Keep pets away from compost and stored fertilizer. If your pet may have swallowed either, contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly and have the product packaging or ingredient list ready.
Why compost and fertilizer can be dangerous
Compost can contain toxic food waste and mold
Compost may include discarded foods that are hazardous to pets, including garlic, onion, and grape products. Mold growing in compost can also produce tremorgenic mycotoxins—poisons that may cause neurologic signs. A pile that looks like ordinary garden waste is not necessarily safe to investigate or eat.
Possible signs after compost ingestion include vomiting, agitation, panting, drooling, poor coordination, tremors, and seizures. Pet Poison Helpline says symptoms may begin within 30 minutes to several hours, but timing and severity can vary. These are potential clinical signs, not a checklist to wait for before seeking help.
Fertilizer ingredients and amount matter
Fertilizers are mixtures, not a single substance. They commonly contain plant nutrients and may also contain trace minerals or additives such as herbicides, pesticides, or fungicides. Some cause gastrointestinal irritation; larger ingestions or particular ingredients can result in more serious illness. ASPCA lists severe vomiting, diarrhea, hindlimb weakness, pain, uncoordinated walking, and tremors among possible effects.

Meal-based fertilizers deserve particular caution: a large ingestion may form a mass in the stomach, with possible obstruction or pancreatitis. A label that says “organic” or “natural” does not by itself establish that a product is safe for pets; the ingredients and amount consumed still matter.
How to keep pets out of compost and fertilizer
- Block access to compost. Use a fence or barrier that your pet cannot get around, under, or through, or use a closed compost bin. Choose a setup that can be secured against your pet’s behavior.
- Store fertilizer securely. Keep products in their original packaging and out of pets’ reach, and follow the label’s storage directions.
- Keep the ingredient information accessible. If an exposure happens, the package or a clear photo of its label can help a veterinarian or poison-control service assess the specific product.
- Consider nearby garden materials. Cocoa-bean-hull mulch is a separate garden hazard: ASPCA warns that ingestion can cause chocolate-like gastrointestinal, cardiac, and neurologic effects.
What to do if your pet may have eaten compost or fertilizer
- Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-control service promptly. Do not wait for symptoms to appear or try a home remedy before getting professional advice.
- Gather the details. Have the product container or ingredient list available. If compost was involved, describe what food waste or other material may have been in it, when the exposure may have happened, and what signs you have noticed.
- Follow professional instructions. Treatment depends on the substance and exposure. Do not attempt to induce vomiting or perform veterinary decontamination at home unless a veterinary professional specifically instructs you to do so.
ASPCA Poison Control’s article, “Can You Dig It? Compost and Fertilizer Pet Safety Tips!” (July 18, 2022), advises: “If you suspect that your pet ingested something potentially toxic, please call your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 immediately.” Contact details can change, so verify the number when you call.
