There is no established universal switch age for Cane Corsos. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) says some large- and giant-breed dogs may not reach skeletal maturity until closer to 15–16 months, but your veterinarian should assess your dog’s growth and body condition before you change foods.
When should a Cane Corso switch to adult food?
Use maturity—not a fixed birthday—as the guide. AAHA recommends feeding a growth-appropriate diet until skeletal maturity and notes that some large- and giant-breed dogs may not reach it until closer to 15–16 months. That is broad guidance for a size category, not a Cane Corso-specific deadline or guarantee. Ask your veterinarian to assess your dog’s growth and advise when the transition is appropriate. The available guidance does not establish a reliable at-home test for skeletal maturity.
Until then, choose a complete diet formulated for large-breed puppy growth. Once your veterinarian considers your dog mature, select an adult maintenance food and introduce it gradually.
What is different about puppy and adult food?
Growing puppies need nutrients in different quantities and ratios than mature dogs. As the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) explains, “An active, growing puppy or kitten needs nutrients in different quantities and ratios than a mature pet.” A food’s nutritional adequacy statement identifies the life stage it is formulated to support; look for a statement covering growth, including growth of large-size dogs where applicable. An adult maintenance food is intended for mature dogs, not as the default choice while a Cane Corso is still growing.

Do not choose by a product’s breed-themed marketing or the words “puppy” or “adult” on the front of the bag alone. Check the adequacy statement on both the current food and the adult food you are considering. An “all life stages” statement is not the same as adult-only maintenance; check whether it covers growth of large-size dogs and discuss the choice with your veterinarian.
How to choose and feed each diet
While your Cane Corso is growing
- Choose a complete growth diet that covers large-size dogs where applicable.
- Keep your puppy lean. AAHA advises against excessive calcium for large- and giant-breed puppies; do not add calcium or vitamin-and-mineral supplements unless your veterinarian directs you to.
- Use the package’s feeding directions and calorie information as a starting point. Feeding amounts are guidelines, not a substitute for adjusting to your individual dog.
After your veterinarian recommends the switch
- Choose a complete adult maintenance food and confirm its adequacy statement matches the adult life stage.
- Follow the label’s feeding directions as a starting point, then work with your veterinarian to adjust the amount for your dog’s body condition and activity.
- Continue monitoring body condition rather than assuming the suggested serving is right for every dog.
How to transition from puppy food to adult food
Introduce the new food gradually over a few days instead of replacing the old food all at once. A sudden diet change may cause stomach upset or diarrhea. If digestive problems arise, or your dog has a medical condition, ask your veterinarian how to proceed.
