The best cat-accessory list is not a shopping mandate. Start with the essentials for toileting, food, transport, safety and scratching, then add items that match your cat’s age, mobility, coat, habits and comfort. A kitten may need a low-entry litter box; a senior cat with arthritis may need the same. A cat that scratches the carpet may prefer a horizontal pad, while a furniture-scratcher may use a tall post. Use the 12 categories below as a menu, not a universal checklist.
Which cat accessories are essential, and which are optional?
Every cat needs reliable access to a clean toilet area, fresh food and water, a safe way to travel, an appropriate scratching surface, and places to rest and retreat. Identification, play, grooming and enrichment complete the practical setup, but the exact products should follow the individual cat rather than a fashionable room makeover.

Care guidance from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, The International Cat Association (TICA), the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Nebraska Humane Society, and the AAFP/ISFM feline-environment guidelines all cover overlapping parts of this setup. None establishes one product or combination as best for every cat.
12 types of cat accessories to consider
1. Collar and ID tag
A collar with an ID tag gives a finder immediate contact information if an indoor cat slips outside. ASPCA includes a safety collar and ID tag in its general cat-supply checklist. Treat it as one layer of identification, not a replacement for other identification methods such as a permanent record held by a veterinarian.

Fit matters more than decoration. Check that the collar is appropriate for the individual cat, sits comfortably without restricting breathing or swallowing, and does not rub the skin. Recheck the fit as a kitten grows or a cat’s weight changes. A collar that catches on furniture, plants or another animal can create an emergency, so remove it if the cat repeatedly struggles with it or develops irritation. Keep the tag’s phone number current and make sure the material and attachment do not create a snagging hazard.
2. Harness and leash
A harness-and-leash set can support controlled outdoor time, travel between locations or supervised exploration. It is optional: the available care guidance does not establish that every cat can or should be walked. Some cats find restraint frightening, while others learn to accept it gradually.
Choose a harness that distributes pressure across the body and cannot be backed out of. Introduce it indoors for brief sessions, reward calm behavior, and attach the leash only after the cat moves normally in the harness. Do not drag, chase or force a frightened cat. Outdoor use also requires a secure environment, attention to traffic and other animals, and a plan to return indoors if the cat freezes or panics.

A carrier is a core safety item for veterinary visits, emergencies and any journey. The AAFP/ISFM guideline describes it as a safe, familiar place and cautions against carriers that do not allow a cat to conceal itself. A partial cover can make the interior feel more sheltered while preserving ventilation.
Look for a carrier that is stable, well ventilated and large enough for the cat to turn and rest without being tossed around. A wide opening or removable top can make gentle placement easier than pushing a reluctant cat through a small door. Leave the carrier open at home with familiar bedding so it becomes ordinary furniture rather than a warning that a stressful trip is coming. Secure it so it cannot slide, and keep a cleanable liner available for accidents.

4. Litter box and scoop
The litter box is a daily-use necessity, and the right access can prevent avoidable accidents. Cornell notes that kittens and older cats with arthritis may need lower sides. Many cats prefer a simple box without a hood, although preferences vary; a covered design is not automatically wrong if the cat uses it comfortably.
Prioritize an entrance the cat can reach, enough interior room to turn around, and a location that is quiet but not so isolated that the cat feels trapped. Keep the box away from food and water. A scoop that makes daily removal easy is part of the setup, and the RSPCA includes one among preparation supplies. Clean the box routinely, watch for changes in use, and reconsider the box’s size, height, cleanliness or location if the cat begins avoiding it.

Use separate dishes for food and water and keep both away from the litter box, following Cornell’s care guidance. Clean bowls regularly, provide fresh contents, and choose a stable shape that is difficult to tip. Some cats dislike having their whiskers press against deep or narrow sides, so a broad, shallow profile may be more comfortable.
Place the feeding area where the cat can eat without being cornered by people, dogs or other cats. If several cats share a home, watch for blocking or guarding and provide enough separate access for each animal. Bowls are simple accessories, but their location and cleanliness affect whether a cat uses them consistently.
6. Water fountain
A fountain changes how water is presented and may appeal to a cat that prefers moving water. The RSPCA lists one as an additional item to consider according to the cat’s needs, so it is an option rather than a requirement.

Choose a model you can disassemble and clean thoroughly; hidden residue, hair and slimy surfaces defeat the purpose of offering fresh water. Keep a regular water bowl available while you test the fountain and retain it if the cat ignores the device. Observe actual drinking rather than assuming a fountain improves intake for every individual.
7. Bed and hiding place
A bed provides a designated resting surface, while a hiding place gives a cat a sheltered way to withdraw. The RSPCA lists both categories and notes that a simple box with a blanket can serve as one hiding-place setup. You do not need an elaborate structure if the cat prefers a quiet corner or an ordinary cardboard box.
Offer resting choices at different temperatures and heights only if your home allows them safely. Keep a refuge away from heavy foot traffic and make sure the cat can leave without being blocked. Washable covers help with hair and accidents. Never pull a hiding cat out merely to make it interact; the value of the space is that the cat controls access.
8. Scratching post or pad
Scratching is normal exercise, stretching and scent-marking behavior, not a bad habit to eliminate. Cornell describes vertical posts for cats that scratch furniture and horizontal options for cats that scratch flooring. ASPCA advises a sturdy post with a rough surface.
Match the accessory to the observed motion. A vertical scratcher should be tall enough for a full stretch and heavy enough not to wobble; a horizontal pad should stay put when the cat leans into it. Place it beside a targeted piece of furniture or along a route the cat already uses, then reward investigation. Provide more than one orientation when the cat’s habits are mixed. Replace frayed or unstable equipment before it becomes unsafe, and avoid punishing scratching, which does not teach the cat where to scratch instead.

