Sometimes—but not automatically. Airbnb does not guarantee that ordinary pet cats are accepted at every home. The listing’s House rules control, and a pet-friendly search result is only a starting point. Before booking, tell the host about your specific cat, ask about restrictions, and review the final price for any pet fee. Service animals and emotional support animals follow different rules, and local law can change the result.
This guide reflects Airbnb Help Center guidance available on October 13, 2026. Policies, app labels, fees, and local legal requirements can change, so check the current rules for your destination before you pay.

The short answer: Airbnb allows cats only when the listing and host do
Airbnb treats an ordinary housecat as a domesticated pet. That means the host’s pet policy—not a platform-wide “cats allowed” guarantee—determines whether your cat may stay. A listing may welcome pets generally but still impose conditions, such as keeping animals off beds and sofas, restricting access to shared rooms, or limiting the number or type of pets.

Use Airbnb’s pet-allowed filter to find possible matches, then open each listing’s House rules. Contact the host before booking and describe the cat you plan to bring. Ask whether that particular animal is acceptable, whether resident pets are present, and what areas or furniture are off limits. Airbnb’s guest guidance specifically recommends confirming acceptance and restrictions even when a listing says pets are allowed.

Three different cases: pet cat, service animal, and emotional support animal
Airbnb separates ordinary pets from assistance animals. The distinction affects whether a host may refuse the animal, whether fees can be charged, and whether location-specific law applies.
| Animal category | Does the ordinary pet rule control? | Can the host refuse? | Can a pet or cleaning fee apply? | Location-specific legal effect |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary pet cat | Yes. The listing’s House rules and the host’s confirmation govern. | Yes. A host may decline a cat or set reasonable property rules. | Yes. A host may set a pet fee for a home listing; the fee may be per booking, night, pet, or pet per night. Airbnb says it cannot exceed the nightly base rate. | Local law may impose additional animal, housing, or disclosure requirements. |
| Service animal | Generally no. Airbnb treats a service animal as distinct from a pet. | Generally no, even where pets are prohibited, unless a limited Airbnb policy exception or granted exemption applies. | No animal-related fee for a service animal. | Airbnb’s Accessibility Policy applies, alongside any stronger local protections. |
| Emotional support animal | Often yes, unless Airbnb policy or applicable law requires accommodation. | May be able to refuse or apply ordinary pet rules where no accommodation is required. | Ordinary pet fees may apply where permitted. | Requirements vary by destination and offering. Airbnb identifies rules for places including California and New York home reservations and Ontario and Quebec for certain reservation types. |
These categories are not interchangeable. A pet cat does not become a service animal merely because it provides comfort, and an emotional support animal is not treated identically in every jurisdiction.

1. Start with the pet-allowed search filter
Enter the destination and dates, then apply Airbnb’s filter for places that allow pets. Filtering reduces the number of listings you need to inspect, but it is not final approval. A host may have restrictions that the filter does not show, and the listing may not distinguish cats from dogs.
2. Read the complete House rules
Open the listing details and locate House rules. Look for the pet policy, limits on the number of animals, furniture restrictions, rules for shared spaces, and any requirement to disclose an animal in advance. Also check whether the accommodation is a private room, shared home, or entire place; a cat may affect other guests or resident animals differently in each setting.
3. Message the host with specific information
Give the cat’s number, approximate size, age, and relevant behavior information. State whether the cat is indoor-only, litter-trained, quiet, or likely to be left alone. Ask these questions in one message:

- Is this specific cat accepted for these dates?
- Are cats allowed on beds, sofas, or other furniture?
- Are any rooms, balconies, yards, or shared areas off limits?
- Do you or another guest have resident pets?
- Are there building, condominium, or local rules about cats?
- Will a pet fee be added, and how will it appear in the price?
- Are there instructions for litter disposal, scratching, or cleaning?
Keep the host’s reply in the Airbnb message thread. A general statement such as “pets are okay” is less useful than confirmation that your cat is accepted under stated conditions.
4. Check the price before paying
Review the complete price breakdown at checkout. For home listings, Airbnb allows hosts to set a pet fee to cover expected cleaning. Depending on the host’s setup, it can be charged per booking, per night, per pet, or per pet per night. Airbnb’s host guidance says the pet fee cannot exceed the nightly base rate. Do not assume the fee is waived because the listing is pet-friendly.
5. Reconfirm if anything changes
If you change the animal, dates, guest count, or accommodation after the host’s approval, ask again in writing. Permission for one cat does not necessarily cover a second animal or a different property in the same building.
What ordinary cat rules can cover
Hosts may use house rules to protect furnishings, other guests, and resident animals. Common examples include keeping cats off beds and sofas, limiting access to a nursery or owner’s bedroom, requiring doors and windows to remain closed, and requiring the animal to stay inside a carrier in shared corridors. Airbnb specifically gives furniture restrictions as an example of a condition a host may set.
Ask about resident animals before booking. A host’s dog, another cat, or a wildlife-sensitive property can create risks that are not obvious from photographs. Hosts should disclose pets living at the listing, but you should still ask directly if the information is unclear.
Discuss alone time. Airbnb’s explicit requirement that an animal not be left alone without prior approval applies to service animals; it does not create a universal rule for ordinary cats. For a pet cat, ask the host whether leaving the animal unattended is allowed and for how long. Follow any agreed instruction, including use of a carrier or a designated room.

