It might catch an individual cat’s attention, but interest in a tank is not the same as trust in a person. Don’t acquire tropical fish as a behavior treatment or assume that a cat approaching a tank is becoming tame.

Let the cat set the pace. Keep interactions calm and predictable, and make them positive from the cat’s perspective. Don’t force contact; give the cat room to approach, retreat, and choose whether to engage. Merck Veterinary Manual identifies positive, consistent, predictable human-cat interaction as one of the pillars of a suitable feline environment.

Use play and reward-based training
Offer play that lets the cat chase, pounce on, and bite an appropriate toy. You can also try clicker training: Merck says it can provide mental enrichment and build the human-cat bond. A clicker is a training aid, not a guarantee that a cat will become tame.
Meet needs beyond social interaction
Trust-building works alongside ordinary care, not instead of it. Merck’s environmental guidance calls for a safe place, separate and accessible core resources, opportunities for play and predatory behavior, positive human interaction, and respect for the cat’s sense of smell. Singapore’s Animal and Veterinary Service recommends practical options such as:

Don’t give cats string, yarn, rubber bands, or aluminium foil as toys: the Animal and Veterinary Service warns that swallowed material can cause a fatal bowel obstruction. Its cat-care guidance was updated 1 October 2026.
What to avoid when trying to tame a cat
Don’t scold, spank, or squirt a cat as punishment. Merck warns that positive punishment can damage the human-cat bond and trigger aggression or other unwanted behaviors. Punishment is not a shortcut to trust; use predictable, positive interaction instead.

When to get veterinary or behavior help
A change in behavior by itself does not prove a cat’s welfare has improved. In a 2009 review, Sarah L. H. Ellis noted that research on domestic-cat enrichment was sparse and that recommended practices needed more validation. For complex behavior problems, enrichment may need to be part of a tailored behavior-modification plan with a qualified clinical animal behaviorist. Training or veterinarian-prescribed medication may also be considered within such a plan. A full medical examination should not be overlooked before treating a behavior concern as purely environmental.
For broader care context, the UK government’s advisory standards for animals used in scientific settings recommend monitoring the effects of enrichment because an initiative does not necessarily benefit every animal. Those standards are for scientific settings, not household-specific instructions.
