Dwarf and Southern Cassowaries were especially distinct, while Northern Cassowary shapes shared characteristics with both. The result establishes a morphological pattern—not proof that the birds use casque shape to recognize species.
What the study compared
The casque is the conspicuous cranial structure that rises from a cassowary’s head. A study by Todd L. Green, David I. Kay, Aki Watanabe and Paul M. Gignac, reported by the American Ornithological Society on 14 October 2025, examined whether casque form differs among living cassowary species.

The comparison included three species:
- Casuarius bennetti, the Dwarf Cassowary
- Casuarius casuarius, the Southern Cassowary
- Casuarius unappendiculatus, the Northern Cassowary
The researchers analyzed 155 bird specimens. They photographed each casque in profile, digitally traced the outline, and used those outlines for shape analysis. The reported result concerns the average shapes of adult birds. It does not provide a field guide for identifying every individual, and it does not establish that one species has a universally unique casque at every age or in every population.

The main finding: average casque shapes are quantitatively different
The study found that adult cassowary species have measurably different average casque shapes. The strongest separation was between Dwarf and Southern Cassowaries. Northern Cassowary casques occupied a more intermediate position in the comparison, sharing characteristics with each of the other two species.

| Species | Pattern reported in the comparison | What that pattern does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarf Cassowary (C. bennetti) | Its average casque outline was particularly distinct from the Southern Cassowary’s. | It does not establish an individual-identification accuracy rate or a single diagnostic feature visible in every bird. |
| Southern Cassowary (C. casuarius) | Its average casque outline was particularly distinct from the Dwarf Cassowary’s. | It does not show that casque shape alone determines species recognition in the wild. |
| Northern Cassowary (C. unappendiculatus) | Its average shape shared characteristics with both the Dwarf and Southern Cassowaries. | It does not identify a particular evolutionary pathway or causal mechanism for that resemblance. |
“Quantitatively different” is important wording. The conclusion comes from comparing traced outlines rather than relying only on a person’s impression that one casque looks taller, flatter or otherwise unlike another. The account does not report species-specific sample sizes, effect sizes, measurements, geographic coverage or a classification test, so those details should not be inferred from the overall total of 155 specimens.
Why a shape difference matters biologically
A visible structure can have more than one role. The AOS account describes cassowary casques as conspicuous and notes several functions proposed by earlier researchers: visual signaling during territorial disputes, assessment of maturity and recognition of members of the same species.
The new shape comparison supports the last idea as a hypothesis. If species tend to have different average outlines, casque shape could provide information when a cassowary encounters another bird. But a morphological pattern is not the same as demonstrated behavior. The study did not show cassowaries inspecting casques, choosing a mate or rival on the basis of outline, or responding differently to images or models of different species.

What would count as behavioral evidence?
To establish species recognition, researchers would need observations or experiments connecting the shape differences to decisions made by living cassowaries. For example, a study might test whether birds respond differently to displays by conspecifics and other species, while controlling for posture, movement and other visual cues. The reported study did not perform that test, so species recognition remains a plausible interpretation rather than a demonstrated outcome.

Casques, territoriality and the “stretch display”
Cassowaries are described in the account as territorial. Green also discusses a ritualized behavior called a “stretch display,” in which a bird extends its body and neck upward while presenting its casque.
One proposed explanation is that the display increases the bird’s perceived height. If an opponent can be deterred without a dangerous physical clash, a conspicuous casque and an elongated posture could be useful visual signals. This is a functional interpretation, not a result measured by the outline analysis. The study establishes differences in average shape; it does not show that a particular shape makes a bird look taller, wins territorial encounters or reduces injuries.
Keeping the observations separate from the proposals
- Measured observation: digitally traced casque profiles produced quantitatively different adult average shapes among the three species.
- Possible signal: casque form might contribute to species recognition, maturity assessment or communication during territorial encounters.
- Proposed display function: the upward stretch display might make a bird appear larger or taller and discourage escalation.
These statements are related, but they are not interchangeable. The first is the direct finding. The others are explanations that require behavioral evidence.
A possible history involving isolation and later contact
The AOS account presents a scenario for how species-specific shapes could have become useful. Changing sea levels may have isolated cassowary populations between mainland Australia and New Guinea. If separated populations later came into contact, differences in casque shape might have offered a visual cue that helped maintain species boundaries.

