During your visit, inspect housing, cleaning, ventilation, enrichment, staffing, health records, isolation, veterinary access and emergency procedures. Ask staff to demonstrate routines and explain what they record. A polished reception area is not evidence that cats are checked regularly or that illness is managed correctly.
The standards cited here come mainly from guidance in England and the code used in Victoria, Australia. They are useful benchmarks, not universal law. Check your local licensing rules and ask your cat’s veterinarian which vaccinations, preventive care and boarding precautions fit your cat’s age, health and lifestyle.

How to inspect a cat boarding facility
Arrange a tour while the facility is operating, rather than relying only on photographs. Notice smells, noise, temperature, staff behavior and whether cats have places to retreat. Ask to see a typical unit, the isolation area, food and medication records (with other owners’ information concealed), and the written emergency plan. A staff member should answer specific questions without becoming defensive or substituting marketing language for a procedure.

Use the same criteria at every facility so you can compare like with like. Confirm what is included in the quoted fee—feeding, medication, play or one-to-one time, grooming, transport and veterinary coordination—before comparing prices. There is no reliable current price survey supporting a single “typical” boarding price, so a low quote is meaningful only when the services and safeguards are equivalent.

The 11 signs of a well-run cat boarding facility
1. Clean, dry and maintained spaces
Look at litter areas, floors, walls, bedding, bowls and equipment rather than only the lobby. Surfaces should be washable and free of accumulated waste, standing water, damaged wire or sharp edges. Ask to see the daily cleaning schedule and how staff clean bedding, bowls and toys between cats. They should be able to explain which products are used, how they are diluted and how cats are kept away until surfaces are safe.
England’s licensing guidance says occupied units should be cleaned at least daily and disinfected between occupants and whenever necessary. Victoria’s code also calls for daily cleaning and regular disinfection. Those are jurisdiction-specific standards; your local rule may differ. A facility that cannot show a routine, a checklist or responsibility for signing it off has no verifiable process.
2. Controlled ventilation, temperature and noise
Spend several minutes listening. Continuous barking, loud machinery, slamming doors or a strong odor can keep a cat in a chronic stress response. Ask how the facility controls temperature and humidity, what happens during a heat wave or cold snap, and how it limits drafts. England’s guidance says cats must not be exposed to excessive or continuous noise or draughts and should be monitored for intolerance to heat or cold.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsObserve whether air feels stale or excessively humid and whether units are positioned away from noisy dog areas, laundry rooms or public traffic. Staff should know the normal temperature range used for their rooms and have a plan for moving cats if climate control fails.
3. Secure, suitable individual accommodation
Inspect doors, latches, hinges, mesh and gaps at floor level. A cat should not be able to push through a loose latch, catch a limb on broken hardware or reach a toxic cleaning product. Ask whether cats from different households ever share a unit. Under the cited England guidance, they must not. Cats from the same household may share only with written owner consent and ongoing monitoring.

Ask how staff verify the identity of each cat at intake and during transfers. Double-door entry systems, secure carriers and a rule that doors are closed before another is opened reduce escape risk. If staff answer that cats are “friendly enough” to mix without a formal consent and monitoring process, treat that as a serious warning.
4. Space and choice inside each unit
A suitable unit lets a cat stand, turn, stretch, rest, climb where appropriate and reach food, water and litter without being forced into contact with another cat or a person. Ask staff to show the hiding place, resting surface and any elevated option, not just describe them. Check that shelves are stable, washable and positioned so a cat cannot fall onto a sharp edge.

Exact minimum dimensions depend on local law and the type of accommodation. The practical test is whether the cat has meaningful choices: a place to withdraw, a comfortable resting area and enough separation between resources to avoid conflict. A large enclosure without a hide can be less suitable than a smaller, thoughtfully arranged unit.
5. Enrichment that is used and maintained
Look for scratching options, safe toys, hiding places and opportunities for controlled interaction. Ask how staff tailor enrichment to an individual cat: some seek play, while others prefer quiet observation or brief contact. England’s guidance calls for a documented enrichment program and daily safety checks of enrichment items. Toys should be removed if they fray, shed parts or present a swallowing or entanglement hazard.
Staff should understand feline communication rather than insisting every cat be handled. The Australian Veterinary Association says boarding staff should recognize signals that an animal needs more space, signs of anxiety and signs that one animal may threaten another. Ask what a staff member does when a cat flattens its ears, hides persistently, hisses, freezes or swats. “We give every cat a cuddle” is not an adequate behavior plan.