- Hard sided pet carrier with 2 doors for front and top entry; suitable for cat or medium size dog weighing 12 - 20 pounds
- Durable plastic construction with steel wire doors; screws keep the top and bottom sections securely connected
- Spring load latches ensure easy one-handed door opening and closing; top door swings open to the left or right and includes a top carry handle
- Plenty of air ventilation on the sides, top, and back of the carrier
- Note: Be sure to measure the size of the pet when choosing carrier size
Pet fees, cleaning charges, and the price breakdown
An ordinary pet fee is separate from the nightly base rate and is intended to cover expected cleaning for a home listing. Airbnb’s stated fee structures include:
- one charge per booking;
- a charge for each night;
- a charge for each pet; or
- a charge for each pet per night.
The host’s pet fee cannot exceed the nightly base rate under Airbnb’s host guidance. The rule does not mean every host must charge a fee or that all listings use the same structure. Inspect the checkout breakdown instead of estimating from the nightly headline price.
Do not agree to an undisclosed cash payment or assume a cleaning fee covers damage. Ask the host how an approved fee will be shown in the reservation. Keep the cat’s litter, food, and waste contained so that ordinary cleaning expectations are met; a fee is not permission to ignore house rules.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Service animals: why a service dog is treated differently
Airbnb generally defines a service animal as a dog individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability. Airbnb says a service animal is not a pet and may generally accompany a guest on a home, service, or experience reservation even when pets are prohibited.
For home stays, hosts generally may not refuse a reservation or charge a fee because of the service animal, subject to limited policy exceptions or an Airbnb-granted exemption. The animal must be under control, housebroken, and kept out of areas the host has legitimately designated as off limits. Airbnb says a service animal should not be left alone without the host’s prior approval.
Questions a host may and may not ask
Airbnb’s policy allows a host to ask whether the animal is required because of a disability and what work or task the dog has been trained to perform. The host may not ask you to describe the disability, demand documentation, or require a demonstration of the task.

These service-animal rules do not automatically apply to an ordinary pet cat. If your animal is a cat, review the applicable definition and current Accessibility Policy carefully rather than assuming that a no-pets rule is overridden.

Emotional support animals: the result depends on place and reservation type
Airbnb describes emotional support animals as animals that provide emotional support or assistance and notes that they are generally household animals, including cats. Unless Airbnb policy or applicable law requires accommodation, a host may apply ordinary pet rules and fees or decline a reservation at a no-pets listing.
Airbnb identifies accommodation requirements for particular jurisdictions, including California and New York for home reservations and Ontario and Quebec for certain reservation types. The relevant rule can depend on the destination and whether the booking is a home, service, or experience. Local law may add protections or obligations that are not summarized in a listing.
If your cat is an emotional support animal, check the current Airbnb Accessibility Policy for the destination and offering, then ask the host through Airbnb before booking. Do not present an emotional support cat as a service animal or rely on a certificate without checking the rule that actually applies.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety and “dangerous animal” concerns
Airbnb’s animal policy requires guests to obtain the host’s consent before check-in when bringing a dangerous animal. Ordinary housecats are not classified as dangerous animals as a category. However, an individual cat’s behavior, bite history, legal classification, or restrictions imposed by local authorities can matter.
Tell the host about any behavior that could affect people or property, such as aggression, escape attempts, spraying, or difficulty around other animals. A clear disclosure gives the host a chance to decide whether the home is suitable and lets you agree on precautions before arrival.

What to pack after permission is confirmed
Permission comes first; equipment does not substitute for it. For a cat that the host has accepted, practical supplies can include a secure carrier, familiar food, medications, a portable litter setup, waste bags, a scoop, a scratching pad, and a washable mat. Bring items that reduce odor and protect floors rather than expecting the host to provide them.
Keep the cat’s identification and emergency contact information with you. If the property has balconies, screens, exterior doors, or unfamiliar escape routes, ask the host how those features should be managed before releasing the cat from its carrier.
If a host says no or the rules are unclear
The listing appears pet-friendly but the host declines
Do not arrive with the cat anyway. Ask whether the restriction is about cats specifically, the number of animals, dates, resident pets, or a building rule. If the host cannot accommodate the animal, search for another listing whose House rules and written confirmation match your needs.
The listing has no pet information
Treat missing information as “not confirmed,” not as permission. Message the host and wait for an explicit answer. If you cannot get a clear response before booking, choose a listing with a stated policy.
The host changes the conditions after you ask
Save the written conversation and compare it with the reservation details. Ask the host to restate the final conditions in the Airbnb thread, including any fee and furniture or room restrictions. If the terms no longer work for you, contact Airbnb support through the reservation before check-in rather than arriving and hoping the issue is resolved on site.
You are traveling with an assistance animal
Use Airbnb’s Accessibility Policy and the law applicable to the destination, not the ordinary pet filter alone. Explain the animal’s status accurately, disclose only information the policy permits the host to request, and seek clarification before booking if the destination has special rules.
Arrival and stay checklist
- Re-read the approved pet conditions in your message thread.
- Confirm where the litter box, food, and carrier may be placed.
- Check doors, windows, screens, balconies, and other escape points.
- Keep the cat out of every area the host identified as off limits.
- Prevent scratching, spraying, and access to prohibited furniture.
- Dispose of litter and waste according to the host’s instructions.
- Tell the host promptly about damage, illness, escape, or a conflict with another animal.
Policy freshness and local-law limits
Airbnb’s app labels, fee tools, Accessibility Policy, and animal rules can change. The guidance summarized here was available on October 13, 2026; it does not resolve every destination’s legal requirement. A city, province, state, building, or landlord rule may impose additional limits, and those rules can differ from Airbnb’s platform policy.
