The best way to care for an American Eskimo puppy is to establish four routines from the first week home: brush and handle the double coat, combine age-appropriate movement with mental work, train and socialize gradually, and pair individualized nutrition with consistent veterinary care. American Eskimo Dogs are lively, curious and highly trainable, but their needs change as they grow. Use these breed-specific principles as a framework, then have your veterinarian tailor food, exercise limits, vaccinations and parasite prevention to your puppy.
1. Maintain the double coat and teach calm handling
An American Eskimo Dog’s brilliant white coat is a double coat: a dense insulating undercoat beneath a longer outer coat. The breed sheds regularly, often seeming to shed almost constantly. Coat care is therefore a recurring responsibility rather than an occasional makeover.

Brush two or three times each week
The American Kennel Club recommends a thorough brushing two or three times weekly. A slicker brush or pin brush designed for a double coat can lift loose undercoat and help prevent tangles. Work in small sections, brushing gently from the skin outward. Pay particular attention to areas that rub or mat, such as behind the ears, beneath the collar, around the legs and at the tail.
Do not yank through a knot. Separate a small tangle with your fingers, then use the brush in short strokes. If a mat is tight against the skin, stop and ask a professional groomer or veterinarian for help rather than cutting blindly. A puppy grooming brush should be comfortable in your hand, easy to clean and gentle enough that the puppy can learn to enjoy it.

Make grooming practice part of everyday life
Young puppies need to learn that paws, ears, mouth and tail can be touched safely. Begin with a few seconds of contact, reward stillness with a tiny training treat, and stop before the puppy becomes worried. Gradually build toward examining each paw, lifting an ear flap and running your fingers through the coat. Several calm, brief sessions are more effective than one long restraint session.
- Check the ears weekly for dirt, odor, redness or discharge. Ask your veterinarian before putting a cleaning product into the ear canal.
- Brush the teeth regularly with a pet-safe toothbrush and toothpaste recommended for dogs. Human toothpaste is not an appropriate substitute.
- Trim nails regularly, taking off only small amounts. If the puppy struggles, have a veterinary team member demonstrate a safe technique.
Bathe occasionally, not constantly
American Kennel Club guidance cautions that bathing more often than every few months can dry and irritate the skin. Bathe when the puppy is genuinely dirty or your veterinarian recommends it, using a dog shampoo and thoroughly rinsing the dense undercoat. Dry the coat completely, especially close to the skin, and brush afterward once it is dry. Regular brushing removes much of the dirt and loose hair between baths.
Do not shave an American Eskimo’s coat as a shortcut for shedding or summer heat. The care guidance reviewed does not support close shaving, and removing the coat changes the protection provided by the double-coat structure. Discuss severe coat problems, skin irritation or unusual shedding with a veterinarian.
2. Match exercise to growth and add daily brain work
American Eskimo Dogs are active and curious. The American Kennel Club describes the breed as needing both exercise and mental challenges, but a puppy cannot safely follow an adult dog’s workout plan. Exercise requirements depend on age, individual development and breed, and overdoing strenuous activity while bones are still growing can cause problems.

Build a flexible daily rhythm
Ask your veterinarian or responsible breeder what kinds of movement fit your puppy’s age and current development. Favor several short opportunities over a single exhausting session. Safe floor play, brief exploratory walks where permitted, gentle games and short training sessions can all count. Let the puppy rest between activities and increase duration gradually as the puppy matures.
Stop an activity if the puppy becomes unusually reluctant, repeatedly lies down, develops a limp or seems unable to recover normally. Those signs warrant a veterinary call, particularly if they recur. Never use forced running, repetitive jumping or long-distance exercise to tire out a growing puppy.
Use enrichment to satisfy curiosity
Mental work often tires a puppy without placing the same physical demand on growing joints. Rotate simple activities so the puppy does not rely on one toy or game:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Scatter part of the puppy’s measured meal in a safe area and let the puppy sniff it out under supervision.
- Practice one or two skills, such as responding to a name, touching a hand target or settling on a mat, for a few minutes at a time.
- Offer an appropriately sized food puzzle that is durable for the individual puppy’s chewing style and easy to clean.
- Provide supervised play with safe toys, removing anything that breaks into pieces.
A secure outdoor area can support play, but a puppy should not simply be left alone in a yard all day. Supervision prevents escapes, ingestion of unsafe objects and rehearsed nuisance behaviors. Alternate activity with naps and quiet time so the puppy learns that relaxing is also part of the routine.

