For a prepared staple, choose good-quality aquatic turtle or terrapin pellets, then match the rest of the diet to the animal’s species and age. Fish should not dominate the menu: a predominantly fish diet may cause thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency, according to VCA’s aquatic turtle feeding guidance.
What does “fish food” mean?
The phrase can mean aquarium flakes or pellets made for fish, or whole fish offered as prey. These are different foods. Veterinary guidance allows some whole small fish as occasional food, but the sources do not test every aquarium fish-food formula or establish that it meets a terrapin’s needs.

That distinction matters: advice about the risks of feeding too much fish as prey is not proof that every fish flake is harmful, and a fish-based ingredient does not make aquarium food equivalent to a complete turtle diet.
Why turtle pellets are the better routine prepared food
Good-quality aquatic turtle or terrapin pellets are a better-supported prepared food for regular use. The Royal Veterinary College’s terrapin feeding handout, reviewed in December 2024, includes them among suggested foods and says they can be useful routinely. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), updated January 13, 2026, describes high-quality commercial turtle pellets as formulated to be balanced for red-eared sliders.

Pellets are one part of a diet, not a universal menu. Merck Veterinary Manual’s turtle nutrition review, updated September 2025, notes that commercial turtle feeds vary nutritionally and that diet needs differ among species. Choose a feed intended for aquatic turtles and seek species-specific guidance rather than assuming a fish food is interchangeable.
How species and age affect the diet
Many terrapins are omnivorous, but the balance of animal and plant matter varies by species and life stage. The RVC notes that young, growing animals naturally eat more live food, while adults naturally eat more plant matter; some species remain more carnivorous than others. For red-eared sliders specifically, AVS recommends a balance of proteins and leafy vegetables, with fruit only occasionally. That slider guidance should not be treated as a diet prescription for every terrapin.

- Freeze-Dried Insects: Perfect Blend of Freeze-Dried Shrimp, Freeze-Dried Meal worms, and Vitamin Fortified Pellets for both juvenile and adult aquatic turtles
- Balanced Meal: Complete nutritional variety in one jar.
- Floating Pellets: Vitamin-enriched pellets, with a unique texture that makes feeding easier for you and your turtles.
- Clean Environment: Does not cloud the water with proper feeding.
- Aids Shell Development: Added calcium supports shell development.
The RVC handout lists aquatic plants, salad and leafy vegetables, good-quality turtle or terrapin pellets, bloodworms and Tubifex worms among food options. It also lists rehydrated low-fat cat, dog or trout pellets only once or twice weekly, and fresh whole small fish as occasional food. Use such lists as guidance for an appropriate species, not as a reason to feed every listed item or to make fish the staple.

Risks of relying on fish or fish food
- Nutritional imbalance: VCA warns that a predominantly fish diet may lead to thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency and says fish should be only a small portion of an aquatic turtle’s diet.
- Feeder-fish pathogens: VCA says feeder fish may carry parasites or bacteria and should be used infrequently. It does not recommend wild-caught fish or amphibians.
- Water quality: Uneaten food can foul the water. The RSPCA’s terrapin care guidance identifies overfeeding as the main cause of poor water quality.
The pathogen warning concerns live feeder animals; it should not be misrepresented as a finding about all packaged aquarium flakes or pellets.

How much and how often should you feed?
There is no universal quantity that fits every terrapin. Follow the food’s directions and species-specific veterinary advice. The RVC recommends offering fresh food only in an amount the terrapin can consume within 30–40 minutes. Its handout suggests fresh food daily for juveniles and every 2–3 days for adults; those are practical recommendations, not a controlled feeding study, and age, species and individual health still matter. Remove uneaten food rather than letting it decay in the enclosure.

The available guidance does not set a safe one-off amount for ordinary aquarium flakes or pellets. A single accidental nibble is not the same situation as feeding fish food as the regular diet; return to the animal’s normal, species-appropriate food. If fish food has been the staple, the terrapin is repeatedly refusing its usual diet, or you notice signs of illness, contact a reptile veterinarian for advice tailored to its species and history.
