A hard-sided or well-ventilated soft carrier is the most practical way to transport a cat in a car. Uber specifically recommends a carrier or harness. For most cats, a closed carrier is easier to control than a harness alone, especially when opening the car door in an unfamiliar area. Make sure the carrier latches properly and is large enough for the cat to turn and lie down without being so large that the animal slides during braking.

If you are buying equipment for this trip, a cat carrier designed for car travel is the most directly relevant product category. Choose one you can close securely and carry without opening. Keep the cat inside the carrier from the moment you leave your starting point until you reach a secure indoor destination. Do not open the carrier in the vehicle, at the curb, or in a parking area. An anxious cat can escape through a door that is open for only a few seconds.
Place the carrier on the vehicle floor when it fits securely, or hold it level so it cannot tip. Avoid placing an unsecured carrier on a seat where it can slide. Do not let the cat ride loose, sit on the driver’s lap, or move around the cabin. A loose animal can distract the driver and may be injured in a sudden stop.
Keep the carrier away from direct drafts and excessive heat. Never leave the cat alone in the parked vehicle while you handle another errand. Uber’s Uber Pet tips expressly say not to leave the pet unattended. Plan the pickup and drop-off so the cat moves directly between secure indoor locations.
If Uber Pet is unavailable
You have two practical choices: postpone the trip until Uber Pet is offered, or request a regular ride and obtain the driver’s agreement. Uber’s rider guidance says a driver may choose whether to allow a non-service pet on an ordinary ride. That means a regular booking is conditional, even if you have used the service with a cat before.

- Send a concise message such as: “I’m traveling with one cat in a closed carrier. Is that acceptable for this trip?”
- Wait for a clear response before approaching the vehicle.
- If the driver says no or does not respond, do not pressure the driver. Cancel or let the request expire according to the options and terms shown in your app, then try another solution.
A driver who agrees to a regular ride is agreeing to that particular trip; it does not establish a permanent right to bring a pet on future bookings. Ask again whenever you are matched, especially if the cat, carrier, route, or local conditions have changed.

Do not hide the cat in a bag, claim that a pet is a service animal, or open the carrier to prove the cat is calm. Those actions create safety and policy problems and can put the animal, driver, and other road users at risk.
Service animals are not ordinary pets
Uber’s US service-animal policy defines a service animal as an animal trained to work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability. Under that policy, a rider does not need to provide documentation, and a service animal may accompany the rider without being booked through Uber Pet.
Ordinary-pet discretion and possible Uber Pet fees do not apply in the same way to a service animal. Do not use the companion-cat rules in this article to assess a legitimate service-animal trip. Review the ride breakdown before confirming. Uber says an additional Uber Pet fee may apply, and no single nationwide amount is published on the cited page. If the displayed price is unacceptable, do not request the ride.
The cat becomes distressed