3. Train early and socialize at the puppy’s pace
American Eskimo Dogs are intelligent and generally responsive to training. Without enough guidance, however, undertraining or being left alone too often can contribute to barking, destructive behavior or difficulty settling. Start with predictable house rules and reward the behavior you want repeated.
Teach practical skills with positive reinforcement
Use food, play or praise to reinforce desired choices; avoid intimidation or physical punishment. Keep sessions short and end while the puppy is still engaged. Useful first skills include responding to a name, coming when called indoors, walking calmly on a leash, trading an object for a treat, resting on a mat and accepting gentle handling.
- Say the puppy’s name once in a quiet setting.
- When the puppy looks toward you, mark the moment with praise or a treat.
- Gradually practice in rooms with more distractions, then in controlled outdoor settings.
- Reward check-ins and calm behavior before asking for harder tasks.
For house training, take the puppy out on a predictable schedule, especially after sleep, meals and play, and reward elimination in the correct place. Supervise indoors and use a safe crate or pen for brief management periods; the crate should never be used as punishment.

Introduce the world gradually
Early socialization means controlled, positive exposure to people, sounds, surfaces, places and healthy animals—not forcing the puppy into every situation. Let the puppy approach voluntarily. Pair a new experience with treats or play, keep the intensity low and provide an escape route. If the puppy freezes, hides, tucks the tail or repeatedly tries to retreat, increase distance and try an easier version later.

American Kennel Club guidance recommends early socialization and puppy training classes. Puppies can generally attend a class after vaccinations have started, but your veterinarian should advise when a particular class, facility or public area is appropriate in light of local disease conditions and the puppy’s medical history. Do not apply a blanket dog-park timetable to every puppy; ask your veterinarian about the risks in your area before visiting high-traffic dog spaces.
Practice being alone before it becomes a problem
Teach independence in tiny increments. Give the puppy a safe resting area with an appropriate chew, step away for a short period, and return before distress escalates. Extend the interval slowly. A puppy that receives exercise, sniffing opportunities, training and sleep is more likely to settle than one that is simply confined after an understimulating day.

There is no single food brand, calorie target or vaccination schedule that fits every American Eskimo puppy. Choose a complete, high-quality diet formulated for the puppy’s life stage and, when relevant, expected adult size. Your veterinarian can help select a food and portion that support steady growth without allowing excess weight.

Follow the food label as a starting point, divide the daily amount according to your veterinarian’s advice and monitor body condition. Weigh the puppy regularly under veterinary guidance and adjust portions as growth changes. Training treats count toward daily intake; use small pieces and reserve part of the measured meal for rewards when practical. Keep fresh water available at all times unless a veterinarian gives different instructions.

Sudden diet changes can cause digestive upset. Transition to a new food gradually and contact the veterinary clinic if vomiting, persistent diarrhea, refusal to eat or a marked change in energy develops. Do not add supplements, raw foods or homemade diets without professional advice, because the nutritional balance needed by a growing puppy is specific.
Schedule the first visit promptly
The American Eskimo Dog Club of America’s care handout advises planning a veterinary visit promptly after acquiring an American Eskimo. Bring adoption or breeder records, the current food information and any vaccination or deworming documentation. The veterinarian can establish a schedule for examinations, vaccinations, parasite prevention, microchipping and future sterilization decisions based on the puppy’s age, region and health.
Ask what symptoms require an urgent call, how to protect the puppy while vaccines are in progress and which parasites are common locally. Keep a written record of each vaccine, preventive treatment, weight and medication so another clinic can understand the puppy’s history if needed.
Understand breed testing without confusing it with puppy care
The American Kennel Club lists hip, ophthalmologist and PRCD/PRA-prcd evaluations among the American Eskimo Dog Club’s recommended tests for breeding stock. Those evaluations provide information about dogs considered for breeding; they are not a universal diagnostic schedule for every puppy already living in a home. Your puppy still needs an individualized physical examination and preventive-care plan.
If you are evaluating a breeder, ask for verifiable health records and clear explanations of what was tested, when and by whom. The breed club’s breeder directory states that being listed is not a club license or endorsement and does not guarantee a dog’s health or temperament. Treat directory inclusion as a referral resource, not certification.
A simple first-month checklist
- Book a veterinary appointment promptly and bring all available records.
- Start two or three gentle coat-brushing sessions each week.
- Handle paws, ears, mouth and collar area briefly every day, rewarding calmness.
- Set up a safe rest area, leash, bowls, grooming tools and supervised enrichment toys.
- Use short play and training periods separated by naps; avoid forced running and repetitive jumping.
- Plan gradual introductions to people, sounds, surfaces and healthy animals, following veterinary vaccination advice.
- Measure meals, monitor body condition and keep clean water available.
- Record questions about appetite, stool, skin, ears, gait or behavior for the next checkup.
These four routines—coat and body care, developmentally appropriate activity, positive training and socialization, and individualized nutrition with preventive medicine—give an American Eskimo puppy a dependable foundation. Adjust the details as the puppy grows and let your veterinary team resolve questions that depend on the individual dog or local health risks.