This is an interpretation offered by Green, not a confirmed causal history. The shape comparison alone cannot reconstruct when isolation occurred, prove that sea-level changes produced the differences, or show that later contact made casque outlines into recognition signals. It is best treated as a testable evolutionary scenario: geography could influence divergence, and a conspicuous ornament could subsequently become relevant when lineages meet.
What the result adds to cassowary biology
Little is known about casque evolution, and the cassowary fossil record is poor. That combination makes a quantified comparison of living species valuable even though it leaves many questions unanswered.
First, the study provides a comparative baseline. Future work can ask whether the same differences appear in additional specimens, populations or age classes, rather than beginning with the assumption that all cassowary casques share one basic form. Second, it identifies a pattern that behavioral researchers can test: the Dwarf and Southern Cassowary averages are especially distinct, while the Northern Cassowary average overlaps in characteristics with both.
Third, the work encourages researchers to examine shape rather than treating the casque as a simple presence-or-absence feature. A structure can vary in its outline in ways that are potentially visible to another animal even when the underlying function remains uncertain.

Questions that remain open
- Do cassowaries actually use casque shape when distinguishing their own species from another?
- Are the observed differences consistent across geography, sex and age, or do they vary substantially within species?
- Did territorial displays drive the evolution of the casque, or did display behavior evolve around a structure that arose for another reason?
- Does casque shape convey maturity, fighting ability, body size or some combination of signals?
- How did the three species’ shapes change through evolutionary time?
The account does not answer these questions. It emphasizes the need for a stronger anatomical foundation before ecological and behavioral drivers can be assessed confidently.

Living cassowaries offer an unusual opportunity because researchers can observe both anatomy and behavior in the same animals. That makes them a useful reference when paleontologists interpret ornaments in extinct species. A fossil horn or crest can be described anatomically, but its original social or ecological role is harder to test directly.
Green argues that cassowaries can help frame those interpretations. The logic is comparative: if a prominent cranial structure varies among living species and may participate in visual display, then shape, visibility and posture deserve attention when studying extinct ornaments.

Fossil animals had different bodies, environments, evolutionary histories and social systems, and their soft tissues and behavior are only partly recoverable. Similar-looking structures can evolve for different reasons, while similar functions can be carried by different shapes.

A disciplined way to use living analogies
- Describe the fossil structure first. Record its geometry, position, symmetry and likely visibility without assigning a function.
- Identify the living comparison. Explain which anatomical or behavioral feature in the living animal is genuinely comparable.
- Separate pattern from mechanism. A living species difference can show that ornament shape varies; it cannot by itself prove why it varies.
- State alternative functions. Display, species recognition, maturity assessment and competition may all remain possible until independent evidence excludes them.
- Match confidence to evidence. Use terms such as “consistent with” or “supports the possibility of,” rather than presenting an analogy as a demonstrated behavior.
Limits readers should keep in view
The study’s scope is specific. It covers three living species and 155 specimens, with profile photographs and digitally traced outlines. It does not cover every cassowary population, extinct relatives or all possible views of the casque.
- The reported averages do not tell us how much individual casques overlap between species.
- No individual-identification accuracy, diagnostic threshold or field-screening method is reported.
- The account does not provide species-by-species sample counts, statistical effect sizes or a geographic survey.
- The shape result does not identify a causal mechanism for the differences.
- No behavioral experiment demonstrates that cassowaries recognize species from casque shape.
- The proposed sea-level history and the proposed deterrent effect of the stretch display remain interpretations.
- The comparison cannot directly determine the function of horns, crests or other ornaments in extinct animals.
Those limitations do not make the result unimportant. They define what it can support: a measured difference in adult average casque morphology, plus hypotheses that can be investigated with behavioral, developmental, geographic and evolutionary studies.
How to interpret the finding in one sentence
Among Dwarf, Southern and Northern Cassowaries, adult casque outlines differ in their average form—most strongly between the Dwarf and Southern species, with the Northern species sharing traits with both—but the comparison shows shape variation, not that cassowaries have been proven to use casques for species recognition or any other particular behavior.
