The CBC evaluates blood cells; chemistry measures substances linked to metabolism and organ function. A urinalysis is often added because urine concentration and sediment can change how kidney and urinary findings are understood.
The right panel depends on your cat’s age, symptoms, examination, medical history and exposure risks. A flagged number is a clue, not a diagnosis. Your veterinarian must interpret the result against that laboratory’s reference interval, the physical examination and changes over time.

What “cat bloodwork” includes
There is no single universal cat blood panel. Clinics select tests for the question they are trying to answer. A broad health screen commonly combines a CBC and serum chemistry, while urine or disease-specific tests are added when indicated.

A CBC counts and characterizes red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red-cell measurements can reveal patterns that warrant evaluation for anemia or other blood disorders. White-cell counts and their different cell types may support investigation of inflammation, infection or immune-related problems. Platelet numbers provide information relevant to clotting.

The CBC does not identify one disease by itself. Hydration, stress, medications, sampling problems and many illnesses can affect cell values, so the pattern must be read with the examination and history.
Serum chemistry or biochemistry panel
Chemistry testing examines the liquid portion of blood. Depending on the panel, it may include glucose, electrolytes, proteins, enzymes, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and other kidney-related measurements. The exact analytes differ between clinics and laboratory packages.
These measurements help a veterinarian assess metabolic balance and look for patterns involving organs such as the kidneys or liver. Chemistry results are not a complete organ “score”; they are pieces of evidence interpreted together.
Urinalysis
A urinalysis is a separate urine test, not part of the blood panel. Cornell describes routine urinalysis as including color, turbidity, dipstick chemistry, urine specific gravity and microscopic sediment examination. Urine concentration and sediment can add information that blood values alone cannot provide, especially when kidney or urinary disease is being considered.
Why CBC and chemistry are commonly paired
The tests answer different questions and are usually run from separate tubes. Rachel Groveman, DVM, of LeadER Specialty Animal Hospital, told the American Animal Hospital Association on July 2, 2025: “They’re run from separate tubes of blood, so you have to pull for both, but you almost never run one without the other, unless you’re just monitoring one specific value on a CBC.”

Ordering both gives the clinician a wider view than either test alone. A cat can have an abnormal cell pattern with relatively unremarkable chemistry, or a chemistry concern without a major CBC change.
Which extra tests may be added
Add-ons should answer a specific clinical question rather than appear automatically on every invoice.
| Test | What it assesses | When a veterinarian may consider it |
|---|---|---|
| T4 (thyroid hormone) | Circulating thyroid hormone | Investigation of possible thyroid disease, particularly in mature or senior cats or cats with compatible findings |
| SDMA and other renal indices | Additional markers used in kidney assessment | When kidney health is a concern or when the clinician wants more information alongside routine chemistry and urine findings |
| FeLV testing | Evidence of feline leukemia virus infection | Kittens, cats with unknown status, cats with exposure risk or cats whose illness makes testing appropriate |
| FIV testing | Evidence of feline immunodeficiency virus infection | Cats with unknown status, relevant exposure or a clinical reason to test |
FeLV and FIV screening is not automatically included in every routine CBC and chemistry panel. Ask which test is being proposed, why it fits your cat and whether a positive screening result would require confirmation.
How veterinarians interpret the report
Reference intervals are laboratory-specific
Every report places results beside a reference interval. A value just outside that interval may be less important than a pronounced abnormality, a matching symptom or a consistent change from earlier tests. Intervals can differ by analyzer, laboratory method, patient population and local laboratory practice.
Patterns matter more than isolated flags
A single high or low number has multiple possible explanations. The veterinarian considers the magnitude of the change, related results, hydration status, medications, examination findings and the reason testing was ordered. Blood and urine findings may need to be interpreted together rather than separately.

Trends can reveal an evolving problem
Comparing results over time can be more informative than viewing one report. The American Animal Hospital Association describes monitoring trends such as glucose and creatinine as one way to identify developing concerns. Bring earlier laboratory reports to the appointment so the clinician can compare values using the same or a comparable method when possible.

Minor chemistry abnormalities may lead to a repeat sample, particularly if the cat feels well and the rest of the profile is reassuring. More substantial or coordinated abnormalities may prompt expanded blood testing, urine testing, blood-pressure measurement or imaging. The next step depends on the whole clinical picture; do not start treatment based on a highlighted result alone.
Samantha O’Gorman, DVM, of Thrive Pet Healthcare, explained to AAHA: “Cats are really, really great at being stoic and hiding what’s wrong, and a lot of the signs that something is wrong are really subtle.” That is why a veterinarian may investigate a small change even when a cat appears outwardly normal.
Using blood and urine together for kidney questions
Creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and other chemistry values can contribute to a kidney assessment, but they do not describe every aspect of kidney function. Urine specific gravity shows how concentrated the urine is, while dipstick and sediment findings provide separate chemical and microscopic information.
A veterinarian may therefore recommend a urinalysis with bloodwork when kidney disease is suspected, when an older cat is being screened or when the chemistry pattern needs clarification. SDMA or another renal index may be added, but no single marker should be treated as a stand-alone diagnosis.

