the class or train before paying.
- Add the pet reservation for the same date. Only one pet is allowed per customer, and the reservation is valid only for the travel date printed on it. A reservation for one date does not carry over if you change the trip.
- Review the quoted fee. Amtrak charges per travel segment, and the amount varies by route. The reservation price summary displays the applicable fee; there is no single nationwide price to use for planning.
- Save both confirmations. Keep the passenger ticket and pet confirmation together. At check-in, make sure the pet reservation matches the train, date and passenger name.
Which routes and services do not accept cats?
Several named services are excluded from Amtrak’s pet program: Auto Train, Gold Runner and Amtrak Connection services. Pet travel in Canada is unavailable on the Adirondack, Maple Leaf and Amtrak Cascades. Other trains can also have restrictions, which is why the exact train number and date matter more than the general route name.

If a journey uses multiple trains, treat each segment as a separate eligibility check. A connection can fail because one segment has no pet capacity, because the class changes, or because the combined elapsed time is too long. Do not buy a passenger ticket assuming a pet can be added later.
Carrier requirements: dimensions, weight and fit
Amtrak does not endorse a particular carrier brand or model. Shop by the policy specifications instead. The maximum outside size is 19 inches long, 14 inches wide and 10.5 inches high, and the loaded cat-and-carrier combination must stay at or below 20 pounds.

Before travel, let your cat enter the carrier voluntarily and take short practice rides. Use a washable absorbent liner, pack a spare liner and bring waste bags. Ask your veterinarian about feeding, medication and motion-sickness concerns rather than giving a sedative without professional guidance.

Where your cat may sit—and where it cannot go
The carrier must remain closed and fully under your seat for the journey. You cannot release the cat to stretch in the aisle, station, lounge or restroom. On Amtrak Cascades, the policy allows the carrier on the floor in front of the seat next to you; otherwise, use the space under your own seat.
Pets are accepted in Coach and Acela Business Class. They are not accepted in Acela First Class, First Class private rooms, non-Acela Business Class, food-service cars, station lounges or First Class waiting areas. On Keystone and Pennsylvanian trains, pets cannot use the Quiet Car. If you are asking, “Can cats ride in a sleeper car?”, do not assume a private room is eligible: First Class private rooms are specifically excluded, and the reservation system must show a pet option for the exact accommodation.
Preparing your cat for a safer trip
Before leaving home
- Confirm that vaccinations are current and carry the records your veterinarian recommends.
- Place an identification tag on the carrier and keep your phone number with the travel documents.
- Feed normally but avoid an unusually large meal immediately before boarding; follow your veterinarian’s advice for cats with medical conditions.
- Pack water, a small familiar blanket, cleaning supplies, spare liners and any prescribed medication in your personal bag.
- Plan extra time at the station so you are not rushing while carrying the cat and luggage.
At the station and onboard
- Keep the carrier closed and under control from the moment you enter the station until you leave the destination station.
- Do not place the carrier on another seat, in an aisle, on a luggage rack or under the seat in front of you.
- Watch for heat, cold, loud noise and crowding while waiting. Move to a permitted, quieter area without entering a lounge or waiting area that excludes pets.
- Keep the cat’s environment calm and avoid opening the carrier to soothe it. If the cat becomes distressed, ask onboard staff what assistance is available while maintaining containment.
Amtrak requires the cat to be odorless, harmless and non-disruptive, and not to require attention during travel. You certify that vaccinations are current and sign a Pet Release and Indemnification Agreement for every travel segment. Amtrak states that it does not accept responsibility for the pet’s health and well-being, so decide with your veterinarian whether rail travel is appropriate for your individual cat.

Emotional-support cats and service animals are different
An emotional-support cat is treated as a pet under Amtrak’s rules. Amtrak states: “An emotional support animal is not a service animal under DOT regulations and is subject to the same requirements as a pet.” That means the cat needs the pet reservation, carrier, fee and route eligibility described above.

Common booking problems and fixes
The pet option is missing
The train may be excluded, pet capacity may be full, the class may be ineligible, or the itinerary may exceed the time limit. Try another departure or eligible class and recheck every segment.
The trip changed after booking
A pet reservation is tied to the travel date shown on the ticket. Contact Amtrak or use the available change process to rebook the pet; do not assume the original pet reservation follows automatically.

Re-measure the outside dimensions, weigh the loaded carrier and check the cat’s ability to sit and lie down without touching the sides. Airline approval is not evidence of Amtrak compliance.

You need a longer journey
Because transfer time counts, splitting the trip across separate travel dates may be necessary, but each date and segment would need its own eligible reservation. If no compliant itinerary exists, ask your veterinarian about safer alternatives for your cat.
Final checklist before you leave
- Pet reservation confirmed for the exact date and every required segment.
- Train and class checked against Amtrak’s current restrictions.
- Carrier measured, leak-tested, ventilated and weighed with the cat inside.
- Cat can sit and lie down comfortably while fully enclosed.
- Vaccination information, agreement details and emergency contact information ready.
- Water, liner, cleaning supplies, medication and identification packed.
- Plan for keeping the carrier closed and under the correct seat throughout the trip.
