Zebra Haworthia and Cats: How to Check the Plant and What to Do After Chewing

ASPCA lists Zebra Haworthia (Haworthia fasciata) as non-toxic to cats, but chewing any plant may upset a cat’s stomach. Confirm the plant’s scientific name and contact a veterinarian if your cat is ill or the identity is uncertain.

No—ASPCA lists Haworthia, including Zebra Haworthia (Haworthia fasciata), as non-toxic to cats. That does not make it food: chewing any plant can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. Because “zebra plant” can refer to different plants and Haworthia can resemble aloe, check the scientific name before relying on the label. If your cat is ill or you are unsure what it ate, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435.

Is Zebra Haworthia poisonous to cats?

ASPCA classifies Haworthia species and Zebra Haworthia, identified as Haworthia fasciata, as non-toxic to cats. The listing is about the identified plant, not every houseplant sold under the common name “zebra plant.”

“Non-toxic” is not the same as safe to eat. ASPCA notes that plant material, including non-toxic plants, may cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset when a cat chews or swallows it. Its general guidance says plants listed as non-toxic or as potentially causing mild gastrointestinal upset are not expected to be life-threatening; that is not a guarantee about an individual cat or an uncertain plant identification.

How to tell whether your plant is Haworthia

Look for the scientific name Haworthia fasciata or Haworthia on the nursery label or purchase listing. ASPCA specifically names H. fasciata as Zebra Haworthia and lists Haworthia species as non-toxic. Common names and plant appearances can vary, so a name such as “zebra plant” alone is not enough to confirm which plant you have.

Haworthia may be mistaken for Aloe vera, which Cats Protection includes on its toxic-plant list. If the label is missing, unclear, or inconsistent with the plant, ask the seller, a nursery, or your veterinarian to identify it. Do not decide toxicity from a photo or common name alone.

What to do if your cat chews or swallows it

  1. Check the plant name. Keep the label or purchase details and confirm whether it says Haworthia or Haworthia fasciata. If you cannot confidently identify it, tell the veterinarian that the plant is uncertain.
  2. Contact a veterinarian if your cat is ill or you are concerned. ASPCA advises calling a veterinarian or its 24-hour Animal Poison Control hotline at (888) 426-4435 about possible ingestion. Share the plant name, if known, and what happened.
  3. Do not try to diagnose the exposure from “zebra plant.” The common name does not establish the species, and the ASPCA listings do not provide a Haworthia-specific dose threshold, symptom timeline, or clinical outcome.

What the toxicity listing can—and cannot—tell you

  • It can tell you: ASPCA lists Haworthia species and Zebra Haworthia (Haworthia fasciata) as non-toxic to cats.
  • It cannot establish: a harmless amount to eat, whether a particular cat will have symptoms, or what an unidentified “zebra plant” is.
  • It does not replace professional advice: call a veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control if your cat is unwell, the plant identity is uncertain, or you are worried about ingestion.
