Before pickup, prepare a secure carrier, the cat’s familiar food and litter if you can get them, and a quiet room with the basics for eating, drinking, resting, and using the litter box. Ask the adoption organization for medical records and details of care already provided, then arrange a veterinary checkup. This checklist covers what to set up before arrival and how to make the first days easier.
What to have ready before pickup
- Secure carrier: Use one for the ride home and future veterinary trips. Humane Society Silicon Valley calls a secure carrier mandatory for taking a kitty home, and Cornell includes one among basic provisions: Humane Society Silicon Valley; Cornell Feline Health Center.
- Food and water bowls, food, and litter: Ask what food and litter the cat currently uses. Having those familiar options on hand can make the transition less abrupt. Cats Protection advises initially using the food and litter a kitten already knows: Cats Protection.
- Litter box: Set it up before arrival in a practical, accessible location. Follow the adoption organization’s advice about the cat’s existing routine.
- Scratching surface and a few safe toys: These give the cat appropriate places to scratch and explore. A bed or other resting spot, brush, toothbrush, and nail clippers can also be useful; choose grooming supplies based on the cat’s needs.
- Identification: An ID collar or tag can be a useful addition. Ask the organization whether the cat is microchipped and how registration is handled.
These are practical categories, not a requirement to buy a particular brand or a large collection of supplies. Prioritize safe, suitable items and continuity with what the cat already knows.
Set up a quiet room and cat-proof the home
Prepare one calm room where the cat can begin to settle, with food, water, a litter box, a resting place, and the carrier. American Humane recommends starting a new cat in one room and making introductions slowly: American Humane. Keep the setup workable for the individual cat and follow the adoption organization’s instructions.
- Put away loose objects the cat might chew or swallow.
- Check accessible electrical cords and secure or remove hazards.
- Give the cat room to explore without forcing interaction or access to the whole home.
What to ask the adoption organization
Before pickup, ask for the cat’s familiar routine and the records your veterinarian will need. Shelters and rescue organizations may have already provided some care, but what has been done varies by organization and animal.

- What food and litter is the cat used to?
- Can you provide the medical and vaccination records?
- Which vaccinations, parasite treatments, spay or neuter care, and microchip services have already been completed?
- Is there any known health concern, medication, or follow-up care to discuss with the veterinarian?
American Humane notes that shelters may already have provided some services, and Humane Society Silicon Valley recommends reviewing medical history with a family veterinarian: American Humane; Humane Society Silicon Valley.
If you are adopting a kitten
Age affects diet and veterinary planning. PetMD advises that kittens under six months need food formulated for growth and recommends consulting a veterinarian before starting flea and tick prevention. Ask the veterinarian to tailor advice to the kitten’s age, health, records, and location: PetMD.

Pickup day: bring the cat home safely
- Secure the cat in the carrier. Keep the cat contained for the trip home rather than carrying it loose.
- Take the carrier to the prepared room. Let the cat come out and explore at its own pace.
- Keep early introductions gradual. If you have other pets, start with separation and follow a gradual introduction plan suited to the animals and your home. American Humane notes that a cat may take several weeks to relax in a new environment and recommends a separate room when other pets are present: American Humane.
Let the cat set the pace for interaction. Avoid forcing contact with people or resident pets; use the adoption organization’s advice if it has a plan for this cat.

Choose a veterinarian and schedule a visit to review the cat’s health, records, vaccination needs, and parasite prevention. Guidance on timing differs: American Humane recommends a visit within the first few days after adoption, while Humane Society Silicon Valley recommends an exam within one to two weeks. Coordinate with the adoption organization and your veterinarian; seek advice sooner if the cat seems unwell or has a known health concern.

Vaccination plans are not one-size-fits-all. Cats Protection describes a typical kitten course in the UK that begins at eight to nine weeks, followed by another vaccination three to four weeks later. That is general UK guidance, not a universal schedule; the veterinarian should set the plan based on age, health, previous vaccinations, and location: Cats Protection.
