A cat bite can become infected even when it leaves only a tiny puncture. If the skin broke, wash the wound promptly with soap and running water, cover it with a clean dressing, and contact a healthcare professional for advice. Seek prompt care for a deep puncture, a bite on the hand, foot, face, or head, or any signs of infection. A clinician can assess the wound and decide whether antibiotics, tetanus prevention, or rabies guidance is needed.
How do I know if a cat bite is infected?
Watch for symptoms that are getting worse rather than judging the wound by the size of its opening. Cat teeth can make narrow punctures that introduce bacteria below the skin. The CDC says about 20–80% of reported cat bites and scratches become infected; this broad estimate is not an individual risk prediction and does not mean every bite will become infected. CDC guidance on cats discusses the risk.
Signs around the bite
- Increasing pain or tenderness
- Warmth, swelling, or spreading redness or other skin-color change
- Fluid or pus, or an unpleasant odor
- Red streaks extending away from the wound
Redness may be harder to see on black or brown skin; pain, warmth, swelling, and drainage are also important signs. NHS animal-bite guidance describes these symptoms.
Signs affecting your general health
Fever, chills or shivering, feeling hot or cold, or feeling generally unwell can indicate a more serious infection. Get prompt medical advice if these symptoms appear. A rapidly worsening wound, red streaks, or feeling seriously unwell calls for urgent assessment.

When should I seek medical care?
Contact a healthcare professional if a cat bite breaks the skin, even if it looks small. Seek advice promptly for a puncture or a bite to the hand, foot, face, or head, and if the wound becomes hot or swollen. Do not wait for infection symptoms when the bite is deep or otherwise concerning. NHS guidance identifies these situations as reasons for urgent advice.
- Seek urgent assessment for a rapidly worsening wound, red streaks, fever, or feeling seriously unwell.
- Get emergency care for uncontrolled bleeding, a deep or large wound, or concern that a tendon, joint, or other structure may be injured.
A cat bite can also expose a person to bacteria such as Capnocytophaga; serious illness is rare, but the CDC notes it can occur after dog or cat saliva exposure. See the CDC Yellow Book guidance on bites and other zoonotic exposures.

What to do after a cat bite
- Wash it promptly. Use soap and warm running water. In its travel-health guidance, the CDC Yellow Book advises washing bite or scratch wounds with soap and running water for at least 20 minutes. Follow local first-aid advice if circumstances make that impractical.
- Cover the cleaned wound. Use a clean dressing. A dressing protects the wound; it does not treat an infection or replace medical assessment.
- Arrange medical advice if the skin broke. Do this especially promptly for a puncture, a bite in a higher-risk location, or any concerning symptoms.
- Share useful details with the clinician. Explain when and where the bite happened, whether it punctured the skin, what you know about the cat’s health and vaccination status, and when the person last received a tetanus vaccine.
How is a cat bite infection treated?
Treatment depends on the wound and the person’s health. A clinician may clean or irrigate the wound, check its depth and whether nearby structures are injured, and decide whether it should be closed. Preventive antibiotics may be considered for higher-risk wounds; this is a clinical decision, not a reason to take leftover medication.
For an infected animal-bite wound, the Infectious Diseases Society of America recommends an antimicrobial that covers aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and gives amoxicillin-clavulanate as an example. This is clinician-directed guidance, not a prescription for self-treatment. Do not use leftover antibiotics or assume a topical ointment or clean bandage will treat an infection. IDSA skin and soft-tissue infection guidelines provide the treatment recommendation.

Will I need a tetanus shot or rabies assessment?
Tetanus
The CDC classifies puncture wounds and wounds containing saliva, including animal bites, as dirty or major wounds for tetanus assessment. A clinician will consider the wound category and vaccination history when deciding whether tetanus vaccination or other prevention is needed; there is no single booster rule that applies to everyone. Antibiotics—whether topical or taken by mouth—are not recommended to prevent tetanus after an injury. See the CDC clinical guidance for wound management to prevent tetanus.
Rabies
Ask promptly for local medical or public-health advice if the cat is stray, sick, unavailable for observation, or has an unknown vaccination status, particularly if the bite was unprovoked. Whether rabies prevention is recommended depends on the location, the animal, and the exposure; a general article cannot determine an individual’s risk. The NHS also advises clinicians to assess rabies risk after animal bites.