How much cat bloodwork costs
PetMD’s 2025 U.S. guide places routine bloodwork containing a CBC and biochemistry panel at approximately $100–$200 for dogs and cats. This is a broad guide range, not a guaranteed quote for a particular clinic, city or laboratory. Special tests can change the total substantially.
Before approving testing, ask for an itemized estimate. A low headline price may cover only the laboratory panel, while another estimate may include the examination, collection and interpretation.
| Cost question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Which analytes are included? | “Chemistry panel” can mean different groups of tests; ask whether kidney values, electrolytes, proteins and enzymes are included. |
| Is a CBC included? | A chemistry-only quote does not answer the same questions as a CBC-plus-chemistry screen. |
| Is urinalysis separate? | Urine collection, dipstick testing, specific gravity and sediment examination may be billed separately. |
| Are T4, SDMA or FeLV/FIV included? | These are commonly add-on tests rather than automatic components of routine bloodwork. |
| Are examination and blood-collection fees included? | Some clinics list the consultation, venipuncture or handling charge separately. |
| Is the sample tested in-house or sent out? | Workflow can affect turnaround time and the final laboratory fee; neither approach is universally superior. |
| Is interpretation included? | Confirm whether the veterinarian’s review and follow-up discussion are part of the estimate. |
Preparing your cat for bloodwork
Ask about fasting instead of assuming it
PetMD notes that fasting may be requested for some tests to reduce interference from lipemia, the cloudy appearance caused by fat in a blood sample. Requirements depend on the planned tests and your cat’s health. Follow the clinic’s exact instructions; do not impose a fast by default.
If your cat has a medical condition, receives medication with food or becomes distressed when food is withheld, tell the clinic before the appointment. The veterinary team can give instructions appropriate to the planned tests.
Reduce transport stress
- Confirm the appointment time, test list and any fasting or medication instructions.
- Use a secure carrier and keep your cat inside it while waiting, as PetMD advises.
- Bring medication details, current symptoms, diet information and previous laboratory reports.
- Tell the staff about recent illness, appetite or drinking changes, vomiting, diarrhea, weight change and any possible exposure to infectious cats.
- Ask when results are expected and how the clinic will contact you.
Stress can complicate handling and some measurements, so a calm, secure carrier and clear history help the team obtain and interpret the sample safely.

How often should a cat have bloodwork?
There is no evidence-based single interval that fits every cat. The AAHA/AAFP life-stage guidance lists CBC, serum biochemistry, urinalysis, T4, renal indices and blood pressure among assessments that may be considered, while emphasizing that the plan should be tailored to the individual’s history and physical examination.
A healthy young cat with no concerning findings may need a different schedule from a senior cat, a cat taking long-term medication or one being monitored for a known disease. Frequency can also change after an abnormal result, a new symptom or a treatment adjustment.
Ask your veterinarian three practical questions: which tests are needed now, what change would trigger earlier testing, and when should the next comparison sample be collected? The answer should be specific to your cat rather than a blanket annual or six-month rule.

How to compare two proposed panels
If two clinics or two packages are offered, compare the contents rather than the package names.
- List every included test: CBC, individual chemistry analytes, urinalysis, T4, SDMA and any FeLV/FIV screening.
- Check whether sample collection, examination, send-out laboratory fees and result interpretation are included.
- Ask where the sample will be analyzed and the expected turnaround time.
- Request the veterinarian’s reason for each add-on based on your cat’s age, symptoms, history or exposure.
- Confirm whether a repeat sample or confirmatory test would create an additional charge.
The available guidance supports tailoring test selection, but it does not establish that one laboratory workflow is universally better than another. A clinically appropriate panel with a clear interpretation plan is more useful than the longest list of analytes.
Questions to ask when results return
- Which values are genuinely abnormal for this laboratory, and how far outside the interval are they?
- Do the abnormal results form a pattern, or is one value isolated?
- Could hydration, stress, medication or sample quality affect the finding?
- Should we add a urinalysis, T4, SDMA, infectious-disease test, blood-pressure check or imaging?
- Should the test be repeated, and on what timetable?
- What symptoms or changes at home should prompt an earlier call?
Keep a copy of each report. A chronological record allows the veterinarian to distinguish a one-time fluctuation from a persistent trend and helps prevent duplicate testing.
The practical takeaway
For most broad evaluations, CBC plus serum chemistry provides the basic blood information, while urinalysis adds essential urinary and kidney context. T4, renal indices and FeLV/FIV testing are targeted additions, not automatic requirements. Expect a general U.S. price guide of $100–$200 for routine CBC and biochemistry in 2025, then obtain a clinic-specific, itemized estimate. Most importantly, treat every result as evidence to interpret with the examination and history—not as a diagnosis printed beside a high or low flag.