9. Cat tree or perch
A cat tree, tower or window ledge offers vertical territory, observation and a place to rest above household activity. The RSPCA lists a cat tree as an additional item, and the Nebraska Humane Society recommends a cat tower or window ledge as one way to add usable space. It is an enhancement, not a mandatory purchase.
Stability is the first selection test: a tall structure must not rock when the cat jumps or lands. Check platforms, fasteners and coverings regularly. Position a perch where the cat can watch safely, not beside an open window without secure screening or near a drop. A low step, shelf or sturdy piece of furniture can provide useful elevation for a cat that does not need a floor-to-ceiling tower.
10. Interactive toys
TICA recommends a variety of toys, and the AAFP/ISFM guideline describes play-based interaction as part of a cat-friendly environment. Rotate toys so familiar objects remain interesting, and select movement styles that match the cat’s behavior: chasing, pouncing, batting or stalking.
For wand toys, let the cat catch the end periodically instead of keeping the target permanently out of reach. The AAFP/ISFM guidance also advises avoiding play with hands and feet, which can teach a cat to bite or claw people. Store string, feathers and small detachable parts when you cannot supervise; inspect toys for damage and discard pieces that can be swallowed.

Feeding toys can turn part of a meal into a foraging task. The RSPCA includes feeding toys in its rescue-cat preparation list, and the AAFP/ISFM guideline discusses devices and practices that require a cat to work to acquire food. They are optional enrichment, not a test every cat must pass.

- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
Start with an easy design and a small portion of the cat’s normal food. Increase difficulty only when the cat engages without frustration, and make sure the device releases enough food for the intended meal. Supervise the first sessions, especially with a toy that can be chewed or knocked apart. If the cat refuses the device, feed normally and try a simpler format later; enrichment should not compromise nutrition.
12. Grooming tools
Brushes, combs and nail clippers belong in the toolkit when they suit the cat’s coat and handling tolerance. Cornell notes that grooming can remove loose fur; TICA lists brushes or combs and nail clippers among essential supplies. Long, dense or easily tangled coats generally need more frequent, careful attention than short coats, but every cat’s tolerance differs.
Introduce a tool with brief touches and rewards rather than restraining a struggling cat for a long session. Use a brush that reaches the coat without scraping skin, and check for mats where friction is common. If a tangle is tight, skin looks sore or the cat becomes distressed, seek veterinary or professional grooming help instead of cutting blindly. Nail care should remove only the sharp tip; learn the anatomy before clipping and stop if the cat resists strongly.

How to choose accessories for a new cat
Buy the items that support safety and routine first, then observe before adding specialized gear. This sequence limits waste and lets the cat’s behavior guide the next purchase.
- Set up the essentials before arrival. Prepare a carrier, litter box and scoop, separate food and water dishes, a scratching surface, and a quiet resting or hiding area.
- Check access and mobility. For kittens or cats with arthritis, test whether the litter-box entrance is easy to reach. Make every route to food, water and rest free of barriers.
- Watch preferences for several days. Note whether scratching is vertical or horizontal, whether the cat chooses covered or open resting places, and which toy movements prompt engagement.
- Add one optional item at a time. A fountain, perch, harness, puzzle feeder or extra bed is easier to evaluate when you know which change affected the cat’s behavior.
- Inspect and maintain everything. Wash bowls and fountain parts, scoop litter, launder bedding, tighten climbing furniture, check collars and replace damaged toys.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying for appearance instead of access: A beautiful high-sided box is useless if a kitten or arthritic cat cannot enter it.
- Assuming one design suits every cat: Hooded litter boxes, fountains, harnesses and puzzle feeders all depend on individual acceptance.
- Using unstable equipment: A post or tower that tips can make a cat avoid the accessory and cause injury.
- Forcing interaction: Dragging a cat from a hiding place, insisting on harness walks or continuing a grooming session through panic damages trust.
- Ignoring maintenance: Dirty bowls, an unclean fountain, a full litter box or a frayed toy can make a useful accessory unsafe or unattractive.
- Leaving high-risk toys unattended: Remove strings, ribbons and small detachable parts when play is unsupervised.
A practical buying checklist
- Carrier that is stable, ventilated and allows concealment
- Litter box with an entry the cat can manage, plus a scoop
- Separate, cleanable food and water dishes placed away from litter
- At least one stable scratching surface matched to the cat’s orientation
- Washable resting space and an undisturbed hiding option
- Several safe toys, including a supervised interactive option
- Identification plan and a collar only if the individual cat accepts a safe fit
- Coat-appropriate brush or comb and nail clippers when needed
- Optional fountain, perch, harness or puzzle feeder selected after observing the cat
What is worth buying for your particular feline?
Spend first on access, safety, hygiene and normal behavior: a usable litter area, fresh feeding setup, secure carrier, appropriate scratcher and protected places to rest. Then tailor optional accessories to evidence from your own cat. A fountain is worthwhile only if it is used and maintained; a tower is useful only if the cat enjoys vertical space; a harness is appropriate only when the cat remains calm and secure in it. The most effective collection is therefore not the largest one, but the one your cat can comfortably use every day.