6. Competent staffing and predictable checks
Ask how many cats each person is responsible for on the busiest day, what training new employees receive and who supervises them. Find out whether checks are written, electronic or both, and whether a manager reviews missed entries. England’s guidance uses a benchmark of no more than 25 cats per staff member and visits at intervals of no more than three hours between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.; cats with particular needs may require more frequent checks. Present those figures as England-specific guidance, not a universal staffing law.
Request a sample of a completed check record with personal information removed. It should show more than a tick mark: appetite or food eaten, water, litter use, behavior and any action taken. A facility unable to explain who covers breaks, overnight periods and weekends may not provide the continuity your cat needs.
7. Daily observation and a response to distress
Ask exactly how staff recognize a problem and who has authority to act. Records should capture appetite, drinking, urination and defecation, vomiting, breathing, mobility, grooming, hiding and changes in social behavior. Staff should distinguish a cat that is quietly resting from one that is withdrawn, painful or frightened; a silent cat is not automatically a content cat.
Ask what triggers a veterinary call, what first aid staff are trained to provide and how quickly an owner is contacted. England’s guidance calls for daily behavior monitoring and recording changes, with veterinary advice sought for concerning behavior. A clear escalation chain—caregiver, supervisor, veterinarian and owner—prevents a minor observation from being lost between shifts.
8. A credible isolation and infection-control process
Ask to see where a sick or potentially infectious cat would be housed. The space should be separate and self-contained, with a defined route that does not pass through healthy cats. England’s guidance calls for dedicated isolation equipment and protective clothing; Victoria’s code also requires isolation facilities at the establishment or at veterinary premises.

Ask how staff sequence work, dispose of waste, change gloves or clothing and disinfect carriers after an illness. Find out whether food bowls, litter trays and cleaning tools are dedicated to isolation. “We clean more often” is not the same as preventing cross-contamination. The facility should also explain how it handles a cat that arrives with coughing, diarrhea, parasites or an unknown health history.
9. Health screening and access to a veterinarian
Confirm which vaccination documents are required and how far in advance they must be supplied. England’s guidance refers to current vaccination records covering feline panleukopenia and respiratory viruses. Victoria’s code specifies feline infectious enteritis and respiratory disease and requires a current certificate. Requirements vary by location, and your veterinarian should determine the right plan for your cat rather than applying a one-size-fits-all rule.
Ask whether the facility has a veterinarian available for advice, which clinic receives emergencies, how transport is arranged and who can authorize treatment if you cannot be reached. Veterinary organizations describe boarding as a higher-exposure context in which vaccination decisions should reflect a cat’s lifestyle and individual risks. Provide an accurate medical history, including chronic disease, allergies, previous stress reactions and recent treatments.
10. Complete records, diet and medication handling
At intake, the facility should record your contact details, an emergency contact, your veterinarian, diet, feeding times, litter preferences, medical and behavioral history, medications and consent for veterinary treatment. Ask how those instructions follow the cat between shifts and what happens if a label or instruction is unclear.
Watch staff demonstrate medication storage and administration. England’s guidance says prescribed medicines should be securely stored and used as directed by the veterinarian. Medication should remain in its original labeled container when possible, with doses and times logged. Ask how missed doses, vomiting after medication or refusal to eat are recorded and escalated. Written feeding instructions should include amounts and permitted treats, not just “feed normally.”

11. A practiced emergency and security plan
Ask staff to walk you through a fire, power outage, ventilation failure, flood, severe weather event and escaped-cat scenario. England’s guidance calls for a written emergency plan, evacuation arrangements, working smoke detection on each floor and a nearby key holder available during emergencies. Verify that alarms and emergency lighting are maintained, not merely installed.
Ask where cats go during an evacuation, how carriers are labeled, how staff account for every animal and how owners are notified after hours. Find out what backup exists for heating, cooling, water and electronic records. A credible facility can describe its last drill or review and identify who makes decisions when the manager is absent. Check the plan against your local fire, animal-welfare and boarding regulations.

Warning signs that should stop the booking
- Staff refuse a tour of ordinary operating areas or will not explain basic routines.
- Units contain waste, damaged fittings, wet bedding, strong ammonia odor or unsafe loose objects.
- There is no defined isolation space or no answer about preventing cross-contamination.
- Records are informal, incomplete or unavailable to the staff actually caring for cats.
- Employees cannot describe what they do when a cat will not eat, appears painful or escapes.
- The facility dismisses hiding, hissing or withdrawal as “just a quiet personality” without monitoring.
- Vaccination, consent and emergency-contact requirements are unclear or applied inconsistently.
Prepare your cat for a safer stay
Give the facility a concise written care sheet that matches the records you reviewed. Include feeding amounts and times, medication instructions, litter habits, preferred hiding or handling approach, triggers, medical history, your veterinarian’s details and two reachable contacts. Supply current vaccination documentation and discuss any exceptions with your veterinarian before arrival.
Transport your cat in a suitable, strong carrier. Label it with your name and phone number, secure the door, and bring familiar bedding only if the facility allows it and the item can be cleaned safely. Ask how arrival and departure are staged so your cat is not left in a public waiting area or exposed to unfamiliar animals.
After booking, keep the facility’s phone number, emergency procedure and veterinarian details accessible. If the manager cannot answer a practical question before payment, choose a provider whose routines you can verify.
