A lizard is not automatically poisonous to a cat, but eating wild prey can expose cats to parasites. The best next step depends on where it happened, whether your cat swallowed the animal, and how your cat is acting. Contact a veterinarian if your cat seems unwell, you cannot identify the animal, or the exposure occurred in a region where liver flukes are found. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian tells you to.

Can cats eat lizards?

Cats should not be fed lizards. A cat that catches or eats one is not necessarily poisoned, but a wild lizard is not a safe or appropriate treat: it may carry an infectious parasite, and the risk varies by location and the prey animal’s infection status.

The phrase “lizard poisoning” can be misleading. The Companion Animal Parasite Council explains that it describes illness after a cat eats a lizard carrying the infective stage of the liver fluke Platynosomum fastosum and becomes infected—not poisoning caused simply by the lizard itself. CAPC’s Platynosomum fastosum guideline describes this distinction.

Why location matters: liver flukes in cats

In tropical and subtropical areas, cats may acquire liver flukes after eating infected lizards or other intermediate hosts. Cornell identifies Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Mexico among areas where free-roaming cats that eat lizards, geckos, or toads may be at risk. See Cornell’s overview of liver flukes in cats.

The Merck Veterinary Manual reports that about 15%–85% of cats with access to intermediate hosts in endemic areas are infected. This broad regional estimate is not the chance that any particular lizard is infected, nor an individual cat’s probability after one encounter.

Signs to watch for—and why a normal cat may still need advice

Many cats initially show no clinical signs. Merck reports that liver flukes mature within 8–12 weeks; that is a parasite development interval, not a guaranteed timetable for symptoms. A cat appearing normal right after eating a lizard does not rule out a later parasite problem in an endemic area.

Possible signs of illness include:

  • Poor appetite or lethargy
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Weight loss or fever
  • Jaundice, such as yellowing of the eyes or gums
  • An enlarged abdomen

These signs can have causes other than liver flukes. A veterinarian can assess them in the context of your cat’s location and exposure. Cornell’s liver-fluke guidance notes that early infection may not be obvious.

What to do if your cat ate a lizard

  1. Check your cat’s condition. If your cat has difficulty breathing, seizures, or another severe sign, seek urgent veterinary care. For suspected toxic ingestion or other concerning symptoms, contact a veterinarian promptly; Cornell’s poison guidance advises immediate veterinary contact when poisoning is suspected.
  2. Call your veterinarian for case-specific advice. Do so if your cat is unwell, the lizard’s identity is uncertain, or the exposure happened in a tropical or subtropical area where liver-fluke infection is possible. Tell the clinic where and when it happened, whether your cat swallowed the animal, and what signs you see.
  3. Share identification details only if safely available. A photo or other useful information may help identify the animal. Do not handle wildlife to collect it.
  4. Do not try home treatment. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to. Do not give an over-the-counter dewormer or home remedy based on a guess; a veterinarian must decide whether examination or treatment is appropriate.

Can you prevent this risk?

Reducing opportunities to hunt wild prey can lower exposure to parasites carried by lizards and other intermediate hosts, particularly in areas where liver flukes occur. For routine feeding, use a complete, balanced cat diet rather than lizards or other wild prey; Cornell’s cat-feeding guidance covers balanced nutrition and infection concerns associated with raw animal foods.
