Do not give a cat plain household Vaseline as a routine treatment for hairballs or constipation. No dose for plain Vaseline is established here, and it is not interchangeable with a cat-formulated hairball gel. Ask your veterinarian before giving any lubricant product; repeated vomiting or retching, lethargy, reduced appetite, or signs of constipation warrant veterinary advice.

Why plain Vaseline is not the same as cat hairball gel

Vaseline is a brand of household petroleum jelly. Some commercial hairball products for cats contain white petroleum jelly, but they are formulated products with their own ingredients and directions. Merck Veterinary Manual says to use these products only with veterinary approval and supervision: Managing Hairballs in Cats.

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association advises against using plain petroleum jelly for hairballs because it lacks added vitamins intended to account for petroleum’s potential interference with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins: Cat Hairballs. Directions for a formulated product should never be transferred to a jar of household Vaseline.

How much Vaseline can you give a cat?

The veterinary sources cited here establish no dose for plain Vaseline. Do not guess at an amount or put it on a cat’s paws or fur in an attempt to make the cat swallow it. If your veterinarian recommends a specific cat-formulated gel, use that product’s label and follow the veterinarian’s directions.

For example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s DailyMed label for Laxatone catnip hairball gel lists petrolatum, mineral oil, and soybean oil and provides directions for that product. Those directions are not instructions for plain Vaseline. The label says it is for cats and advises stopping use and consulting a veterinarian if the cat’s condition worsens or does not improve.

Vaseline and liquid paraffin are also distinct products. A 2016 veterinary lecture handout notes that its literature review found no feline studies of liquid paraffin for constipation; it does not establish a home dose or treatment for either product: When cats retch, heave, yack, gag ’n’ hurl — what does it really mean?.

What to do about hairballs

Cats swallow fur while grooming. Hair can collect into a hairball, and a dense hairball may irritate the stomach or obstruct the digestive tract. Cornell describes an intestinal blockage as potentially serious: The Danger of Hairballs.

Reduce loose fur

Brush or comb your cat regularly to remove loose fur before it is swallowed. If your cat is grooming excessively, ask a veterinarian about possible skin or allergy-related causes rather than treating the hairballs alone.

Ask about formulated options

Some commercial cat foods and treats are formulated to help prevent hairballs. A veterinarian can help decide whether a hairball-formula diet, treat, or specific gel makes sense for your cat. Neither a product purchase nor a home remedy substitutes for veterinary assessment when symptoms are frequent or severe.

Constipation needs its own veterinary plan

Do not assume that a hairball lubricant is the right treatment for constipation. A veterinary lecture handout lists options such as canned food, adding water, water-soluble fiber, polyethylene glycol 3350, and lactulose for veterinary consideration; it does not advise owners to start them without veterinary guidance. Contact your veterinarian to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

When to contact a veterinarian urgently

Seek prompt veterinary advice if your cat has repeated unproductive retching, true vomiting, lethargy, refusal to eat, or other signs of illness. Cornell advises examination for lethargy, refusal to eat for more than a day or two, repeated unproductive retching, or true vomiting; Merck also advises contacting a veterinarian when hairballs occur frequently or vomiting repeats.

Do not assume vomiting is caused by a hairball. It can also be associated with gastrointestinal disease, respiratory illness, toxins, or swallowed objects, as Cornell explains in Vomiting. If you suspect an obstruction or toxin exposure, contact a veterinarian promptly instead of trying Vaseline at home.
